- A Million People Hate Him for Wanting to Leave
- Chapter 31, part 2 - Worker Song Yunhui is online!
His job was to help the person in charge of the set move things around.
The work was very simple, and it didn’t require a lot of brainpower. It was just tiring.
Song Yunhui didn’t grow up pampered. Objectively speaking, his endurance was much better than average.
While spending so many years on different sets, he wouldn’t just sit in the lounge whenever he had a break. He often went around the set to understand and learn every facet of the work.
That’s why he was surprisingly quick to get started.
One group had already set up their backdrop and started shooting. They were responsible for the second group’s backdrop.
At first, everyone was doing their own thing, but eventually they started asking him to move things over.
The person from before, who was originally directing everyone, noticed that Song Yunhui was silently moving things over, so he figured he’d just fine-tune later. He turned off his megaphone and joined in on moving things.
The two of them ended up carrying broken flower pots for the scene’s background side by side. The man glanced at the person next to him and was quite surprised. “Little Brother, you’ve done this before.”
When Yang He introduced this person, she said that he had no work experience in this field, but that he was young and willing to work hard.
They were also in urgent need of people here, so anyone introduced by a crew member was immediately recruited.
He just didn’t expect the other party to be surprisingly skilled.
This was good. They didn’t have to take care of any newbies while working, which saves a lot of effort.
Song Yunhui didn’t say much, just nodding. “That’s right.”
Just a bit, not much.
The person next to him looked at him again.
He sounds quite nice.
The man moved away from his thoughts and asked, “Are you Yang He’s boyfriend?”
Everyone in the crew knew that the screenwriter, Yang He, had a boyfriend before, and now she suddenly introduced someone to the crew. It was quite suspicious now that he thought about it.
Song Yunhui replied, “No, I don’t have a girlfriend.”
His words weren’t very formal, but the man could feel that he meant it.
Guessed wrong.
The man apologized, then changed the subject while they continued working.
This time, their task was completed faster than expected. After finishing the work, the two discovered that it was done much earlier than expected. They only needed to apply some finishing touches. Once they did, at this moment where everyone was extremely busy, they’d surprisingly have some free time.
When Ma Gang, who’d been busy for half a morning because the equipment count wasn’t matching, came back, the person that he left in the room was gone.
When he saw Song Yunhui again, he was holding a lot of equipment and slowly placing it on the ground.
【 Just give him a random position, don’t tire him out 】
Yang He’s previous message was still spinning in his mind.
Ma Gang: “…”
By the time he arrived, the work that the other party got from who knows where was already done.
Ma Gang: “…”
Ma Gang slowly stopped moving forward.
After the work was completed, the set designer didn’t want to continue working. He was so tired that he was sweating, so he immediately ran to a free spot to rest.
Song Yunhui briefly pulled the scarf off his face to take a deep breath. Instead of sitting down like the other people, he walked around slowly and watched other people work from the sidelines.
He originally wanted to go out for a walk while looking around, but it wasn’t lunch break yet. Unless something important happened, he couldn’t leave the crew’s base at will.
He had no intention of breaking the rules.
Today, he moved things around for too long, so his feet were already a little sore. The man sitting in a corner waved to him, trying to get him to go over and rest with him.
He shook his head and refused.
He continued walking around the base.
Everyone was busy doing their own thing. Some were taking a break, still panting and sweating like rain.
It was truly a microcosm, just like a tiny world.
At noon, the lunch boxes for the crew were distributed.
Song Yunhui accepted the boxed lunch gratefully. The taste didn’t matter, he still ate at least half.
The other half of the food was soaked in oil, so it was hard to pick up with chopsticks.
Yang He came to see him during lunch break and asked him how he felt.
He said it was okay.
While talking to her, he moved his eyes slightly to the side and saw the director, who seemed to be casually looking towards them.
Last night, the two parties had agreed to do their own thing and try not to contact each other as much as possible. It seemed like they were too overwhelmed this morning.
After emphasizing again that he must tell her immediately if something went wrong, Yang He looked around and finally had no choice but to leave.
The director also looked away.
——
After Yang He left, Song Yunhui briefly familiarized himself with the place during lunch time.
Not too developed, but not too backwards either, with all sorts of people moving through the crowd.
Sitting in a corner of a quiet street, he could watch the crowd of people on the street opposite.
If he could, Song Yunhui would be willing to sit here and watch them all afternoon.
Before lunch break was over, he went back to the base.
On the way back, he happened to see another crew member transporting something.
The gate to the other base was temporarily opened.
…It’s just, their place was pretty big.
It was a stark contrast to their own base.
No wonder he had gotten a reminder from Yang He to not look over to the neighboring crew if he ever passed by.
The afternoon was still full of work, but the tasks became much easier. The other groups had heavier tasks, so they were much busier.
The crew was so busy in the evening that they didn’t have time to eat dinner. In the end, the schedule was postponed, and their crew got off work earlier.
Song Yunhui didn’t leave immediately.
Song Yunhui went to the place where his things were stored and took out a new mask. He put it on, lowered his hat, and walked around the set.
It was already evening, and the sky was completely dark. But one spot in the base was particularly bright, with all kinds of lights on. It looked quite busy.
He saw what he assumed to be the current group’s shooting location.
