I Became Famous After I Became a Parrot in the Movie Star's House - Chapter 22
Bai Gaoxing doesn’t know that Li Pu has discovered his selfie. He only knows that he has somehow survived the day in a daze. When he goes to bed, he lies on Li Pu’s pillow without hesitation, sensing the lingering presence and pretending that the other person is still there.
The next morning, he stares at the food box, noticing there’s only a thin layer of food left.
He clearly calculates the amount, so how come there’s so little left so quickly?
Before he can figure it out, the sound of the door rustling open catches his attention. Mei Youshu has arrived.
Bai Gaoxing turns around and flies over, deliberately stopping two meters away from him. “Good morning! Have you eaten?” he greets.
Mei Youshu pushes his sunglasses up and gives a stiff smile. “Hello, Dabai…”
He doesn’t step back.
Bai Gaoxing looks at the young man standing still and feels relieved.
In the two days since Li Pu left, Mei Youshu has been coming by every day for a bit. With his deliberate efforts, the young man goes from facing the wall when they meet to no longer trembling—as long as Bai Gaoxing doesn’t look directly at him.
Little does he know, Mei Youshu’s legs are so weak that he can barely stand.
It is easier when Li Pu is around—at least he has someone to back him up. But now, it is just him and Bai Gaoxing, which makes him feel like he is reliving the terror of being locked in a chicken coop in the countryside as a child…
Think about the five hundred yuan.
Bai Gaoxing notices the once listless young man suddenly perk up. Mei Youshu walks straight to the cabinet where the bird food is stored, filling a box with quick, efficient movements before heading to the kitchen to boil water.
Bai Gaoxing follows him and hears Mei Youshu exclaim after checking the water dispenser, “Huh, why is there so much water?”
Bai Gaoxing: Ah, that’s because I boiled it last night.
Yawning, Bai Gaoxing asks, “Want some water?”
“Thanks, I’m not thirsty yet, I…” Mei Youshu’s body freezes, his voice catching in his throat, like the bubbling sound of boiling water.
After a long while, he stiffly turns around, his neck creaking as though it has rusted, making an imaginary creaking sound.
An indescribable look of terror fills his eyes.
Being stared at by such eyes, Bai Gaoxing feels tempted to play a little and slowly walks forward. “Dashu~ What do you want for breakfast today? How about lunch?”
“Dashu, how’s work going?”
“Dashu, it’s a nice day. Want to go out and play?”
The closer he gets, the more Mei Youshu retreats. Bai Gaoxing’s voice and tone grow more and more like Li Pu’s.
“Youshu, I’ll contact Sister Li about this matter. You don’t need to worry about it for now.”
That’s what he hears Li Pu say over the phone.
Mei Youshu collapses onto the ground.
He must be terrified. Bai Gaoxing stares at Mei Youshu’s hair, which, though short and stiff, makes the young man look like a hedgehog.
What should he do? How should he comfort his temporary caretaker?
Bai Gaoxing: Let me sing a song for you.
As Bai Gaoxing hums a tune, Mei Youshu is already shocked and confused.
It’s not like he hasn’t heard from Li Pu that Dabai can speak fluently, and he has even braced himself to hear Dabai’s random chatter. But he never, ever thought… that Dabai could imitate Brother Li’s voice so perfectly!
It’s one thing for parrots to mimic their owners’ voices, but to imitate this well… Is it really not a demon??
Just now, it almost sounded like Li Ge had returned and was standing right in front of him.
But when it comes down to it, what really terrifies him is the sharp bird’s beak getting closer and closer—everything else is secondary.
Mei Youshu wishes he could cover his sunglasses with something, so he doesn’t have to see the parrot, but the thought of hearing Li Ge’s voice without being able to see him feels even more terrifying.
By the time his chaotic thoughts settle, he has already filled the bottle in the bird’s cage with fresh cold water and is sitting on the sofa, wiping the sweat from his forehead.
