Forbidden to Capture Rare Cute Ghosts - Chapter 19
Nan Deng could only watch in disbelief as Lian Yi collapsed, his mind filled with worry and confusion.
In an instant, Lian Yi’s lips turned purple and his body temperature quickly escalated.
The rabbit hopped onto the bed, studying Lian Yi carefully, before biting hard onto one of his fingers.
Nan Deng quickly pushed it away, “Don’t bite, Xiao Tu!”
Lian Yi’s finger was unharmed, the rabbit couldn’t bite through the skin, it flicked its ears and retreated to the corner of the bed.
Initially, Nan Deng thought it was Lian Yi’s hand wound that hadn’t healed, but upon carefully rolling up his sleeve, he found that the bandage was not soaked in blood.
He was even more clueless as to what to do at this point. His first instinct led him to believe that his consumption of Lian Yi’s life essence might have caused his unconscious state.
Without any time to think, he hurried to the bathroom, soaking a towel in cold water before coming back to painstakingly dab Lian Yi’s face to bring down his temperature.
Even in his comatose state, Lian Yi’s brows were tightly furrowed, and his breathing was labored.
Nan Deng’s hands were shaking; he undid a button at Lian Yi’s collar, hoping this would help.
He sat down beside Lian Yi, aimlessly hugging his knees, his face a mask of helplessness.
This all happened so suddenly. Just a moment ago, Lian Yi was perfectly fine. It could even be said that he was doing well up until now.
When he came back last night, there were no signs of injury or discomfort, and he had gone to rest early.
Xiao Tu, as if sensing Nan Deng’s anxious state, hopped over to his side.
Nan Deng picked up Xiao Tu, his voice trembling on the verge of tears, “What should I do…”
After having lived together for so long, he didn’t wish for anything bad to happen to Lian Yi.
Nan Deng tried to recall the TV series he watched during this period. It was clear that Lian Yi was sick and needed medication.
He rose immediately, frantically searching everywhere.
Being unable to find anything resembling medicine after searching in the bedroom, study, living room, and even the kitchen and bathroom, Nan Deng felt desperate.
A few drawers were locked, leading to his further frustration.
The only hope left was Lian Yi’s phone, but he couldn’t figure out the unlock pattern. Out of desperation, he dialed for emergency services.
But he was a ghost, and especially during the daytime, his voice couldn’t be heard over the phone. The operator mistook it for a prank and hung up after a few attempts.
Nan Deng was out of options. He returned to Lian Yi’s side, seeing him not improving a bit, his heart was filled with increasing distress.
“If it’s a life essence deficiency… Do I need Fu Shui?” He wondered.
Making his way to the window, he gently pushed aside the curtain.
It was still morning, the sunshine dispersing lightly. Nan Deng mustered up the courage to reach out, revealing his semi-translucent fingertips to the light.
The exposure stung a bit, but it wasn’t too painful – he could tolerate it more than he had imagined.
Nan Deng was not keen on waiting idly by. He needed to think of an alternative plan.
With a determined mind, he picked up Xiao Tu, placing it by the bedside firmly saying, “Wait for me at home, I will be back soon.”
Xiao Tu seemed to anticipate Nan Deng’s next move, clenching onto his sleeve with its mouth, insisting on accompanying him.
“It’s daytime now,” Nan Deng reluctantly told Xiao Tu, “You’ll get hurt being exposed to the sun.”
But Xiao Tu wouldn’t back down, becoming surprisingly strong and not letting go.
Left without other choices, Nan Deng conceded, “Alright then… but you must hide really well, never come out.”
Placing Xiao Tu in his pocket, he took a final glance at the still unconscious Lian Yi, then left, phasing through the wall.
Once he was truly outside, fear crept into Nan Deng’s heart.
Repeating to himself, “It’s okay, it’s okay,” he carefully selected shadowy areas, heading towards the city center.
There were several pharmacies in the city center. They would routinely obtain a small amount of Fu Shui and various exorcism materials from the priest’s symbol store.
Nan Deng just needed to be cautious enough to evade the daytime patrolling exorcists, and stealthily sneak into a pharmacy to pilfer some medication.
Leaving the outskirts, the number of residents on the streets started increasing.
Nan Deng’s anxiety grew as he endured the scorching rays of the sun. Fortunately, his luck held out, and he quickly found a pharmacy.
There were two staff members in the pharmacy and a customer was inquiring about something. Nan Deng silently phased through the wall into the pharmacy.
Ordinary people can’t see spirits, and the number of patrolling exorcists during the day wasn’t large. Moreover, they would never expect a ghost daring enough to venture out in broad daylight.
Several bottles of specially made Fu Shui were placed behind the pharmacy counter. While the staff wasn’t watching, Nan Deng swiftly took one and slipped it into his pocket.
When he reached the dizzying array of shelves filled with different types of medicines, he was bewildered.
