- Chapter 4 - If you Work, you Get Bread, so if you Get Bread, you Work.
I was getting three meals a day. And everything was delicious! I had never seen such a feast since I became Abigail, let alone when I was a Demon King.
At first, I had bread porridge three times in a row, but it soon turned into fluffy, pillowy white bread. Then, little by little, I had soup with various ingredients melting in it, and yes, soup with meat that just fell apart! Last night, I had a stew with chunky root vegetables that were crushed with just my tongue. And finally, this morning, I was able to eat a whole sausage. It was bite-sized, but I was able to eat bread, soup, and fruit as well. It’s just like Tabatha said. Tabatha is amazing, isn’t she? I think she’s much more amazing than the governess at the Longhurst house. When I told her that, Tabatha laughed happily and said, “Oh my, my, my.” However, today was his day off, and when we had breakfast together, he said with a serious look on his face.
“No, you haven’t even eaten a fifth of what I have yet. You need to be able to eat at least half of what I have.”
“Of course. I’ll soon be able to eat twice as much as you.”
“…I’m looking forward to it.”
On the day I first encountered bread porridge, for some reason, he apologized to me, saying, “I’m sorry. I didn’t behave like a lady.” I didn’t know why I’d bitten it or why he apologized, but when I told him I didn’t mind, he looked a little strange. But from then on, we started eating together whenever it was convenient for him.
After all, he was the most important person in this mansion. It was because he was here that I could eat. What could I be worried about? But we didn’t share the bedroom. I still have that big, fluffy, clean bed all to myself.
In that case, in order to keep her husband from changing his mind, the wife must find another job.
“So, Tabatha, I want to work too.”
“…I’m not sure what you’re talking about, but for now, this is not your job, Madam.”
Tabitha took the mop from her hand.
Then she was taken out into the garden, and was told, “Come on, it’s time for today’s walk.”
Then, with the maid who was a potential maid holding a parasol, she leisurely walked around the garden. This was her third time around. In reality, the garden was much larger, but she couldn’t go where the mansion couldn’t be seen.
At first, Tabatha had heard that she was the head maid, but it seems that she was actually the head housekeeper and held the head maid position. I heard that this mansion, which had only one master, did not have any maids to begin with, and that they were in the process of selecting a maid to serve the wife. Anyway, Tabatha was busy, so she didn’t just stick to me. I thought it would be best if Tabatha was there, but it couldn’t be helped.
“Hey, what kind of work does a wife do?”
“…I don’t know.”
The maid wasn’t very talkative today. She continued her walk in silence. When she got to the fourth lap, the maid spoke up. Ah.
“But I think the first thing is to be loved by my master.”
“Yes, you failed.”
Rodney appeared, and the maid jumped up and down. She jumped quite a bit, so I was a little surprised.
The husband was there too. He looked grumpy. Rodney chases the maid, who was about to say something, back to the mansion. The husband holds the parasol he picked up for her.
“…So that’s what it is.”
“What’s the matter, sir?”
“Well, I’ve finished a section of work, so it’s time for a break.”
As I stared at my sir’s right elbow, which was raised upright, he took my left hand and let me hold it up.
“This is an escort! This is what the tutor was talking about!”
“…That’s it.”
For a moment he looked away as if he was holding something back, but he quickly returned to his usual sharp look.
Sir was big, so even though he seemed to be hiding it, it’s completely visible from below. In terms of height alone, he was probably about the same height as me, the Demon King.
“What were you talking about?”
“What was it?”
“The maid I was working with.”
“Oh, what is a wife’s job? Tabatha took my mop away from me.”
“Why did I become a mop in the first place?”
“If you want to eat, you have to work. At Longhurst, I was given bread for helping out as a maid. That’s why I’m good at cleaning.”
Only when my mother-in-law and friends are out, though. But they’re out all the time, so I got bread about once every two days.
“Yeah. I see… I see. I guess I need to pack up a few things after all.”
“What did you mean?”
“No, it’s fine. First of all, a maid’s job isn’t a wife’s job.”
“Yeah. Tabatha said the same thing… I heard that you’re off today, so what kind of work are you doing? I can help you with work on your estate, but I heard that you don’t have one.”
Maybe my husband actually had one too. In that case, maybe I could help out too? My mother-in-law didn’t work on the estate, so it might not be my “wife’s job”.
“Oh, apart from the military, I’m also in charge of the Drewett business – wait, help with the estate management, Longhurst? I’ve heard it’s quite wealthy, so there’s probably a lot of work to be done.”
“Yes. I can write the Earl’s signature exactly the same.”
“No, no, no, no, wait, wait, wait.”
