- Chapter 11 - Great Tang emissary, Turkic dignitary, resurrection technique
After Qu Wentai regained consciousness, he retreated to the palace for recovery and ordered Zhang Xiong to escort Xuanzang, Wang Xuance, and others away.
Zhang Xiong was a prominent Han loyalist in Gaochang and naturally warmed up to Wang Xuanze, deliberately forging a bond: “Esteemed envoy, would you like to stay at the inn?”
Wang Xuanze waved his hand dismissively, saying, “Thank you, but I did not bring an official letter this time and dare not violate the laws of the Tang Dynasty. General, please release those refugees as soon as possible. When I return from the Western Turks, I will take them back with me.”
Zhang Xiong nodded, apologized to the two, and hurried off to the execution ground.
Once Zhang Xiong was out of earshot, Xuanzang bowed deeply to Wang Xuanze: “Thank you so much for your assistance this time, which saved the lives of sixty or seventy people. I am deeply grateful.”
Wang Xuanze hurriedly helped him up, saying, “Please, no need for such formalities! You are a revered monk in His Majesty’s eyes. How can I accept such gratitude?”
The two left the palace chatting and entered the bustling streets, while Ashu, with a heart full of worries, followed behind, bored and idle. Xuanzang, curious, asked, “Sir Wang, since you are an envoy, why did you come alone without even an attendant?”
Wang Xuanze smiled and replied, “Master, please come to my humble abode. I have excellent Tang tea there.”
Xuanzang was delighted. Both were of similar age. Wang Xuanze, despite his rugged appearance indicating years of travel, exuded an aura of refinement and approachability.
“Really? Then this monk must taste it,” Xuanzang said happily. “Since leaving Guazhou, I have not tasted tea from my homeland.”
“Master,” Ashu couldn’t hold back, “I want to go out for a walk.”
“Oh?” Xuanzang was surprised. “Where do you want to go?”
Ashu replied gloomily, “To the Zoroastrian temple. I want to see if there are any fellow Samarqandians there and ask them to take my uncle’s remains back.”
Xuanzang was moved by the boy’s filial piety and respectfully said, “Ashu, would you like this monk to accompany you?”
“No need, no need,” Ashu replied. “Master, you are a foreigner, and there are many inconveniences inside the Zoroastrian temple.”
Xuanzang knew the rules of Zoroastrianism were strict and didn’t insist further, reminding him, “Before nightfall, make sure to return to the palace, understand? You’re just a child; don’t wander around.”
Ashu was touched and grinned, “Master, I’ve traveled over ten thousand miles.”
“Even after walking so far, you’re still a child,” Xuanzang said with a stern face for the first time.
“Alright, alright!” Ashu quickly relented. “I’ll follow Master’s instructions.”
With that, he bowed slightly to Wang Xuanze and disappeared into the crowd. Being short in stature, he vanished in no time.
Wang Xuanze chuckled, “Master, this child is quite amusing.”
Xuanzang sighed and recounted the encounter with Ashu. Wang Xuanze’s expression turned peculiar upon hearing about the King David’s Jar incident: “A ghost in the Jar? Yazidin actually said that?”
“After all,” Xuanzang sighed, “it appears Yazidin also knew that the demon was sealed within the King David’s Jar. Yet he never imagined that the loss of this bottle would stir up such turmoil in the Western Regions.”
As they conversed, they arrived at the residence where Wang Xuance stayed. It was a secluded courtyard in the eastern part of the city, quite spacious with four or five horse-drawn carriages parked inside, alongside mule and camel sheds. Surprisingly, there were numerous people in the courtyard, dressed casually yet displaying a fierce and stern demeanor, unmistakably battle-hardened veterans of the desert. Xuanzang couldn’t help but shiver slightly as he carefully observed, noting occasional glimpses of bowstrings on the tarred carriages, and even a heavy crossbow mechanism protruding from one of them!
Seeing Wang Xuance enter, everyone stopped what they were doing and bowed respectfully, “Greetings, sir!”
Wang Xuance waved casually and invited Xuanzang into the house. It was a simple adobe structure, crude and rudimentary, with scrolls scattered haphazardly on the floor. Inside were also four or five Han Chinese, gathered around a wooden board, drawing maps!
Xuanzang was intrigued but refrained from asking further.
One of the elders among them bowed respectfully upon seeing Wang Xuance, “Sir, you’ve returned?”
“I have,” Wang Xuance replied indifferently. “What is the latest situation?”
The elder reported, “Sir, it has been confirmed that outside Jiaohe City, the three nations of Yanqi, Kucha, and Shule have a combined force of eight thousand troops. Two days ago, a noble from the Western Turks secretly entered the Dragon Cavalry’s camp, but his identity has yet to be verified.”
Wang Xuance frowned thoughtfully, “Is there anything else?”
The elder handed over a scroll, “Sir, we have completed the detailed investigation of the six ministries of Gaochang. The ministries of personnel, civilians, treasury, granary, rites, and military have all been categorized and compiled into volumes. We have specifically compiled separate volumes on the number of troops, equipment, provisions, and horses of the Gaochang military, including personal intelligence on the Five Military Commanders. Would you like to take a look?”
