hello, i'm Cups! i'll be going along on Nan Du's journey with you guys. it's my first full translation, so if you catch any mistakes, please do let me know in the comments. updates release every monday, wednesday, friday and sunday!
When Nan Du arrived, Lu Xingye, who was sitting in the booth scolding Qu Xiao, was like a puppy that heard the sound of a bell. Suddenly, he fell down like he’d lost his bones, but his eyes were bright as they stared straight at the approaching Nan Du.
“Gege.”
As soon as he walked in, Lu Xingye reached out to grab Nan Du’s sleeve, and put his other hand on his stomach. His eyebrows wrinkled, looking uncomfortable. “Are you angry?”
Nan Du didn’t even care. He handed Lu Xingye over to the medical robot and swiped his card, and then crossed over to the bar, gently tapping his finger. “A glass of Tequila Sunrise.”
Tonight, the bartender had something to do at home and asked for leave, so the boss personally came over to cover his shift. When he turned around, he saw a long-haired beauty who could be a model sitting in front of him.
Because he was preparing to leave, Nan Du changed out of his original light sweater and into a black leather jacket and tight trousers, making the lines of his body look particularly hot and eye-catching.
Who doesn’t love beauties? Nevermind the fact that the boss himself was gay. The boss added some fancy flavors to the simple drink, but just as he delivered it to the beauty, Lu Xingye’s test results were transmitted to Nan Du’s terminal.
Stress-induced gastritis.
Of course, Lu Xingye didn’t actually have it, but it was easier to manipulate the medical robot’s system when it came to milder illnesses, and stomach problems were easier to fake than others.
Nan Du glanced at it and then looked away. He had no intention of going to Lu Xingye immediately. Instead, he accepted the drink from the boss.
The boss didn’t know the relationship between the two. He held up the glass with one hand, leaning forward with a smile. “Are you alone?”
The second before Nan Du’s fingers reached the glass, a drunk man staggered to them. The Tequila Sunrise that had been handed out was thrown into the air as it met with the man’s elbow with a thud, spilling all over the boss.
“You…” The boss was about to swear, but his eyes touched Nan Du in front of him and his voice immediately weakened.
However, the “drunk man” didn’t seem to have this level of common sense. Not only did he hit the drink, one of his hands also reached out towards Nan Du.
Nan Du narrowed his eyes slightly. Before the man put his hand on him, one of his hands had already been raised.
The boss thought that this “drunk man” deserved a slap in the face, but it didn’t matter. As long as he dared to take action, he would stop the beauty from suffering and become the hero who saved the beauty in his store. Then, things will practically be a done deal.
But just as Nan Du’s hand was about to touch the man’s face, it traveled downwards and lifted Lu Xingye’s chin. “You spilled the drink I was about to drink.”
“I was wrong.” Lu Xingye put his hands around Nan Du’s waist without any hesitation. He apologized quickly, but his tone was aggrieved. “Obviously, Gege is supposed to be here to see me.”
“Do all the people who come into this bar come here to see you? Can’t I just think that the drinks here taste good?”
“They don’t taste good.” Lu Xingye frowned in confusion, “Very bitter.”
“People only drink when they’re unhappy. Don’t drink anymore.” Lu Xingye said, grabbing Nan Du’s hand and forcefully inserting himself between Nan Du and the bar to isolate the boss from Nan Du’s sight. “But I’ll do it too, if Gege likes it.”
Lu Xingye’s tone was that of a harmless little lover who was drunk and acting coquettishly. Only the boss himself knew that when the man suddenly turned his head and glanced at him from an angle that Nan Du couldn’t see, he looked sober and indifferent, as if the boss was no more than a pile of mechanical waste that was about to be taken to the garbage disposal site.
The boss saw him twice later.
Not long after, Lu Xingye came to him and asked him to teach him how to mix drinks.
However, Lu Xingye’s talent was so outstanding that the boss only needed to demonstrate it once for the man to master dozens of other tricks without any guidance. He was simply not like a normal human being.
The next time was three months later. After business on the island went downhill, the owner reopened his bar back on the mainland. Then, one night, Lu Xingye came over with Nan Du in his arms, and they both wore a ring on their ring fingers.
Lu Xingye mixed a drink with a smile and said that day was their 100-day anniversary, so it was called a Hundred Days Rose.