With so many medicines… which one should he take?
Unexpectedly, Xiao Tu popped out from his pocket, ignoring Nan Deng’s protest and jumping to the floor.
It opened its mouth and spat out a bottle of Fu Shui, looked at Nan Deng, and swallowed the Fu Shui bottle back.
“Huh?” Nan Deng’s eyes widened slightly.
Staring at Xiao Tu’s bottomless throat, a bold idea began to form in his mind.
Two staff members bid farewell to a customer, and a few more arrived.
No one in the pharmacy noticed that a box of medicine on a shelf from the back quietly shifted and then disappeared into thin air.
Nan Deng took one of each type of medicine, and Tu Zi swallowed them obediently, stuffing them all into its belly.
Eventually, when a staff member discovered that a bottle of Fu Shui had mysteriously vanished, he turned to ask his coworker, “Did you take it?”
His coworker was equally puzzled, “No, I thought you took it.”
The two then realized that there were glaring gaps on several shelves. By this time, Nan Deng had already made a hasty retreat with Xiao Tu.
The strength of the sunlight was growing, and Nan Deng didn’t dare let up. When he finally managed to return to Lian Yi’s place, he was left with an eerie sensation as if he’d been dreaming.
Upon his return to the room, Lian Yi was still in bed with no noticeable improvement.
Xiao Tu jumped out of his pocket, and Nan Deng picked it up, “Let’s… let’s start with Fu Shui, it’s the one in the small bottle.”
Xiao Tu opened its mouth to spit out a bottle of Fu Shui.
Unlike other medicines that couldn’t be consumed recklessly, Fu Shui was a substance that could be taken even without encountering a spirit. Nan Deng went to the kitchen to grab a cup and poured the Fu Shui from the bottle into it.
Lian Yi was still unconscious, so Nan Deng had to help him sit up against the soft padding of the headboard, spoon-feeding him bit by bit.
Xiao Tu jumped onto the bed and accidentally burped out a pile of medicine boxes.
After feeding Lian Yi the Fu Shui, Nan Deng found a box of fever-reducing medicine. He opened a capsule, mixed it with water, and had Lian Yi drink it.
Having done all of this, Nan Deng sat stupefied for a bit.
He hoped that Lian Yi would wake up soon; otherwise, with so much medicine left, he wouldn’t know what to use.
If…
Nan Deng lowered his head, looking at his own semi-translucent hands.
What if it didn’t work? Should he seek help from the Celestial Master?
After all, only a Celestial Master could see him, only they could hear his words.
He was faced with a situation like this for the first time, lacking any sort of experience. He was filled with uncertainty, not knowing if what he had done was right.
Fortunately, after giving the fever-reducing medicine, Lian Yi’s body temperature visibly started to decrease.
Nan Deng moved by his side, lying close to him.
His eyes were closed, silently praying.
Xiao Tu let out another burp, spitting out a few boxes of forgotten medicine.
It presented these boxes to Nan Deng happily, hoping for him to take another look. Turning its head, it caught sight of Nan Deng with his eyes shut tight, his body emitting an irregular glow.
Nan Deng remained oblivious, holding onto Lian Yi’s hand, feeling his warmth.
Time passed, and Lian Yi eventually woke up from his stupor.
He immediately felt the presence of someone lying next to him, not a semi-translucent spirit, but an actual, corporeal living being.
Right after, Lian Yi spotted Nan Deng.
Nan Deng’s eyes were closed, his breaths slow and steady. His black hair was spread out over his neck, one hand clutching the corner of their blanket and the other hand holding onto his.
Lian Yi almost thought he was dreaming, reaching his hand out to touch the side of Nan Deng’s face.
“Nan Deng?”
Nan Deng abruptly opened his eyes, a wave of dizziness washing over him.
He quickly realized that something was off about himself. He wasn’t feeling too well, a sense of oppression in his chest.
Soon, he heard his own heartbeat.
Unable to adapt, Nan Deng’s breath became erratic as he held onto his chest, panicking, “What’s happening to me?”
Was it because he got exposed to the sun, that he was near death?
Trying to calm him down, Lian Yi was shoved away by Nan Deng who ran hysterically towards the wardrobe intending to hide in it.
“Bang—”
Nan Deng carelessly bumped into the wardrobe door, only then realizing he couldn’t phase through wood anymore.
He yanked the wardrobe open, quickly dived in, and with another “bang,” closed the door behind him.
The bedroom grew quiet for a moment, and then footsteps approached the wardrobe.
Lian Yi opened the wardrobe to see Nan Deng curled up in the dark corner.
“Nan Deng,” He stooped down, extending a hand into the corner, “Don’t be scared, let me see.”
After a long moment, there finally emerged a slight stir inside the wardrobe. Half of a pale finger cautiously peeked out, softly making contact with Lian Yi’s palm.