“I won’t. Proceed with the map-making,” Wang Xuance waved his hand dismissively to the elder.
“Come, Master, please,” Wang Xuance invited Xuanzang to sit on the woolen felt, where there was tea, a stove, and water. He personally boiled water and brewed tea, “This is the Guzhu Purple Bamboo Shoot tea from Huzhou this spring, with a rich aroma, truly a top-grade tea.”
Xuanzang lifted the tea bowl, took a sip, and exclaimed, “I never expected to taste hometown tea in a foreign land.”
Wang Xuance chuckled, “I have even better tea, but that was a gift from His Majesty to Khan Tegin. Would the Master like to taste it? Once you’ve tasted it, we can change it with something else. Surely Khan Tegin won’t notice.”
Xuanzang was taken aback. This Tang envoy was daring indeed, considering swapping tribute items just for a cup of tea. He smiled politely, “This humble monk dares not tamper with tribute items.”
Wang Xuance looked regretful, “I was hoping to use your presence to shield myself. Anyway, since your journey westward this time may not allow you to return to Tang, His Majesty will likely feel more sorrow than anger…”
Xuanzang wondered, “Sir, how did you know that I might not return to Tang this time?”
“The winds of the Western Regions are about to change drastically. Soon, the country will face upheaval and chaos,” Wang Xuance stared at Xuanzang, “In such circumstances, can the Master safely travel westward?”
Xuanzang remained silent, gently fingering the Buddhist beads around his neck and calmly replied, “If my conjecture is correct, Sir Wang must be burdened with an extremely heavy mission on his mission to the Western Turks—collecting intelligence from various countries along the way and making maps is likely just one part of it.”
“Indeed,” Wang Xuance admitted openly, “You are a distinguished monk of the Tang Dynasty, there’s no need for me to conceal anything. Currently, our Tang cavalry is engaged in fierce battles with the Eastern Turks on the great plains, achieving successive victories. However, His Majesty is concerned about the attitude of the Western Turks. This mission was originally intended for me to travel lightly, covertly observe the movements of various nations, and attempt to sow discord between the Eastern and Western Turks. By revealing my actions to save these refugees from Sui, I have inadvertently exposed our intentions, and I do not yet know how His Majesty will react to this!”
Xuanzang hurriedly apologized, “It’s my recklessness that has led you into this predicament.”
“Please, Master, no need for excessive courtesy,” Wang Xuance sighed, “You are compassionate and concerned for the welfare of the Tang people. As a loyal subject of the Tang Dynasty, how could I stand idly by? Since the turmoil at the end of the Sui Dynasty, the border people of the Tang Dynasty have repeatedly suffered insults from these foreign tribes. Although our strength was insufficient in the past, now that the Tang Dynasty dominates the world and our iron cavalry shakes the four corners of the earth, how can we allow our people to continue suffering? Even if they commit crimes in foreign lands, only the Tang Dynasty has the authority to judge them. Even if they are kings of their own countries, they cannot dictate!”
Xuanzang nodded in agreement. Since the third year of Zhenguan, the Tang Dynasty had grown stronger day by day, and the days of humiliation had long since passed. Even if some small countries caused trouble on the borders, the Tang Dynasty paid little heed, having accumulated sufficient strength. The hundred thousand iron riders directly attacked one of the most powerful empires in the world — the Eastern Turks. This had caused the surrounding small countries to tremble and remain silent.
“However, Master!” Wang Xuance continued, “As powerful as the Tang Dynasty may be, there are still places where our power is limited. Especially in the Western Regions, our strength is weak. If something were to happen to you, I fear that rescue would not arrive in time. Master, please heed my advice. At this time, Gaochang is a source of trouble. There may be major upheavals soon. I fear you should not linger here but depart swiftly to the west!”
Xuanzang nodded gratefully, “Sir Wang, there’s something I don’t understand. General Qu Wentai has just pacified the rebellion. Although there are three great armies outside Jiaohe City, it is a strategically defensible position. Even when the Xiongnu controlled tens of thousands of bows, they were unable to break through it. I find it hard to believe that the eight thousand soldiers of the Dragon Cavalry could pose a significant threat to Jiaohe. Why do you feel that Gaochang is on the verge of collapse?”
Wang Xuance smiled and furrowed his brow in contemplation, “Master, when you entered earlier, you must have seen my entourage? I won’t hide it from you. These are elite members of the Longxiang Guards I brought from Chang’an, totaling over a hundred people, all armored, carrying heavy crossbows and longbows. With these forces, I am practically invincible in these ten thousand miles of the Western Regions. Against some small countries, I could even annihilate them in a single battle! However, the internal situation in Gaochang is far more complex than you can imagine. The rebellion led by Qu Deyong is just the tip of the iceberg. The dangers involved are so great that even I am deeply alarmed and dare not make the slightest mistake.”