The drink had a very rich taste and a charming color. Most importantly, it seemed to have a magical power. Everyone who drank it seemed to hear their own heartbeat in an instant.
Then, everything would fall silent. The noisy bar would fade away, the lights would become blurry, and it seemed that there was only room for one person in your sight.
Thanks to the gimmick of the Hundred Days Rose that night, the owner’s bar, which was about to close down, came back to life overnight. Many people came here to ask for a glass of it, but Lu Xingye never came again.
However, three months later, the boss met Nan Du again.
He came alone, with his long hair pulled up while wearing a long white windbreaker. The boss had never taught Nan Du how to bartend, but that night, the people in the bar once again tasted the Hundred Days Rose that they could only dream of before.
So later, there was a saying in this bar that the Hundred Days Rose was actually available for a limited time and would be on the shelves every one hundred days.
The boss thought to himself that this was nonsense. It was just a fun way for a young couple to celebrate their anniversary. They were busy falling in love, so how could they have time to come over every time?
Especially Lu Xingye, who stared at Nan Du like a hungry wolf. How could he keep bringing Nan Du here time and time again and arousing people’s covetous eyes when he looked like he was ready to pull out people’s eyeballs as soon as they looked at Nan Du more than once?
But the boss’s explanation didn’t work at all. After 100 days, so many people came that they almost filled the whole bar. And then… he saw Nan Du at the door again.
Except that behind him, there was no sign of the other man.
The boss guessed that they might have broken up. After all, in this era, fast food love was completely normal. Since the beauty was alone, and he didn’t seem nostalgic for his old love… Although the boss was scared to death by Lu Xingye, he still went up to Nan Du and asked about it.
“Break up?” Nan Du said with a smile, “We didn’t break up.”
The bar spoon had a flower neatly wrapped around it, exactly like Lu Xingye had done while showing off his skills in the last bar. Someone seemed to want to get in front of Nan Du, but he raised his eyes and looked up.
His eyes were cold and distant, with a bit of inorganic scrutiny. For a moment, the boss actually saw the shadow of Lu Xingye in him.
The wine in the measuring cup was poured back into the glass, revealing a thin and white wrist. The boss then discovered that Nan Du had a ring on his ring finger. “We’re married.”
His words were calm, as if he had already said this over and over again. Then, he turned his eyes and looked at the white roses on the bar. “Boss, can you give me one of those flowers?”
“No.” Nan Du declined the bouquet the boss handed over. “Just one flower will do.”
He bent his eyes. “I’m going to see someone.”
Within a few days, the boss saw the news of the explosion in the P&C building on TV. Glass fragments fell from the sky, almost resembling the white rose from that night.
~
“Gege…” Lu Xingye put one hand around Nan Du’s waist and rested his chin on his shoulder. “Don’t be angry, okay?”
“I’ll be sad when you ignore me.” Lu Xingye said, “I’ll listen to you from now on.”
“Come home with me, okay?”
“Lu Xingye!”
The medical robot handed over the medicine. Nan Du stretched out his hand to pull him up, but found that Lu Xingye was sticking to Nan Du like a plaster. His eyes were tightly closed, as if he had completely fallen asleep, but his hands were holding on so tight that he couldn’t be shaken away.
Nan Du couldn’t wake him up after calling twice, so he could only lift the person up like a large sandbag and walk to Qu Xiao. “Where’s his coat?”
Qu Xiao immediately handed over the coat and wallet on the table like a qualified lieutenant. It took a long time for him to come back to his senses. When it comes to Lu Xingye’s stuff… What was Nan Du asking an enthusiastic passerby like him for?
When Qu Xiao looked up, he happened to see Nan Du driving Lu Xingye away with indifferent eyes, his right hand lazily resting on the steering wheel as he stepped on the accelerator. The speed of the car soared to 180. There was no trace of the gentle and elegant look that Lu Xingye usually described.
Nan Du never took care of anyone, so Lu Xingye was thrown to the bed in a very rough way. Perhaps the movement was too large, so he opened his eyes again in a daze.
“Gege…” The intertwined fingers moved. Only when he reached his own territory did he dare to act coquettishly, rubbing his cheek against Nan Du’s arm. “I feel so uncomfortable.”
“Take medicine if you feel uncomfortable.”
