Chapter 20: Master and Disciple
***
In the early 21st century, China had passed through the most difficult dawn of the reform and opening-up period. After experiencing a series of epochal fireworks, China naturally entered a period of rapid development.
The entire country, like a precise and massive machine that had been wound up, began to run frantically.
The open market environment and the influx of foreign capital released unprecedented imagination for ordinary people at every level.
On a street in C City, S Province, a 10-year-old boy who had crawled out from the backyard of his home, discarded the toy in his hand and ran with all his might through the dark alley.
Ahead in the night sky, under the dim streetlights, an agile and nimble body flashed by like Superman in a movie.
After chasing into another dead end, the little boy finally lost sight of his target. He sat on the ground with a sob, as if his life had turned gray after losing the chance to talk to Superman.
“Hehe, little kid, aren’t you tired from chasing me?”
An ice cream fell from the sky, landing right on the boy’s unkempt clothes. At the same time, a mature female voice also descended from above.
“Wow! Superman sister!”
The little boy finally saw her figure and face clearly, his little face flushed with excitement: “Superman sister, can you be my master? I want to be Superman too!”
The beautiful woman was taken aback, then burst into laughter, laughing with all her charm.
“Little one, don’t you think that besides Superman, monsters can fly in the sky too?”
The beautiful woman squatted beside the little boy, her eyes squinting with laughter.
“Monsters won’t give me ice cream!”
The little boy said seriously, as if this kind of logic used to fool children was not worth mentioning to him.
The beautiful woman stood up and turned her head to look in a certain direction. It was the home of the little boy, the home of the leader of the Zhong Pharmaceutical Group, which was beginning to show its edge in S Province and even nationwide.
The beautiful woman revealed a mysterious smile, reached out to pat the little boy’s head, her expression gradually becoming calm: “Alright… from now on, you can call me master. Remember my name, I’m called Wan Yue, ‘Wan’ as in graceful, ‘Yue’ as in moon. Keep it a secret, okay!”
The little boy nodded quickly, his face full of excitement.
……
……
June 15th, Saturday.
In the office building, most companies were closed for rest, but on the 27th floor, a certain office was still wide open.
Zhong Jing was still in the habit of staying here, ordering takeout when hungry, lying flat in the small rest room next door when tired.
Playing games, surfing the internet, hanging out in bars, keyboard politics, and doing some work unimaginable to ordinary people.
A sexy, tall figure quietly appeared at the door, silently watching the young man working hard behind the large desk in the depths of the room, revealing a slight smile.
“Sorry, our company is not open today! Please close the door, thank you!”
Sensing someone walking over, Zhong Jing didn’t even lift his head as he coldly spat out a sentence.
“Hmm, then I’ll come back on Monday, little one.” The woman smiled slightly and turned to leave.
“Ah?” Zhong Jing’s hand paused, slowly raising his head, then standing up, his expression a bit embarrassed, “Master, why are you here…”
“You call me eight times a week, is it so surprising that I come once?”
Wan Yue was wearing a black fashionable Chinese-style horse-face skirt, charming and elegant. No matter how her clothing style changed, it couldn’t erase her inherent sexiness and allure, as well as her proud and cold demeanor.
Wan Yue walked to the corner, lazily leaning back on the sofa, lighting a cigarette with a snap, smiling as she looked at the furnishings in the room: “Cooped up here every day, you still enjoy it.”
“Doing the most mysterious and exciting work in the world, what more could I ask for? You’ve handed over the most important tasks to me, of course I have to take it seriously!”
Bringing Wan Yue a glass of wine, Zhong Jing grinned as he pulled up a chair and sat opposite the sofa, the cynicism on his face also lessened.
Before him was the guide who had led him into the mysterious world. Although the term “master” sounded more like playing house, and Wan Yue had never referred to him as “disciple” or “apprentice”, Zhong Jing greatly enjoyed this identity straddling the normal world and the vampire world.
“This time… you came for those two?”
Looking at her figure and appearance that hadn’t changed in over a decade, Zhong Jing lowered his voice.
“Them? That’s who Huang Gu and you are interested in. I was actually led by the nose by you guys for a while. However, my luck might really be good…”
Wan Yue sipped the expensive wine, after a brief moment of dreamy enjoyment, her gaze gradually became sharp, staring into Zhong Jing’s eyes, her tone slowing down: “15 years ago, a foreign vampire force, under the pretext of extracting raw materials for animal organ tissue preparations, sent something into the country, which then went into your family’s Zhong Pharmaceutical Group.”