Bai Gaoxing sees how tired he looks and decides not to bother him, heading instead to the top of the aquarium to feed the fish.
Bai Gaoxing counts, “One, two, three…”
Mei Youshu, who has stayed up until midnight, feels drowsy and on the verge of falling asleep. His eyes glaze over, and it almost looks like something is constantly falling into the fish tank, with the fish fighting over it—
What’s falling in there!?
Mei Youshu suddenly jolts awake. He rushes to the aquarium in just a few steps, almost pressing his face against the glass to see.
Scared to death, it turned out to be just fish feed. He lets out a sigh of relief. For a moment, he thinks it is something messy. If something happens while he is house-sitting, how would he ever explain it to Brother Li…Wait, who’s throwing in the feed…
Mei Youshu slowly lifts his head, his gaze meeting Bai Gaoxing, who is perched atop the tank. Bai Gaoxing tilts his head as if gesturing, holding another pellet of fish food, and under the young man’s watchful eye, drops it through the crack.
“Stop—stop throwing it in!” Mei Youshu says, trembling. He hasn’t forgotten the half-awake scene earlier—Dabai must have already thrown a lot of feed into the tank. If he keeps feeding the fish, they’ll probably die.
He tries to raise his hand to shoo the parrot away, but it doesn’t work. Instead, the bird grabs onto his arm—and climbs up onto him!
Mei Youshu wants to shake his arm to get it off, but he is afraid of hurting the parrot, so he stands there stiffly, too scared to move.
In the end, Bai Gaoxing jumps off his arm on his own, ending the standoff.
Dealing with people is so much more interesting. Bai Gaoxing watches as Mei Youshu, looking completely drained, shuffles into the kitchen with heavy steps.
By the way, this guy has already slept for a few hours—it’s midday now.
Mei Youshu’s cooking skills are not much worse than Li Pu’s, but he has a preference for extremely spicy food. Bai Gaoxing doesn’t know this. Seeing the fragrant dish, he rushes over for a bite. A second later, under Mei Youshu’s confused gaze, he coughs violently, flaps his wings, and darts to the kitchen to turn on the faucet, rinsing his mouth with cold water.
It was incredible… Mei Youshu follows him into the kitchen, watching in awe as the parrot turns on the faucet and lifts his head to rinse his mouth.
“That’s amazing, so smart,” Mei Youshu finally manages to say after a long pause.
Bai Gaoxing looks at him speechlessly, though he is more annoyed with himself—Li Pu isn’t home, and yet, out of habit, he thinks someone would stop him from eating.
“No spicy! No spicy!” he squawks.
But Mei Youshu, holding his phone carefully, shows a message from Li Pu. He has sent it hurriedly after seeing Dabai choking.
[Don’t let Dabai eat random things.]
The cold and ruthless words shatter Bai Gaoxing’s dream of indulging in whatever he wants while Li Pu is away.
Mei Youshu raises the phone and says, “Your master doesn’t allow it.” Then, he pulls the plate away from the parrot.
Bai Gaoxing’s feathers droop in disappointment.
Mei Youshu can’t help but laugh. It is the first time he has seen such human-like emotions in a bird. The contrast between the cute appearance and the sulking attitude is hilarious.
Bai Gaoxing flies back into his cage and sulks, eating only half a box of bird feed. His frustration stops him from finishing the whole box. Then, he takes a nap. When he wakes up, Mei Youshu has already cleaned the table.
But Mei Youshu doesn’t leave. Instead, he takes out the key Li Pu has given him and unlocks a door Bai Gaoxing has never seen opened before.
Bai Gaoxing stands up, listening attentively. He is sure it is a door that has never been opened before—because he has never seen Li Pu go in that direction.
Immediately, Bai Gaoxing leaps out of the cage, turns sharply, and glides over to Mei Youshu’s current position.
The afternoon sun stings his eyes as unfamiliar scenery floods the room through a window, filling the space with freshness.