“I’m sick…” Lu Xingye said, “But you don’t even try to comfort me.”
“How do you want to be comforted?”
Lu Xingye took Nan Du’s hand and pulled him to the bed. “Come up and stay with me.”
Nan Du smiled and looked Lu Xingye up and down, his eyes lingering on his pale face and his lower body wrapped in the quilt. “Are you sure you want to do it right now?”
But when he actually got into bed, he realized that Lu Xingye didn’t seem to have any intention of taking off his clothes. His hand restrainedly stopped on Nan Du’s back, pressing the whole person into his arms. “I’ll be fine when we wake up.” Lu Xingye kissed his forehead. “Go to sleep, Gege.”
Lu Xingye’s chest was broad and warm. Nan Du didn’t feel sleepy at first, but maybe because he and Lu Xingye had forcibly adjusted their schedules during this period on the island, his consciousness really did gradually fade away. It felt like he was back to when he was a child, with him and 60 lying side by side on a hard plank bed, looking like the only two bananas left on the bunch.
“Did you know that you look a lot like…”
“What?” Before Lu Xingye could hear clearly, Nan Du had already fallen asleep.
Lu Xingye’s originally blurred eyes finally opened completely. He stared at Nan Du without blinking, and tightened the hand on his back.
This lasted until Nan Du’s body began to tremble unconsciously again. Lu Xingye skillfully held the person in his arms and patted Nan Du’s back time and time again. “It’s okay, Gege, I’m here. It’s okay, I’m here.”
He must not leave me, Lu Xingye thought. He usually can’t sleep well. What will he do when he’s alone?
With this in mind, Lu Xingye pushed aside Nan Du’s long hair, revealing a little of his slender white neck, and then lowered his head to kiss there.
Nan Du seemed to feel a sting in his sleep and frowned slightly, but soon, because of the gentle comfort, he fell back into his sleep.
~
“So…the tracker was planted at that time?”
Nan Du’s index finger was hooked on the gun, and the dark muzzle pointed at Lu Xingye’s heart. “Pretty good, Xiao Ye. Why didn’t I realize you were so capable before?”
“You still pretended to be innocent when you knew about it early on.” Nan Du sneered. “What’s the matter, think I’m getting old and gullible?”
Because Lu Xingye’s mental health seemed obviously worrying when he first returned to this planet, Nan Du reluctantly accommodated him for a few days.
Unexpectedly, within just a few days, this person started to get a bit too cheeky.
For example, on the grounds of protecting Nan Du’s safety, Nan Du was not allowed to meet with a customer who had expressed a favorable impression of him. The customer’s car was clearly about to reach the place they agreed to meet, but suddenly, his driverless car turned into a street corner and crashed. The person and the car both had to be towed away by the insurance company.
Another example was that he secretly made a rule that Nan Du had to go home before 9 PM. Nan Du thought it was funny and didn’t take it seriously at all. As a result, when he was having a conversation with Shen Si, Shen Ning and the others just after ten, the fire alarm in the house suddenly went off.
Lu Xingye appeared with several firefighters, made space to squeeze in between them, and put one hand around Nan Du’s waist. “We happened to be near here on a mission. What a coincidence, Gege. Shall we go home together?”
The place where Nan Du was having this conversation was the contact point for their gang. It was deep into an alley, and there were no cameras nearby. It was impossible for ordinary people to find it even if they got lost while shopping. Thinking of this, Nan Du would have to be possessed to believe him.
Shen Ning immediately gave everyone in the gang a full-body checkup. He found a bionic tracking chip in Nan Du’s neck, and it was put there three years ago.
Sure enough, as soon as Nan Du entered a bar the next night, Lu Xingye immediately followed him in, saying he was there to check on a suspect. The bar had been open for four or five years, but the most suspicious person was definitely Lu Xingye.
“Using the military’s technology just for me.” Nan Du’s gun slid across Lu Xingye’s chest. “Should I still praise you for your intelligence?”
Lu Xingye’s hands were hung up and tied to the head of the bed behind him. He moved his wrists, deliberately trying to coax Nan Du. “Gege.”
“If you dare to remove it, you’ll be handcuffed for the rest of the month.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Lu Xingye immediately calmed down.
“Gege…” Unable to make any physical movements, Lu Xingye could only comfort him verbally. “I wasn’t sensible at that time. I thought… I thought you…”
Lu Xingye thought Nan Du didn’t like him that much.
