Chapter 21: The Mantis Stalks the Cicada, Unaware of the Oriole Behind
***
Shortly after Susie left, Verose and the others also departed one by one. The One-Eyed Wolf smiled at Barna, saying “good brother” before leaving the living room as well.
After the commotion, only silence remained.
Barna turned the money pouch upside down and shook it. A few copper coins clattered to the ground. The sound wasn’t loud, but to him, it felt painfully jarring.
He had finally gotten a high-paying assassination job, yet he had lost so thoroughly.
Sighing, he slumped into the sofa opposite and lit some tobacco.
The potion quickly took effect. The poisoned young man frowned, and finally sat up on the sofa, holding his head.
The first thing he thought of was Verose.
“Brother, where’s Verose’s corpse? Where did you hide it?”
As he spoke, he noticed the surroundings.
Why was the living room so messy, as if it had been ransacked? And the footprints on the floor – there must have been more than two people here earlier, right?
Could it be that his brother found it too tiring to hide the body alone and called for help?
The young man’s mind raced with wild thoughts while Barna remained silent.
The tobacco in his hand was almost finished. If his brother still didn’t have the sense to stop asking questions, Barna felt he might progress from silence to profanity.
…
After leaving Barna’s mansion, Verose felt light as a feather.
The pressure that had been on her shoulders earlier had vanished like smoke. Not only was she unharmed, but her magic level had even progressed a bit. This kind of good fortune, she hoped for more and more.
By now, the sky had darkened. The moon hung in the night sky, dotted with stars. She had originally planned to go straight back to her residence for a good sleep, but her stomach growled untimely.
She gently rubbed her stomach with her right hand, sighing helplessly.
This hunger couldn’t be satisfied by just eating food. What she needed to eat was monsters, or more precisely, the magic crystals inside monsters.
It had only been a few days since she last ate a monster. If it weren’t for the monster at the inn being too weak, she wouldn’t be hungry again so soon.
Thinking back to that pig-man now, Verose felt a surge of craving, followed by a touch of resentment.
If it weren’t for that damned Great Sage Lyla ruining things, she would have eaten that pig-man long ago. Then she wouldn’t need to be here looking for monsters to eat again today!
She’d better not find an opportunity, or else she’d make sure Lyla tasted what it’s like to go hungry!
…
When night fell and everything quieted down, the sound of insects became more pronounced. Most of the mansions in the wealthy district were lit up, their golden light shining through windows onto the streets, blending with the streetlights.
But no matter how bright the lights were, they couldn’t illuminate the entrance of one particular villa.
There, only by the faint moonlight could one vaguely make out the outlines of things, standing in stark contrast to the surroundings.
A little girl in an expensive dress stood at the entrance of this villa. She poked at her lips with her chubby index finger, her watery eyes full of longing.
In front of her, a kind-looking old grandmother leaned on a cane. A basket hung from her right arm, while her left hand held a handful of candies, which she held out in front of the little girl.
“Come, come with me. There are endless candies to eat.”
The crystal-colored candies sparkled brilliantly in the moonlight. Drool dripped from the corner of the little girl’s mouth. She instinctively wanted to reach out and grab the candies, but seemed to remember her parents’ warnings and stopped.
Don’t eat things from strangers, and don’t go with strangers.
“What’s wrong? Are these candies not to your liking? Don’t worry, grandma has many, many more candies.”
The old grandmother scattered the candies in her left hand on the ground, then reached into the basket hanging from her arm. Next, she pulled out another large handful of crystal-colored candies and scattered them on the ground.
That basket seemed like a bottomless pit. No matter how much she took out, she could always grab countless more candies. At this point, the little girl’s eyes were filled with nothing but these candies, her drool uncontrollably dripping onto the ground.
“If you come with grandma, all these candies will be yours.”
In the end, the little girl couldn’t resist. She walked step by step towards the old grandmother.
Her gaze was fixed on the candies. She didn’t notice the old grandmother’s mouth creepily stretching into a grin, revealing a mouth full of sharp, monstrous teeth.
Almost there, almost there. Once the little girl truly came to its side, it could bite off the little girl’s head in one bite!
However, at this moment, a low whisper sounded not far behind it.
“Come, come here. There are endless magic crystals to eat…”
Magic crystals?!
Those were the essence of monsters, much more delicious than humans!
The old grandmother quickly turned around, looking towards the sound. At the corner of the street, she saw a pair of fair hands holding a large number of magic crystals. With each shake, these magic crystals fell from the palms, crashing onto the street.
Those hands were like a bottomless pit. With just a shake, endless magic crystals seemed to be born from within.
They were real magic crystals!
It couldn’t resist such temptation. Throwing away the basket and cane in its hands, it crawled on the ground, rushing towards the magic crystals on all fours.
At the same time, its long tongue stretched out of its mouth, swinging wildly with its movements, drool flying everywhere.
Seeing this scene, the little girl behind it rolled her eyes upward and fell backward stiffly, fainting from fright.
Arriving in front of those hands, the old grandmother was about to devour the magic crystals on the ground. As it looked up, it saw itself in the mirror right in front of it.
In the mirror, it leaned on a cane, expressionless, with an extremely eerie light in its murky eyes.
After a moment of bewilderment, the real one suddenly clutched its head and started screaming hysterically. The old grandmother’s disguise was completely torn apart, revealing its true monster form.
It was a hunched, skeletal remnant of a body, somewhat similar to an undead.
But even such a monster, upon seeing itself in the mirror, rolled on the ground in pain. Then, the old grandmother in the mirror reached out and pulled it into the mirror.
Having done all this, the magic mirror turned into a beam of black light and plunged into the heart of the black-dressed girl. The magic crystals on the ground also vanished.
Touching her belly, the feeling of hunger was completely gone.
This was how Verose ate monsters. The magic mirror could easily devour monsters weaker than her or in a dying state. This undead’s magic level was much weaker than hers, so she could directly summon the magic mirror to eat it.
As for the magic crystals, they were just things she conjured to lure this monster.
Ignoring the little girl lying unconscious on the ground, Verose lifted her foot to leave. However, after just a few steps, her vision was surrounded by a white mist.
A faint fragrance wafted to her nose. The sound of splashing water mingled with the chirping of birds, making her blood race.
Then, she heard a whisper near her ear.
“Come, come here. There are endless busty beauties to play with~”
