Chapter 5: Questioning Ghosts
***
“It’s not locked.”
Liu Haoyu gently pushed open the door and peeked inside through the gap.
Fortunately, there was nothing in the room.
No pale hand suddenly reached out to grab him, and there were no other hateful, resentful eyes staring at him from behind the door gap.
Nothing happened at all, in the quiet room, there were only a few empty iron wires for hanging clothes.
The evening breeze blew open the tattered curtains, and the bright moonlight shone through the window into the room, illuminating the dim space.
But after the wind stopped, the room once again fell into darkness.
Quiet.
Dead quiet.
It was then that Liu Haoyu finally discovered that the room’s door had somehow been closed.
Silently, without giving him any chance to react.
Door closed, wind stopped, this room could be said to be terrifyingly dark.
Liu Haoyu turned on his flashlight while taking out a candle from his pocket.
This candle was also the lighting method he had placed beside his bed last night.
Even without any lighting, this type of candle would ignite by itself.
The prerequisite being that it encountered something unpleasant.
“Whoosh~”
The evening wind blew again, pushing open the curtains while letting moonlight flood the room once more.
But unlike before, on the previously empty clothesline, a bright red wedding dress had suddenly appeared.
Its sleeves and skirt were fully spread out, as if someone had been hung alive on the rope.
A chilling sensation rose from beneath Liu Haoyu’s feet, that death-bringing aura slowly crawling up his spine.
At the same time, the wick of the candle in Liu Haoyu’s hand trembled and slowly raised a flicker of flame.
That wavering and dim flame illuminated Liu Haoyu’s face.
This also meant that something unpleasant had entered the room.
But even so, Liu Haoyu still chose to walk towards that red wedding dress.
Taking heavy steps, this man finally arrived in front of the wedding dress.
The cold night wind was still blowing steadily, making the wedding dress hanging on the rope sway back and forth.
The dusty room, crumbling walls, the window that was about to fall off…
All these things were completely at odds with the red wedding dress before Liu Haoyu’s eyes.
The extreme sense of incongruity brought even stronger unease and fear.
Even Liu Haoyu with his steel nerves, looking at this scene before him, had his heart in his throat.
Looking at the bright wedding dress before him, after hesitating for a moment, he slowly reached out his hand.
Then taking the soft wedding dress in his hand, he boldly took a sniff.
It wasn’t the smell of rotting corpses, nor was it the stench of blood.
Instead, like those red embroidered shoes, it had a faint fragrance.
Though it couldn’t be called particularly refreshing, it definitely wasn’t unpleasant either.
“The smell… isn’t bad.”
For Liu Haoyu who was used to seeing ghosts and monsters, this smell was indeed unexpected.
However… could someone tell him.
Why did the candle in his hand just go out?
Liu Haoyu looked at the extinguished candle in his hand with bewilderment, feeling a bit lost.
Did the fierce ghost just run away like that?
Just now Liu Haoyu only felt the gaze on him freeze for a moment, then instantly vanish without a trace.
As if it had seen something perverted.
But his action just now shouldn’t count as perverted, right?
He just smelled the clothes, that’s all.
“Never mind.”
Human hearts are hard enough to fathom, let alone a ghost’s thoughts?
Liu Haoyu didn’t want to worry about too many things, he took down the wedding dress hanging on the rope, folded it neatly, and placed it on the ground.
Using this as a medium, he stuck four candles on the east, south, west, and north walls.
The flames lit up immediately, and Liu Haoyu returned to the center of the room, inserting the last two candles in front of the red wedding dress.
The reason for doing this was simple, humans and ghosts walk different paths, it’s very difficult and even against the natural order for humans to see ghosts.
But through this method, one could communicate and interact with spirits.
Simply called “questioning ghosts.”
Liu Haoyu placed a small dish between the two candles, and bit his index finger, dropping several drops of blood into the center of the dish.
As the blood fell, Liu Haoyu kept silently reciting his name in his mind, this was to fortify his consciousness and prevent his soul from being directly taken away during the communication with the spirit.
And while Liu Haoyu was silently reciting his name, the four candles in the east, south, west, and north extinguished.
Then strange things began to happen, like something being dragged around, a “swish… swish…” sound kept echoing in the room.
Stopping and starting, rhythmic while also making people hold their breath involuntarily.
Then, the window produced a “creaking” sound like fingernails scraping across it.
More terrifyingly, something outside the door was frantically pounding on it, with such force that the already decrepit door became even more unstable.
Many things wanted to come in…
But these weren’t Liu Haoyu’s target.
“Liu Haoyu… Liu Haoyu…”
To find the fierce ghost in this haunted house, Liu Haoyu could only recite his name over and over, holding onto his true self, not letting his spirit be taken by ghosts.
Finally, the room’s door was burst open, the window completely shattered, each sound like a countdown to death, constantly approaching Liu Haoyu’s position.
And the name that should have been recited in his mind somehow began echoing in his ears.
“Liu Haoyu… Liu Haoyu…”
They were lingering around him, greedy eyes staring at this man’s back, waiting until he could no longer hold onto his true self, then they would surge forward and devour him.
But even pushing to this extent, Liu Haoyu still hadn’t discovered where the fierce ghost of this haunted house was.
His consciousness was also gradually becoming unable to hold on.
Finally, the two candles in front of the wedding dress went out.
At this moment, all the chaotic sounds around disappeared with them, like music suddenly cut off, disappearing so abruptly, so discordantly, giving rise to an empty, deathly silent fear.
After it became quiet, above Liu Haoyu’s head came the sound of swallowing.
There’s something above!
That thing was getting closer!
Fear beyond death suddenly flooded into Liu Haoyu’s heart.
Now he could only open his eyes and shout loudly.
“Wandering spirits, begone!”
When he stood up, all the unknown, all the fear disappeared with it.
By now Liu Haoyu was drenched in sweat, taking big gulps of air.
To “question ghosts,” he had drawn all the wandering spirits within several kilometers.
But he just couldn’t draw out the fierce ghost in this haunted house.
And this situation meant one thing.
The fierce ghost in this haunted house had strength far beyond his imagination.