Indeed, there were actually many clues that pointed to that.
For example, Nan Du was only with him because of his mission. For example, Nan Du was not as passionate and intimate with Lu Xingye as Lu Xingye was with him. One more example, Nan Du had never actively tried to establish a stable and long-term relationship with him.
Of course, Lu Xingye did not do it effectively either. So in the end, Nan Du left St. Elipe Island.
That day, Lu Xingye watched as the person who usually played with flowers in front of him lifted his leg, pulled two guns from his waist and blew out a tire with one shot, forcing his pursuers to retreat. Then, without looking at Lu Xingye, he pulled open the car door and took off.
“Gege!”
Lu Xingye almost allocated the entire team just to stop him. Their car was forced to a stop at the port, and the car window was lowered, revealing Nan Du’s beautiful face. “Executive Officer, don’t be so angry.” He blew out a puff of smoke, almost like sending a kiss. “People call partners who go to bed together the second time they meet…”
“Friends with benefits.”
Nan Du smiled softly and leaned out of the car door as if asking for a kiss. Lu Xingye stretched out his hand to grab him, but it was in vain.
His fingertips ran through Nan Du’s long hair, and the person in front of him just disappeared in a second, leaving only a communication device that had run out of power.
~
Nan Du thought that he and Lu Xingye would never meet again, so in order for him to receive less punishment for his affair, he didn’t save him any face in front of his subordinates.
But he didn’t expect that he would see Lu Xingye again at Meng Zangdong’s dinner a few days later.
Meng Zangdong had a problem. He was homophobic.
All male guests who arrived could not be alone or bring people of the same sex with them, so compared to Shen Si, who had a tougher appearance and taller figure, Nan Du had no choice but to make the sacrifice.
In order to suit the aesthetics of the elderly, Shen Ning even forced him to change into a cheongsam.
Not long after they arrived, the door opened again, and everyone looked back to see the retired General Lu striding in with his son, who hadn’t been seen in years since he practically grew up in the army.
With their status, let alone not bringing a female companion, even if the two of them didn’t say a word during the entire night, there would still be people willing to please them.
It’s a shame that the general’s son was unbearably lonely. As soon as he walked in, he took a glass of champagne from the waiter and walked towards the long-haired beauty in the corner. He leaned over and said, “Sister, can I Invite you to a dance?”
Everyone looked over. The beauty was tall, with her long hair tied up in a bun, and her slim waist wasn’t too thin. The cheongsam was slit to the thigh, but the curves above were plumper.
Nan Du didn’t want to attract attention at all, but Lu Xingye’s hands were tight around his waist, staring at him like a ferocious wolf that had been hungry for many days. Amid the curious gazes, Nan Du blew a gentle breath on his ear and said with a smile, “Executive Officer, if you want to see me, you can wait until the show’s over.”
He deliberately made the relationship between the two sound ambiguous and frivolous. Lu Xingye really let out a low laugh, but instead of being pissed off enough to let go like Nan Du thought he would, he clasped Nan Du’s wrists and pulled him closer. “Gege, I looked up what friends with benefits means.”
Nan Du’s heart skipped a beat. Thinking that this was an attempt to settle accounts, when he felt something in Lu Xingye’s waist hit him, he assumed it was a gun. Nan Du’s arms wrapped onto his shoulders.
The song’s beat accelerated, and the two of them kept moving according to the pace. Lu Xingye’s fingers reached into his pocket. Nan Du was stunned and reached out to touch his fingertips, but made no next move.
Lu Xingye separated their fingers for a second, but soon he pulled them together again. Lu Xingye inserted a flower into Nan Du’s collar, just like when they first met.
“A black rose, I found it.”
As the song came to an end and the lights dimmed, Lu Xingye pressed him against the marble pillar behind him and bit Nan Du’s lips. “I can let you take the information away.”
“But Gege, can you be my boyfriend?”
~
“I don’t love you? Then I would have shot you before you touched the flower.” The gun slid along his chest, and Nan du raised his eyes. “You knew already, didn’t you?”
“Tell me. How could Major Lu, who never comes to such banquets, suddenly appear on such a specific occasion? I had clearly disguised myself at that time. How did you manage to find me through the crowd without even looking?”
