I Really Didn't Want the Long Aotian to Be My Wife [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 18
When Wei Zhen Ge woke up, he didn’t follow his usual routine of washing up quickly, eating breakfast, and saving up time to do a set of exercises before morning classes.
He sat on his bed, his gaze shifting to the side. It landed on his study desk by the window, more precisely, on the desk drawer.
The drawer was closed, but he could see a pair of headphones and a few exercise books inside. He knew it was his drawer and knew its contents well.
Upon realizing that he would move out soon, and this wouldn’t be his drawer anymore, Wei Zhen Ge became momentarily stunned. He got up, pushed open the door, and turned to look into the adjoining bedroom. Jian Yuanbai’s door was open, but there was nobody inside.
Did Jian Yuanbai go to work already?
With these thoughts, Wei Zhen Ge walked into the living room in his soft slippers. There was a pile of stones and a stack of papers on the coffee table.
Wei Zhen Ge couldn’t miss it. He caught sight of an incredibly beautiful emerald embedded inside one of the stones. However, he didn’t pick up the stone, but instead picked up the paper next to it first.
“You don’t have to move out. I’ve left,” the note read.
“I’ve signed over the property to you, and it’s now under your name. I’ll also give you these raw materials that you haven’t finished working on.”
“I’m not good at goodbyes, so-” The handwriting seemed heavier for the word ‘so’, showing whoever wrote it had paused for quite some time. After that, it was clearly written, “Goodbye.”
Wei Zhen Ge carefully folded the paper. As he looked at the transfer agreement and the red property book beneath it, he was puzzled. Not having known Jian Yuanbai for long, he struggled to comprehend why Jian Yuanbai would do so much for him, even giving him an apartment.
Wei Zhen Ge’s curiosity got the better of him. He picked up his phone and opened the messenger app. His last conversation had been with Tong Le Rong, where he expressed gratitude.
W: “Do you know why a person would consistently take care of another, help them significantly, give them expensive gifts, and not ask for anything in return?”
Just as he was about to send the message, Wei Zhen Ge hesitated. He knew that Tong Le Rong liked him, but he had no intention of reciprocating her feelings, which led to him avoiding much interaction with her.
His current predicament made him think differently. Deleting the unsent message in the chat window, he turned to search on the internet instead.
“Can a man like a man?”
Five minutes later, Wei Zhen Ge closed the search page with an odd expression. So, when Jian Yuanbai repeatedly asked him whether he would date early, could it have been… a confession?
It’s not concerned about the early love affecting his grades; instead, does he wish to date him? Wei Zhenge was considering, even though he’s never been in a relationship, he thinks of himself as someone who’s attracted to women, but he couldn’t accept this house that’s so inexplicably precious.
Wei Zhenge tried to call Jian Yuanbai, but was greeted by a disconnected tone. The message he sent him had a red exclamation mark. His face sank slightly. After telling his professors he’d be absent that morning, he quickly changed clothes and hurried to Jian Yuanbai’s company.
“Are you saying Jian Yuanbai left you in charge of the company temporarily?” Wei Zhenge couldn’t believe it, sitting in the client reception area, looking at the middle-aged man across from him.
The man nodded, “Yes, I also don’t know where President Jian is right now, but…” He sighed, looking at the anxious young man, “President Jian probably isn’t coming back. There’s no need for you to waste time looking for him.”
He naturally understood that the noble youth before him would be his boss in the future, but according to President Jian’s instructions, he wouldn’t inform the youth until after he graduated from college.
After all, the recently adult young man, whose mind hasn’t matured enough to manage a company, doesn’t have that much time.
President Jian saved him from misery, and he was naturally going to give back, managing the company with all his heart and effort. Of course, not just for Jian Yuanbai, but also for his own salary and bonuses.
Meanwhile, in the café across the street from the company, Jian Yuanbai was sitting on the second floor talking to the system, “He came to find me at the company. He still cares about me.”
The system’s cold, stinging remark came back, “Anybody would be concerned if someone completely disappeared.”
“We’re pretty much done, right? We can leave this world now.”
Jian Yuanbai tactfully evaded the question, “Do you think Xiao Zhen would walk out of the company gateway with a face full of disappointment?”
The system sneered. Coincidentally, at this moment, Wei Zhenge walked out of the company. Seeing Wei Zhenge calmly coming out, the system responded, “Yes, he really seems disappointed.”
Jian Yuanbai squinted stubbornly, “He’s putting on an act.”
Wei Zhenge had just returned to the neighborhood when Jian Yuanbai took up residence in the higher building across the street, setting up his telescope on the balcony.
The system couldn’t take it anymore, “You do realize your behavior is quite vile, right?”
Jian Yuanbai sighed deeply, “You don’t understand. When your child is traveling a thousand miles, the parent worries.”
“Xiao Zhen is about to live alone; can’t I take a look at whether he can cope?”
The system was speechless, “Mother Jian, if you genuinely care, why won’t you stay around?”
