- Chapter 7 Part 1 - Do Immortals Really Exist in This World?
Ten commanders returned from their homes, eyes red and swollen from shedding tears. Yesterday, their expressions were a mix of sorrow and despair. Today, despite their reddened eyes, they were full of vitality, their mouths curved into wide smiles. They were all waiting for Ye Mumu to bring water!
At that moment, chaos erupted at the entrance of the General’s mansion as refugees caused a disturbance. Zhan Chengyin instructed Tian Qin to investigate. Shortly after they left, the crowd gathered outside grew larger, their voices so loud that the commotion was clearly heard inside the mansion.
Zhan Chengyin rose and approached the entrance, only to hear the crowd shouting:
“General, we beg you to open the granary and release grain!”
“General, you clearly have rice. Why are you hoarding it? Will you watch the people of Zhenguan starve to death?”
“General, please save us! We don’t want to die of hunger!”
Over two hundred people had gathered at the mansion’s entrance. Their leader, Liu Si, had a sinister look with sunken eyes and protruding cheekbones. He was acquainted with the father who had exchanged his children the day before; both were former street thugs.
Seeing Zhan Chengyin emerge, Liu Si incited the crowd, “The General is here! Beg him to release the grain. Our survival depends on him!”
Zhan Chengyin’s eyes darkened as he surveyed the agitated crowd. “There is no rice in the General’s mansion. Leave at once!”
Liu Si sneered, “General, just because you say there’s no rice, we’re supposed to believe you?” He dragged out a bruised and battered old woman from the corner, who clutched a three-year-old girl tightly in her arms. The old woman’s face was bloodied, her tear-filled, clouded eyes unable to meet the General’s gaze.
Liu Si produced a piece of yellow paper that had wrapped rice balls, a few grains of white rice still clinging to it. The starving crowd swallowed hard at the sight. White rice! Even a few grains were coveted. Before the drought, they couldn’t even afford polished rice. Now, with famine everywhere, it was even more precious!
“General, you gave this old hag food, so why not us? You clearly have grain,” Liu Si accused. “Are you planning to let the entire town starve to death?”
As Liu Si finished speaking, the whole crowd began to shout:
“Please, General, open the granary and release the grain!”
“General, give us a chance to live!”
Hundreds knelt before the General’s mansion, begging Zhan Chengyin to release the grain. But he had none to give. The hundreds of bags of flour from earlier had to be prioritized for the army, or the last 200 warhorses would be lost! He couldn’t afford to relent on this matter.
Seeing Zhan Chengyin unmoved, Liu Si suddenly threw the beaten woman and her child at his feet. He snarled, “Tell them, didn’t the General give you food? Wasn’t there meat in the rice balls?”
Upon hearing that the rice balls contained meat, many gulped hard. The woman, barely alive from her beating, refused to speak. The boy, Yang’er, shielded his mother and furiously yelled at Liu Si, “You conspired with my father to eat my brother and sister, and now you won’t even spare my mother! I’ll kill you!”
The ten-year-old child tried to fight Liu Si but was kicked to the ground. As Liu Si prepared to stomp on the child’s chest—
Zhan Chengyin’s sword flashed, slicing through Liu Si’s throat in one swift strike. Blood sprayed everywhere. Many of the rioters, terrified, shrank back and retreated.
The last person who had dared to harm someone from the General’s mansion had been sent to the battlefield—and perished. But the General’s mansion had food! Leaving meant certain starvation, while being dragged to the battlefield also meant death. Either way, death was inevitable. They just wanted to die with full bellies!
Zhan Chengyin’s act of violence stunned the crowd into silence. Yet no one left. They remained kneeling, firmly believing the General had food. Even if it was just one bite, they were willing to die for it!
Zhan Chengyin gripped his sword hilt tightly, his hands trembling! His eyes bloodshot as he stared at the kneeling townspeople.
Just as the situation reached a tense stalemate, Chen Kui and Chen Wu came running out, overjoyed. “General! The water has arrived!”