Later on, it became increasingly clear. The places where missions were carried out were all well-guarded bases, but Lu Xingye always managed to arrive at just the right time, and… On that last day, Nan Du went to the Intelligence Building almost immediately after he broke up with him, but Lu Xingye still followed him.
Just thinking about it made Nan Du feel bad. The muzzle of the gun ground around Lu Xingye’s lower body while Nan Du raised his chin and looked at him coldly.
He bent his knees and pressed them against Lu Xingye’s abdominal muscles. Lu Xingye puffed up his chest impatiently and said in a hoarse voice, “Gege.”
“Why didn’t you remember to call me Gege when you hit someone’s car into a street corner?”
Nan Du smiled, taking out the biochip that had been in him and throwing it on his chest. He started a fire, but then he planned to get up and leave.
Lu Xingye’s legs clamped around his waist. “What are you doing?”
“Going out. Something happened.”
Nan Du’s words were short and concise, but as he turned around, he found that Lu Xingye’s eyes were red.
The skin on his wrist was bleeding due to his struggle, and his eyelashes were drooped. Although Nan Du knew that this little wound wouldn’t hurt at all, he couldn’t help but soften. “Why are you crying?”
This question was a sign of pardon. Nan Du didn’t even realize when the man moved his hands, but the handcuffs opened with a click. Before Nan Du could get angry, Lu Xingye grabbed Nan Du’s waist and held him, rubbing him into his arms. “Gege…” He said in a low voice, “When you left me last time, you also threw something away and left without looking back.”
The curse words in Nan Du’s throat were suddenly stuck.
Looking at his attitude, Lu Xingye knew that he had done enough to coax him. By now, he had developed a very standard response process when dealing with Nan Du’s anger, and he always continued to update and evolve it in real time.
In the end, regardless of the intermediate procedures, there were actually only three core steps.
After all, in Lu Xingye’s eyes, although he often made Nan Du angry, the number of times they actually fought was only three times.
The first time was because of Shen Si. Lu Xingye learned the first way to deal with a quarrel – to show weakness.
The second time… was when he saw the wounds Nan Du had made on his own body.
If he really had to say what he was feeling at that point, he was probably wishing he could beat himself up.
Lu Xingye, who hadn’t dared to say a harsh word to Nan Du for two consecutive months, became angry for the first time. However, he regretted it soon after.
Without saying a word, he picked up the medicine box and applied medicine to Nan Du, even though Nan Du himself didn’t take it seriously.
If cutting himself twice and saying a few cruel words could deter Nan Du, Lu Xingye would stab himself in the heart right now. However, he didn’t feel that his well-being was capable of threatening Nan Du, and it might even be counterproductive.
So Lu Xingye silently wrapped gauze on Nan Du’s arm, and was suddenly touched by someone at the end of his eyes.
Nan Du didn’t feel guilty when he was arguing with him, but at this moment, his voice had a rare hint of panic. “Why are you crying?”
Lu Xingye was stunned. He discovered that he could actually cry.
The lacrimal gland system seemed to have been magically opened up as Lu Xingye learned to deal with Nan Du’s other wounds.
Whenever he found unknown wounds on Nan Du’s body again, Lu Xingye would open his red eyes, lower his head and apply medicine to him little by little without making any fuss.
After a month of this, Nan Du started having fewer new injuries.
Then, came the third time.
That was also the time Lu Xingye regretted the most, because after Nan Du found out that he was an AI, he asked him something.
“So you always knew, right?”
Lu Xingye nodded.
It wasn’t until much later that he realized that there was actually a big gap between his and Nan Du’s understanding at that time.
He thought Nan Du was asking him if he knew about being an AI earlier than he did. But in fact, Nan Du’s subtext was – Since he knew about 60, why didn’t he come back to him for so many years?
He was someone who wanted to take him home at night just because he had nightmares. If Lu Xingye knew, how could he not go to him?
After they went through three reincarnations, Lu Xingye finally learned the third step. Even if Nan Du refused to communicate, he was still responsible for speaking clearly.
“Okay, I was wrong.” Lu Xingye apologized first. “I don’t feel that way anymore. I was just… insecure at that time.”
His eyes were still red. Nan Du couldn’t curse him out, so he could only let Lu Xingye say, “I know Gege, that you don’t like me like this. I’ll change it in the future.”