Filming was still going on there. Some people were standing under the lights. Others were sitting aside while reading their script or drinking water, and others were still having their makeup applied by the makeup crew.
The most common thing on a crew continued to be the panel lighting.
The person in the center of Song Yunhui’s line of sight was surprisingly young. He seemed to be in his early twenties, maybe even younger. His face still looked immature, but he had to act out the numbness and pain of struggling in society.
It was easy to tell that he had talent and worked hard, and that was all true.
But his performance lacked some flavor.
Song Yunhui could see it, and so could the director. After they were done recording, he looked at the video again and again, and then shook his head.
That meant it wouldn’t work.
Even with makeup on his face, it was still clear to see that the young actor’s face turned paler.
The director poked his head out from behind the camera and said, “Can we do it again?”
The actor nodded.
It was completely winter by now, and everyone else was wearing cotton sweaters and down jackets. Only he was wearing a thin, shabby piece of clothing.
Song Yunhui could see that his movements were a little stiff.
The lights and cameras were put back in place, and the scene was shot again from start to finish.
The result still didn’t pass.
The atmosphere was gloomy. Neither the cameraman nor the lighting designer spoke. They re-adjusted things in silence. The actor stood there, and someone who was probably his assistant came forward and put a coat on him.
The director was still looking at the camera feed.
Song Yunhui couldn’t see his face, but judging from other people’s expressions, things weren’t looking too good.
The director called the actor down to talk about the scene. Yang He, who was standing aside and watching, originally looked over at the two of them. But then, she seemed to notice something and turned around just in time to see Song Yunhui standing some distance away.
Song Yunhui turned around and left.
When they got off work, so did the crew next door. And so, two lines of people filed out together mightily, looking particularly conspicuous in the night.
Song Yunhui avoided them. He originally wanted to walk around, but then he remembered that Qin Shu had called him at noon today to remind him to eat. Feeling inexplicably guilty, he finally turned on his feet and walked into a food stall.
The streets were deserted at night, but there were many people around the food stalls. The scene was very lively.
He didn’t have a good appetite tonight, so he only ordered a portion of fried rice and then sat in a corner of the store.
This portion of fried rice was a significant expense for his paycheck today.
After ordering, he didn’t look at his phone. Instead, he sat casually and upright, watching the various customers in the food stall. Eventually, he lowered his eyes.
There was some progress today, but not much.
He felt like he was still missing something.
But what exactly was missing, he couldn’t say.
He sat in his seat and kept thinking about it, but then, something occupied his peripheral vision.
He looked up and saw a boy standing next to his table, looking a little cautious. He asked, “Can we share a table?”
People enter the store very quickly, but they leave very slowly. Most people chat while eating, and then go on to have a drink while chatting.
His table was the only one with an empty seat.
Song Yunhui nodded.
The boy smiled shyly and sat down opposite him, obviously not used to the atmosphere here.
This was the actor he saw on set just now.
He smiled shyly, seeming a bit embarrassed. He stopped talking after sitting down, but his eyes were getting redder and redder.
Song Yunhui, who was sitting opposite: “…”
He’s sitting right across. There’s no way to pretend he doesn’t see it.
In the spirit of humanitarianism, he asked, “Did something happen?”
As soon as he said the words, seeing the other person’s reaction, he instantly realized that he shouldn’t have asked.
Now, the boy opposite had not only red eyes, but also a slightly red nose.
Song Yunhui looked away, originally hoping that he would calm down on his own, but the other party was quiet for a while before starting to talk slowly.
He said that he was still in college when he was recruited to make a movie. It’d been going well before, but today the scene was NG’d more than a dozen times. In the end, the director simply let him go out for a meal, but he had to go back to continue filming afterwards.
His family background wasn’t bad, but he had to play a person from the lowest level of society. Although he had worked hard, he still couldn’t meet the director’s requirements.
He still hadn’t figured out how to face the director when he went back.
It was indeed a bit difficult for a person who wasn’t an extrovert to act in a movie. However, if they were someone with talent, it didn’t matter what their original personality was like. They could perfectly integrate into their role.
Encountering a setback for the first time and not knowing how to solve it always has great impact on people this young. Apart from being at a loss, they can’t think of any solutions.
“Perhaps you can’t get into the role because you haven’t shifted your perspective to keep up with the role.”
Unexpectedly, he received an answer other than “That’s too bad.” The boy looked up in confusion.
The person opposite said, as if in casual conversation, that if he looked at the character’s situation from his perspective, it was a tragic situation that he couldn’t imagine, and that made him instinctively interpret the scene as despair. However, looking at it from the character’s perspective, he’d always been at the bottom of society. He had never seen the glamor of the upper class, and the same was true of everyone around him. He lived a hard and numb life, but it wasn’t pure despair.
“All he feels is that this is how his life should be.”
There was a clear and steady voice entering his ears. The boy raised his head, and the first thing he saw was the other person’s gentle eyes.
He seemed to be looking at the young boy.
But at the same time, it seemed like nothing could get into his eyes.
It was a truly beautiful pair of eyes. Just looking at them could make people relax easily.
“No. 508, a portion of fried rice! It’s ready!”
Packing a portion of fried rice wasn’t complicated. The voice of the front desk came from the lobby. Song Yunhui looked down at the number in his hand, then stood up and prepared to leave with neat and clean movements.
