- Chapter 13 - A Proposal?
“Good morning, Lady Amy. Did you sleep well last night?”
I couldn’t help but glance at her stomach. It didn’t look like there was any change; did she really digest all that food?
Her fuel efficiency is pretty poor.
“Good morning, Lord Rex. Yes, I slept better than I ever have in my life. And I had a hearty breakfast too.”
She ate breakfast as well!
Jean-Jacques was smirking, and Hameslot was bowing deeply.
She ate quite a bit, it seems. Still, her slim waist remains the same. She must have a body type that would make girls who gain weight easily jealous.
“That’s good to hear. Today we’re going on a picnic in the forest, so I’m glad you’re feeling your best. You’ll also enjoy lunch—I’ve prepared a meal from Mahdavikia.”
“Oh, my! Then I’ll need to work up a good appetite!”
She plans to eat lunch, too.
Fine.
I made sure to have plenty of sandwiches prepared with that in mind. And, of course, I had Command store them.
Sorry for using you this way.
[Don’t worry about it.]
“But, Hameslot, are you really planning to come along? No offense, but this isn’t just an ordinary picnic.”
“You needn’t worry. In the worst-case scenario, I’m prepared to die as a shield for the young lady.”
Heavy. But I guess that’s what loyalty is all about. I can’t let this ultimate loyal retainer die in some unfortunate accident.
“That’s not quite what I meant. Odolski, I’m leaving Hameslot’s protection in your hands. Make sure he doesn’t get injured.”
“As you command.”
“I appreciate your concern, but please, focus on the young lady, not an old man like me.”
I get it. That’s why I’m deploying all our forces.
“Jean-Jacques and Mary will take care of that, so there’s no need to worry. I’m counting on you two.”
“As you wish.”
“Understood. Now, my lady, shall we?”
Hameslot was eyeing Mary with suspicion.
I get it. Mary’s someone who grew up in a seriously dangerous organization. But he shouldn’t worry.
“So, this is the forest connected to the magical beasts’ nest… It’s far greener and more beautiful than I imagined. I thought it would be a darker, more foreboding place.”
“Now that you mention it… looking at it again, you’re right. I guess I was so used to the forest that I just assumed it couldn’t be beautiful.”
You might not believe me, but as long as you don’t run into any magical beasts, the outer areas of the forest are filled with fresh air and negative ions, making it a truly refreshing place. You can find plenty of delicious fruit, and the wild animals are soothing. If it weren’t for the magical beasts, I’m sure it could be turned into a nature therapy destination with great tourism potential.
“True. We’re used to fighting bloody battles here, so seeing it from an outsider’s perspective is quite eye-opening.”
Could the shallow layers be used for tourism? No, it would become a liability if something went wrong.
And there you go, just when I start getting hopeful, they show up. Way to read the room.
“Well, it seems they’ve arrived… Mary.”
“Yes?”
“Lady Amy and Hameslot seem doubtful of your abilities. Put their minds at ease.”
“Understood. Now then… I’d ask you not to blink, as this will only take a moment.” Mary gave a quick wink and then walked off confidently.
Damn, he’s cool. He looks like a perfect, smiling beauty, but when his switch is flipped, his stride turns back into that of a man.
Command, what’s the status of that beast?
[Land Shark, threat level D. A magical beast that has adapted to life on land.]
Ah, the product of evolution.
With that threat level, Mary’s bound to win. And there he goes. How he manages to get behind his prey with that casual stroll is beyond me. It’s as if he’s just out for a walk, and yet his target remains oblivious. All that’s left is for him to stab it with that huge knife he hides under his skirt.
“Wh-what!? Who is she? Isn’t she just a maid?”
“My goodness! She moved so fast, I could barely follow her with my eyes! You have such impressive skills! If you had mentioned this, I would have sparred with you when you visited Canilunya!”
I couldn’t help but chuckle at the contrast between Hameslot’s shock and Amy’s delighted applause. Hameslot’s reaction was undoubtedly the right one in this case.
“Well, you see, I was Yumika’s bodyguard, so I couldn’t afford to draw too much attention. But now, let me reintroduce myself. I am Mary, a servant of Count Rex Hesselink.”
Ah, he revealed his identity. This must mean Mary has judged the Canilunya family to be trustworthy.
“Wait… you’re a man?”
“Correct. That’s why I never accompanied you to your bath. Sorry for the deception. Oh, and let’s keep this between us, alright?”
That gesture of pressing his index finger to his lips makes him look like a beautiful girl. But the smile is clearly that of a man. No wonder people get confused.