Lu Xingye said this, but he had no intention of correcting himself at all. If he could tolerate others approaching Nan Du, they wouldn’t have quarreled so often.
“Stop bullying me, Gege.” Lu Xingye bit Nan Du’s earlobe, not daring to go too far, just rubbing between Nan Du’s legs. “I know where you’re going.” He interlaced their fingers. “I’ll go with you.”
~
So, after three years, the original bar owner finally saw Lu Xingye step through the door again.
Lu Xingye picked up the bar spoon, and the originally silent bar immediately became lively. The Hundred Days Rose, which no one had been able to have in three years, finally saw the light of day again. The boss noticed that he had put the rose ring on his ring finger again, and curiously leaned in. “Handsome guy, where’s the one in your family?”
Lu Xingye accepted the title without hesitation. “In the car.”
When they were getting off the car, Nan Du said that he wanted to give him a surprise and asked Lu Xingye to go first. Lu Xingye had no choice but to obediently enter the bar in advance.
“So reassured?” The boss still remembered how this man acted like a wolf when they first met. “When you weren’t here before, there were a lot of people staring at him.”
Lu Xingye tightened his grip on the wine glass, but still smiled. “It doesn’t matter.”
“That’s good. You never came before. I thought you guys…”
“We will never separate.” The ice cubes fell into the wine glass with a clunk. With this sentence, Lu Xingye’s tone was inexplicably serious. “He will only like me.”
Of course Nan Du will only like him.
Because Lu Xingye was born for him.
Before meeting Nan Du, he was a blank slate. Because Nan Du liked to close himself off and hide himself, he became proactive.
Because Nan Du was hard-hearted and unwilling to admit defeat, he learned to admit weakness and show vulnerability.
When Nan Du needed company, he acted coquettishly. When Nan Du needed healing, he pretended to be cute. When Nan Du became a lofty and cool master, he would become a flirtatious and talkative little disciple.
Lu Xingye used a carving knife on himself, carving himself into the most suitable shape, and embedded himself tightly within Nan Du.
There will be no one in this world who loves Nan Du more than him, so of course they should be together forever.
No one would be allowed to disrupt them… They’ll always be together.
Lu Xingye looked at his terminal. The red dot remained in the car, and a small patch of snow-white skin was exposed on the screen.
The camera in the car that should have been turned off flashed with an inconspicuous red light, like a dormant eye in the darkness.
The little robot would always spy on his human like this.
This was Lu Xingye’s secret.
Nan Du tied the straps around his waist one by one, and pushed aside the hair that was in the way. When he put the choker on his neck, his fingers paused slightly on a piece of skin on the back of his neck.
When Lu Xingye went to kiss him, he nibbled lightly on this place.
But Nan Du’s fingertips slipped and fell from his neck to his collarbone, and a large piece of his snow-white chest was exposed to the camera lens without any scruples.
The dark straps passed through his chest and were tied down bit by bit. Nan Du unconsciously stretched out his long pair of legs, but then, he took Lu Xingye’s windbreaker and wrapped himself up.
But before getting out of the car, he turned around and glanced at the faintly flashing red light.
Because he was alone for too long when he was a child, he almost subconsciously turned Lu Xingye into the clingy and possessive person he was now. Perhaps even he himself was not aware that his desire to control Lu Xingye was actually the same as Lu Xingye’s possessiveness towards him.
But even if he realized it, Nan Du wouldn’t tell Lu Xingye about it.
This was Nan Du’s secret.
He stepped into the bar. The windbreaker wrapped around his body, showing only the black choker on his neck. Only two people knew what was hidden inside. Nan Du tapped the bar. “Is it ready?”
One last bit of Baileys was added to the drink, and Lu Xingye pushed the final result to him. He seemed to have made a new product. In it, there were dots of fine gold below, but a floating white cloud on the top, slowly flowing down like fine sand.
“What’s this?”
“Nice to meet you.”
“What?”
Lu Xingye repeated, “Nice to meet you.”
The white finally blended into the gold completely. The stars hung over the plains, and the moon surged across the wilderness.
Those were the first words they said when they met again.
Not hello, but rather, nice to meet you.
They were the perfect creations of this dystopian world.
But they’re also two monsters who were made for each other.
And they were so lucky to have three lifetimes to meet each other again.
