- Chapter 3 - Bread porridge is delicious
‘I’m back.’
It was a delicacy I’m not used to, so my stomach must have been surprised. My stomach hurt so much that I thought back to my time as the Demon King, but I’m fine now.
Even though I was feeling faint, I thought the head maid must be kind after all, but no, she is kind because she gave me food. But did I do something to upset her?
“Ma’am?…Do you dislike bread porridge?”
I shook my head. There’s nothing I dislike.
I stared at the small plate on the bedside table. Since my stomach started hurting just before lunch yesterday, I haven’t been able to move and haven’t eaten since. When I woke up this morning, the head maid said, “Oh, please call me Tabatha by my first name, so it’s Tabatha.”
She set up this bedside table for me, saying that Tabatha should still be asleep. Amazing.
Just by looking at the steaming bread porridge, I could tell it was thick. It had a nice, gentle smell. But…
“This is what babies eat…Tabitha, have I done something wrong?”
I still remember my time as a demon lord from the time I was born, so I even remember what it was like to be a baby.
This was baby food.
“Well…”
For some reason, Tabatha’s hazel eyes were watering as she knelt down beside the bed. She gently placed both of her hands on my left hand.
“It’s not just for babies. It’s good for sick people, no, people who are physically weak.”
“I’m already better.”
“No, no, your stomach is still weak. Did you like anything at breakfast yesterday?”
“The sausage was delicious. And eggs, too.”
“I see. Then, let’s settle your stomach with this bread porridge and see how you feel. We’ll gradually increase the amount of food, and when your stomach doesn’t hurt anymore, we’ll have sausages. I’m sure by that time you’ll be able to eat the whole thing.”
“The whole thing.”
It was enough for three, no, four bites. I could only eat one bite.
I could have that juicy sensation four times!
“So first, let’s try our best and eat this bread porridge.”
“Yes!”
After gently tapping him, he let go of my left hand, so I took a spoonful of bread porridge and put it into my mouth.
It tasted… it tasted something other than bread! Milk and, I was not sure what it was! It’s kind of mellow! It’s different from what I ate when I was a baby! That’s why it smelled so good!
“Is it delicious?”
“Yes!”
“Thank you very much.”
While I was eating, Tabatha was smiling and staring at me. She’s so kind.
* * *
‘Wait wait wait wait wait what’s that? She’s like a child.’
“It’s not good for you to peek, young master.”
“You should stop being a young master too.”
The exchange between Tabatha and Abigail, seen through the door connecting the couple’s master bedroom and private room, was like that of a child and a nurse. Abigail’s expression was pale for a child, but Tabatha had the same face as when I was a child.
I saw Abigail again through the gap in the door, blowing on her spoon for an eternity. Isn’t she being cold towards me?
Was that the wicked woman they were talking about? A slut who switched men all the time?
The doctor confirmed that she was indeed a virgin. That alone shows that the rumors are exaggerated, but no matter how you look at it, I can’t imagine that anyone would consider her a wicked woman with that kind of behavior. I could understand the rumors that she just doesn’t have enough intelligence.
I sighed at my own prejudice and moved away from the door.
“Are you ready to become a husband?”
Rodney’s grin was annoying. I sighed again, as if pushing all the air out of my stomach.
“Anyway, he must have been treated unfairly. He made a decision based on rumors without even seeing the person in person.”
Honestly, I still didn’t feel like I could love her as a woman, but that’s just how aristocratic marriages are. It’s not something they should go out of their way to declare. I was foolish to swallow the rumors at face value and try to put a stop to her getting too cocky.
“I think it’s good to have a master who can reflect on his actions.”
“You really piss me off.”
I now understand that when I opened her nightgown, I was just thinking that it was the right thing to do.
I thought that she would have no resistance to such actions even without love, but if she was treated so poorly that she couldn’t even eat at her parents’ house, she may not have expected any affection from the beginning.
“Hey, don’t squat down there.”
“…Shut up, you’re noisy.”
As I squatted down, clutching my head, Rodney nudged me with his knee.
“That’s pretty bad, isn’t it? Even the servants would look down on a newlywed who was left alone on her wedding night.”
“Huh?”
What kind of logic was that?
“Well, I don’t think I’d want to serve a mistress that the master of the mansion doesn’t approve of. I don’t think I’d be treated any better no matter what I did.”
“I don’t remember hiring such a servant.”
“My father and mother don’t remember that either. But this is the first time we’ve had a mistress in this mansion. We’re the only ones who came from your parents’ Drewett family, the Coffeys, aren’t we? From the laundry maids to the housemaids, we can’t say for sure that there won’t be some who misunderstand the mistress they’ve never met before.”
If that were to happen, we’d take appropriate action as soon as we found out, Rodney continued in a nonchalant tone, but then he dropped his voice.
“But that’s only after your mistress has been hurt, right? That’s what a master would do to a mistress. I don’t think it’s right for a man to do that to a woman he doesn’t hate.”
Please stop… my stomach’s starting to hurt…