“Good boy,” Jian Yuanbai said, “I think our relationship isn’t quite mother-son. If push comes to shove, you can call me Dad.”
No one was around when, abruptly, the system popped up, slamming into Jian Yuanbai’s head. The golden cat-like figure lay on his head, ambiguously indicating, “I’ve told you before, you can stay here for another year.”
“There’s no difference between leaving now and leaving a year from now. My job here is done, and he doesn’t need me anymore.”
“Wei Zhen has turned eighteen, has a home, and considerable resources. There are fewer and fewer ways for the Wei family to control him. He even has private tutoring now, which allows him to take the college entrance exam without going to school. Unless he himself chooses not to study, this year cannot significantly impact him.”
The golden cat-like figure, with its brightly shimmering eyes, looked towards the building where Wei Zhen was. “It’s different,” it said, “He’ll be lonely.”
Jian Yuanbai had done far too much, far beyond the actions required for his role in the mission. His departure wouldn’t feel like getting rid of a bother, as portrayed in the drama. It would, however, make Wei Zhen grieve.
Not to mention, he would leave without a word.
The system’s voice was barely audible and obscure, to which Jian Yuanbai asked, “What did you say?”
Because neither the cat atop his head nor the voice in his head responded, a silence prevailed.
Jian Yuanbai followed Wei Zhen for six days; the seventh day had come.
Slighted by practice, Wei Zhen would usually leave the house at noon. He would buy food for the day, and at 9 p.m., he would go for a night run while listening to audios, either educational or music, through his headphones.
Jian Yuanbai never knew about Wei Zhen’s habit of night running, or his preference for blueberries. Often, Wei Zhen would bring home fresh blueberries; sometimes, he would go out to buy breakfast but never doughnuts, which Jian Yuanbai usually bought him.
Actually, Jian Yuanbai didn’t see much since Wei Zhen spent most of his time at home studying or doing homework. With the curtains drawn, not much could be seen with a telescope.
Moreover, Jian Yuanbai felt perverse watching Xia Zhentou through the telescope, so he rarely used it.
At 9 p.m., Wei Zhen put on a blue sweatshirt and showed up downstairs promptly, put on his headphones, and started his night run. The property was pricey and spacious with plenty of greenery, which provided ample space for running within the compound.
As Jian Yuanbai watched him from upstairs, he finally said to the system, “We’re ready to go, Tian Tian.”
Jian Yuanbai’s ‘Xiao Zhentou’ was living well on his own, he had a regular and healthy lifestyle, was emotionally stable, and could take care of himself. He even cooked for himself every day.
There was no reason for Jian Yuanbai to stay here.
His digital confidant didn’t respond, and Wei Zhen finished his night run and stood outside his apartment for quite a while but never went in.
Jian Yuanbai peered through a telescope, desiring a final glimpse of Wei Zhen, only to see his little Zhen tilting back his head, seemingly looking up at Jian Yuanbai’s former bedroom. A tear, just about to fall from the corner of Wei’s eye, was wiped away by Wei’s swift hand.
He lowered his head and entered the building.
……
The first time Jian Yuanbai had seen Wei Zhen cry was in a hospital bed. Wei, burning with fever, had his eyes closed while tears silently streamed from the corners of his eyes as if he were a small animal whimpering after a heavy downpour.
At that moment, Jian Yuanbai had wanted to shelter him from the storm.
This was the second time he saw Wei Zhen crying. After a night run, Wei, his forehead slightly sweaty, looked up towards the window of the room he once lived in. His beautiful face was calm as he reached up to wipe away the tear about to fall from his eye corner.
In a moment of realization, Jian Yuanbai suddenly thought that Wei seldom showed his vulnerability. Even when his family had left him with strangers, he remained calm. He had only ever cried unconsciously when he was in a coma, and this time, he had wiped away his tears before they could fully form.
“Ding dong.”
The doorbell rang. Wei, puzzled as to who would knock at such a late hour, opened the door while contemplating.
Jian Yuanbai stood at the door, looking at him somewhat nervously, “I have a question for you.”
“Yes,” Wei replied before Jian could finish, “I think I might be in love.”
“That’s great!”
Jian Yuanbai couldn’t help but beam suddenly, thrilled that he no longer needed to find more reasons to return.
Wei’s heartbeat quickened. Did he like him that much? Just because he might agree to him, Jian could be so happy.
Realizing his role, Jian Yuanbai pretended to be serious, clearing his throat twice, “What I meant was, as your former guardian, I can’t stand by and watch your final year of high school being affected by premature love.”
“No matter what, I have to see you through to the end of the university entrance exam.”
“So, during this period, could we live together? Can we share a life you think is possible?”
Wei’s eyes reflected confusion as he blinked, “Sure.”
Feigning sternness, Jian Yuanbai declared: “Don’t worry, I’ll strictly supervise you and nip any signs of premature love in the bud.”
Wei stared deeply into his eyes, “Thank you.”