“That thing appeared again in the Tang family not long ago, but those old turtles in the Tang family barely showed their faces before they were finished. Can you find out the relevant information from back then?”
Zhong Jing was first stunned, then slowly stood up, pacing back and forth in the room, his expression changing from surprise to silence, then to calmness, and finally he smiled: “Master, have you been waiting for this day to come all along, including bringing me into the vampire world?”
“What you’re talking about should be the Dark Arrow Unit’s encirclement and suppression of the Tang family in D City, right? You arranged for Huang Gu to go to D City 10 years ago, it should have been to secretly investigate the Tang family.”
“Yes, how does it feel?”
Wan Yue finished the wine she had been sipping, her face flushed, smiling even more charmingly: “The little boy from back then has grown up. These questions, you probably didn’t just think of today, did you?”
“You’ve always suspected that my dad’s company also had connections to the vampire world, and it started 15 years ago, then you chose me 13 years ago.”
Zhong Jing frowned, his voice very low: “You even knew a lot about my Big Brother’s identity and hinted at it to me… So what exactly am I?”
Looking at the young man before her who had accepted so many of her secrets, Wan Yue felt that her choice back then was very correct.
This young man’s connection with her was not just a child’s whim, nor was it simply the product of her own purpose. Rather, it was the insatiable curiosity for mystery and excitement in his bones.
Zhong Jing poured himself a glass of wine, drank it in one gulp, and sat back in the chair, staring hard at his former Superman sister, now his master whose true nature was hard to discern: “This is the first time in over 10 years that you’ve made a request of me. From the moment you handed over all the secrets here to me 3 years ago, I’ve been waiting.”
“People like me, there are probably quite a few in this world, right? Between the vampire world and the normal world, in many cases, a connecting link is needed. Seemingly in opposition for thousands of years, in fact, both rely on each other, both need proxy roles to exist in each other’s world.”
Faced with Zhong Jing’s almost questioning attitude, Wan Yue nodded with a smile, then shook her head: “What you’re talking about are called brokers. There are indeed quite a few around the world. They’re just agents for the two worlds to seek exchange of interests. You’re not that, you’re the warrior I’ve chosen.”
A flash of shock passed through Zhong Jing’s eyes, then disappeared, but he didn’t respond.
“Little one, why did you want to be Superman when you were young? I remember, you said you wanted to defeat all the bad guys in the world…”
Wan Yue walked to the corner, stroking the tender shoots of the plants, her tone surprisingly calm and gentle: “Then let me tell you, when the evil of the normal world and the evil of the vampire world might one day merge together, who should come to defeat them?”
“Brother Huang and Brother Zhao have told me some things. You left the Hermit Alliance 20 years ago, and it should have been at that time that you set your direction for today.”
Zhong Jing slowly nodded, a hint of self-mockery appearing at the corners of his mouth, “But I was different over 10 years ago. In a child’s world, everything is simple, good and evil must be clearly laid out in front to choose.”
“Yes, in the adult world, good and evil are often hard to distinguish. So in this matter, I must act alone, because there are too many things that can’t be seen clearly. To achieve the goal, I’ve used my connections from the past few decades to establish the secret resources you now control, as well as those you haven’t yet grasped.”
“So, little one, do you still want to go defeat all the bad guys in the world? Just like Superman.”
Wan Yue turned around, slowly walked in front of the young man, lowered her head and quietly looked at his face, that proud aura breaking out again.
Zhong Jing also slowly stood up, and after a long while, he nodded slightly: “Over the years, I could see that you, Huang Gu, and Zhao Peng have allowed some ordinary people who were blood invaded to not become real monsters, maintaining human dignity even in death. From the day I called you master, I was already a warrior.”
“I just love it when you little ones praise me, haha!”
Wan Yue actually revealed a girlish attitude, then burst into laughter, turning to walk towards the door.
“Master, 60 years ago, before you were blood invaded, what was your identity? I’ve always been curious.”
Zhong Jing called out to Wan Yue who was about to leave.
“60 years ago… if I say I was from the Dark Arrow Unit, would you believe me?”
With that, Wan Yue’s figure disappeared, leaving behind a dumbfounded young man.