It is a second bedroom, likely meant for guests. The room is fully furnished, with the bed covered by a dust-proof sheet. Judging by the layer of dust on the table, it hasn’t been used in a long time.
“Cough… How long has it been since this room was aired out?” Mei Youshu covers his nose as he opens the window, his actions stirring up a storm of dust from the windowsill.
Bai Gaoxing quietly steps aside. He has just taken a bath last night and isn’t in the mood for another today.
Mei Youshu turns around to see the white parrot trying to squeeze through the crack in the door. His scalp tingles with a mix of amusement and exasperation. He grabs a rag from the bathroom, washes it, and waves it at the parrot, who is obviously following him.
“I’m just airing out the unused rooms and wiping up some dirt. I won’t touch your master’s things,” he reassures Bai Gaoxing with a smile.
Just like a dog guarding the house. With that thought, Mei Youshu decides to take advantage of the strong wind and opens all the remaining doors, ready for a thorough cleaning. However, his plan is interrupted by the sudden ringing of his phone.
“Sister Li?”
“Now?”
“Alright, I’ll head back soon.”
After ending the call, Bai Gaoxing watches as the previously sluggish young man suddenly springs into action as if energized. He quickly throws on his coat, leaves the keys behind, and rushes out without so much as a glance at Bai Gaoxing.
Bai Gaoxing: Well, guess I’ll wait for Li Pu to come back.
He glances at the clock on the wall—it is two in the afternoon. If Li Pu’s plane isn’t delayed, he’ll likely be home by evening.
Feeling relaxed, Bai Gaoxing plans to take a nap first, then wake up in the evening to watch TV until Li Pu returns.
Bang!
A sudden thud comes from the second bedroom, the one Mei Youshu has just opened. Bai Gaoxing reluctantly drags himself off the soft sofa and hurries over to check.
It turns out the wind has knocked a decoration off the table. He flies up and kicks it further from the table’s edge to prevent the fragile, glass-like ornament from breaking—he’d definitely get blamed for that.
But he hadn’t expected Mei Youshu to leave in such a rush that he didn’t even close the windows properly.
Shaking his head, Bai Gaoxing flutters toward the other rooms to see if anything important has been blown down by the wind.
The three remaining rooms are all bedrooms, but two of them are completely empty. Maybe Li Pu hasn’t decided what to do with them yet. After all, living alone, extra rooms don’t have much use.
Just as he is about to head back, Bai Gaoxing notices a half-open door.
He has never been in that room before. Squeezing through the gap, he is stunned by the sight before him.
Is this… a study room?
Bookshelves line the walls on three sides, filled with books stacked from floor to ceiling, giving the room a library-like atmosphere. The shelves are a cool, dark color, not oppressive, but all the books are uniformly colored—almost like they aren’t real books. The lighting is also different from the rest of the house. Instead of a ceiling light, large studio lights are placed around the room, including ring lights and soft boxes, making it feel more like a photo studio than a study.
But why are there so many lights?
Wait… what is that? Bai Gaoxing freezes.
Previously, his eyes had been focused upward, so he hadn’t noticed the large laptop in the corner or the pile of equipment clamped next to it. Now, as he hops onto the swivel chair, he takes in the array of gadgets and realizes some of them seem oddly familiar.
Microphones, cameras, recording devices, speakers, desktop computer…
Bai Gaoxing’s eyes scan the equipment one by one, reflecting a gentle metallic glimmer, and his mouth slightly parts in awe.
This gear is more advanced and sophisticated than anything he has used before. Just by looking at it, one can sense the high cost and professionalism of the equipment! Given the specialized tools surrounding him and Li Pu’s habit of keeping the door closed, the conclusion is becoming clear.
Without hesitation, Bai Gaoxing pounces on the equipment, ignoring the thin layer of dust that clings to his feathers. A spark of excitement lights up his eyes.
My dear friends!
It is worth the long disconnect from the Internet.
The fun had finally been found!
