- Chapter 1 - A Kind Person Who Gives Food
“I will never love you”
In a room with a huge bed that makes you wonder what it’s for, and a set of furniture that was probably made by a famous craftsman, the man who became my husband today said this with a stern expression that was just as stern as the furniture.
Not really understanding, I waited for his next words.
“…Did you understand?”
It seemed like he didn’t say anything next. That meant I could ask questions.
“What exactly do you mean?”
“…Ah?”
My husband, Gerald Noel Drewett, lowered his low voice even further and frowned. But I thought this might be a matter of life and death for me, so I wanted to make sure.
“…I want food.”
“What?”
“Can I have food?!”
Oh my God! It really was a matter of life and death!
“What are you talking about? I have no intention of making you lack food, clothing and shelter.”
“You’ll give me food?”
“Of course.”
“Thank you!”
I couldn’t help but clench my fists. Abigail had done it. I no longer had to sneak into the kitchen. The chef at my birth family, the Count of Longhurst, pretended not to see, but it was still unsettling to eat while hiding.
My stepmother and stepsister were very strict in their judgement. Where did they learn that a person won’t die if they don’t eat for two days?
But it was time to say goodbye to that kind of life. I’m sure I won’t be full, but I won’t be so hungry I’ll no longer feel nauseous.
If that’s the case, then as a wife, I must encourage my husband so that he doesn’t change his mind. I straightened my back and looked him straight in the eyes. Ah, his blue eyes change shades. This is proof that I have a lot of magical power.
“What should I do?”
“What do you mean?”
“I learned that on the wedding night, a wife should leave everything to her husband, but I thought it would be a bit much to bother you… oh.”
“Wait wait wait, I can take it off.”
I untied the ribbon at the collar of my thin nightgown, and the front of it was completely open. The maids who looked after me dressed me quickly, so I didn’t notice, but it seemed to be very easy to put on and take off.
My husband looked shocked and put the gown that was hanging on the sofa over me.
“D-didn’t you hear me? I told you I won’t love you.”
“Eh, does that have anything to do with it?”
“That’s even worse than I thought…”
My husband’s brow furrowed even more as he left the room.
…Did that mean I can sleep here?
* * *
My husband was the second son of the Marquis of Drewett and was serving in the military. The warm, fluffy futon felt so good that when I woke up from a deep sleep, he had already gone off to work. I thought I should have seen him off. When I woke up, the head maid in my room had a shocked look on her face… Maybe I shouldn’t have slept in this room? I thought, but I decided not to say anything because I didn’t want to say anything that might upset her.
Because it’s such a warm and clean bed. I’d like to sleep here again if I could.
“…Ma’am, do you like it?”
My husband was the second son of a marquis, but he was given the title of Viscount for his military achievements. Viscount Noel. I thought he made a great achievement in a conflict or war a few years ago. So this mansion belonged to him, and I was both the mistress and the wife.
Oh well. But that’s okay.
I stared at my breakfast plate.
The fluffy, runny omelette had something in it. Cheese and something. Probably chopped vegetables. The shiny, rolled bread was warm and crisp on the outside and moist and fluffy on the inside. The sausage had fat oozing out from the popped skin, and when I bit into it, the juices oozed out! The soup was transparent and golden, with a variety of indescribable flavors. The sparkling fruits were colorful and looked brighter than the jewelry my mother-in-law liked. I haven’t tried any of them yet, though.
I still wanted to eat. I wanted to try some fruit, too. But I couldn’t fit it in. My stomach was already full. I couldn’t stop myself from eating everything, so I ate a bite of each one, but that was enough to fill me up. I wanted to eat, though.
“It’s very delicious… I’ll eat the rest for lunch.”
The head maid was shocked again.
‘I know.’
The leftovers were handed over to the servants so they don’t go to waste. But that’s not the point. I still wanted to eat. I didn’t want to waste so much food. This little stomach! This little stomach! How pathetic!
“…Thank you for your palate. I’ll prepare a new lunch for you. Eh?!”
The head maid blinked once or twice at the voice that had been interrupted. A new one for lunch? I could eat lunch properly too!? Didn’t that mean I really didn’t have time to get hungry? Right?
“Oh my… Warm and delicious lunch for lunch… Madam… you’re amazing…”
“…”
The head maid looked like she wanted to say something but was hesitant to say it, but I thought she was a kind person who gave me food.
After all, before I was born as Abigail Longhurst, in my previous life when I was a Demon King, I learnt the humans who gave me food were kind to me.