“I’d heard rumors of your madness, but Lord Rex, you truly are something! Not only do you have the Holy Knight Odolski and the Massacre General Jean-Jacques, but even someone as wonderful as her—no, him—on your team! I must have him!”
“Unfortunately, none of my retainers are for sale.”
“Then I’ll just have to marry you, Lord Rex. Now, it’s my turn. Everyone, please stay back.”
And here comes today’s main event. What kind of power will Amy show us? This will determine House Hesselink’s next steps.
“Another one’s coming! That’s… a Wood Warrior. I count… one, two, three.”
[Wood Warrior. A fallen spirit residing in trees. Threat level D.]
It’s ranked the same as the beast Mary just dealt with. Seems like a good match, but there are quite a few of them.
I saw Odolski preparing for battle in the distance. Jean-Jacques… wasn’t moving.
Does that mean he thinks this isn’t a problem?
“It’s no problem. I’m going! Lord Rex, please watch me.”
Today, Amy was dressed in a practical pants outfit, a far cry from the slim dress she wore yesterday. She had a baton-like object at her waist and protective gear—gauntlets, elbow guards, knee pads, and boots covering key points.
[What looks like a baton is a magic wand used by wizards. It’s a device for controlling magical energy.]
“So, she’s a wizard?”
“Her ability to control magic is highly refined. I saw it in action when she visited Canilunya before—she’s quite remarkable.”
Magic control? How does someone even feel that? Maybe it’s something only years of experience can tell.
[Jean-Jacques is one of the finest earth magic users of his time. It’s said that wizards possess special eyes that allow them to see magic.]
Earth magic. Sounds kind of plain, doesn’t it? Not as flashy as fire or ice. It feels like the type of power a lesser boss in a group of villains would have.
[Earth magic’s versatility surpasses that of other elements. Jean-Jacques earned the title “Massacre General” because he can bury a vast number of enemies alive by summoning huge amounts of earth.]
Okay, I take back what I said about it being plain. I’d always ignored it, but massacre really does mean killing everyone, right? How many people did this old guy kill to earn a title like that?
[Jean-Jacques’ name is feared both domestically and abroad, often equated with demons or monsters.]
Alright, let’s stop thinking too deeply about this. Time to cheer on Amy.
Two of the three Wood Warriors had already been reduced to ashes.
“A fire mage, huh? I’m no expert, but she seems pretty skilled.”
“You’d think so, right? Well, she’s definitely an amazing mage, but that’s not all. Isn’t that right, Gramps?”
“Indeed. That’s precisely why I’ve been encouraging the idea of a marriage alliance with the Canilunya family. She possesses the rare talent of being highly skilled in both magic and hand-to-hand combat. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to call that ability a threat. If she joined the military, it’s easy to imagine she would become a prominent figure in the near future,” Jean-Jacques spoke passionately about Amy’s talent.
I get it, talented people are valuable to keep around.
“I didn’t mention this earlier because I didn’t think anyone would believe me, but I watched that young lady utterly dominate Canilunya’s private soldiers in a mock battle. Look, there she goes.”
The last remaining Wood Warrior, in desperation, charged at Amy.
She quickly stowed her wand, dropped her stance, and, just as the creature was about to collide with her, thrust her fist forward. With a loud crack, the Wood Warrior shattered, but she wasn’t done. In one smooth motion, she closed the gap, drove her knee into what would have been the creature’s stomach if it were human, and split its body in two.
“Impressive. Truly remarkable.”
“How was that? As you can see, I’ve mastered both magic and combat. I’m confident I won’t be a burden to you, Lord Rex.”
“Even without the marriage alliance, I would love for you to join my household. I’m in awe of the immense skill and mental strength required to excel in such different fields—magic and martial arts—at such a high level. It’s truly humbling.”
“To receive such high praise from you, Lord Rex, who holds the title of Lord Protector, is a great honor. Most men don’t find such traits in a woman appealing. I always assumed they preferred someone gentler and more delicate.”
“Dislike being protected by a strong woman, do they? Don’t worry, Lady Amy. In return for showing me your value, I’ll show you what I’m capable of. Come forth, Gorimaru, Drazo!”
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! The demonstration is about to begin.
From the sky descended two enormous summoned beasts. Hameslot nearly collapsed, while Lady Amy’s eyes widened in shock.
Ha, they’re both so affectionate. Drazo, stop nibbling. Gorimaru, no grooming.
“Seriously!? You didn’t need to summon both of them!”
“Hameslot! Please, retreat behind me! Quickly!”
With the two beasts looming behind me, I called out to the utterly stunned Amy, “This is my power. I’m stronger than you. You can safely marry into my house.”