Xuanzang pondered, “Sir Wang, are you referring to the Yarkand people plotting against Gaochang?”
Wang Xuance shook his head, “That war? Ha, it’s nothing more than a struggle for control of the Silk Road. The combined forces of the three countries don’t concern me.”
Xuanzang was puzzled, “Then what are you worried about?”
Wang Xuance said solemnly, “King David’s Jar!”
Xuanzang was stunned, “King David’s Jar?”
“Yes,” Wang Xuance confirmed.
Xuanzang was perplexed, “Isn’t King David’s Ja a scheme by Princess Long Shuangyue of Yarkand? Although it’s terrifying, I still haven’t figured out how it managed to massacre those over a hundred people. There must be flaws in this plan. Why do you attach so much importance to it?”
Wang Xuance looked puzzled, “King David’s Jar is Princess Long Shuangyue scheme? Are you talking about Princess Long Shuangyue of Longxiang?”
“That’s her,” Xuanzang nodded.
“Is that possible?” Wang Xuance smiled, “The King David’s Jar comes from Sassanid Persia, and its secrets are far more complex than you imagine. The Yarkand Princess you mentioned, at most, used the Jar. But to say she created it is impossible. Because the demonic Jar arrived in the Western Regions just a month ago, yet our Tang Dynasty has been vigilant about this Jar for over a year.”
Xuanzang was surprised, “Over a year ago? Sir, what is going on?”
“I can’t disclose the specifics to you. In short, our Tang court has been deeply concerned about this King David’s Jar.” Wang Xuance sighed, “Master, please heed my advice and leave early. You are someone His Majesty worries about. If anything happens to you, I can’t bear that responsibility.”
“Amitabha.” Xuanzang bowed gratefully to Wang Xuance, “Thank you for your concern. Previously, King Qutayba tasked me with unraveling the truth about this King David’s Jar. I cannot abandon this task halfway. If the Jar is indeed the source of turmoil in Karashahr, then I must suppress this evil to ensure peace for all nations.”
Wang Xuance sighed helplessly, “Master, what I’ve said is not exaggerated. If you don’t believe me, why not accompany me outside the city to see for yourself?”
“Go outside the city to see what?” Xuanzang asked, puzzled.
“The storms in the Western Regions have already begun. Master, why not witness it with your own eyes!” Wang Xuance chuckled.
Xuanzang had been interacting with Wang Xuance for several days, hoping to learn more about the internal affairs, but Wang Xuance remained silent, leaving Xuanzang no choice.
On this day, the two men left Wang Xuance’s residence. The sky was dimming with the setting sun, and due to the cold weather, the merchants had dispersed early, packing up their stalls in the bustling market. However, outside the city gate, there were many caravans from afar rushing to enter the city before dusk, causing a crowd at the gate.
Karashahr Royal City was one of the trading centers in the Western Regions, treating merchants exceptionally well. Usually, only tax officials from the Ministry of Revenue guarded the city gate to collect entrance taxes. Today, for some reason, there were many palace guards stationed outside the city, and craftsmen were decorating the city gate with silk, driving away the merchants to the sides of the road.
Curious, Xuanzang asked Wang Xuance, who just smiled without answering. Xuanzang had to ask a merchant for information. As soon as he saw a monk, the merchant respectfully said, “Master, today Mokhoq has arrived from the Western Turks to mediate the war between Karashahr and the three nations of Yarkand, Kucha, and Shule. Therefore, the King of Karashahr personally went out of the city to welcome him.”
“Mokhoq? Who is he?” Xuanzang asked in surprise.
Wang Xuance smiled, “Mokhoq is the uncle of Tegin Bögü, second in status to Tegin Bögü among the Western Turks.”
“This young man is truly knowledgeable!” the merchant praised, then informed Xuanzang, “Mokhoq is said to be greedy by nature. This time, taking advantage of the tense war situation, he has come to Karashahr, likely to extort a large sum from the King of Karashahr. But if he can truly make the three nations cease hostilities, restoring peace along the Silk Road, it would be good news for us merchants.”
Xuanzang understood and asked Wang Xuance, “Sir, did you bring me here to meet this person?”
“Exactly.” Wang Xuance nodded.
“Could it be that the Western Regions’ turmoil you mentioned is related to this person?” Xuanzang pondered.
Wang Xuance burst into laughter, “Master, you truly are insightful. How could Karashahr alone have the ability to cause turmoil in the Western Regions!”
Just as they were speaking, the sound of horns rang out at the city gate. Qu Wentai, accompanied by the officials of Karashahr, had arrived at the gate. This gathering was much larger than when they welcomed Xuanzang; there were probably no fewer than a thousand people, including hundreds of monks. From afar, Xuanzang saw that Qu Wentai’s health had not yet recovered. He was half-lying on a palanquin carried by four sturdy guards, covered in thick fur. Qu Wentai himself was also wrapped in fur, almost indistinguishable.
At this moment, Mohoq had not yet arrived. Temporary tents had been set up at the city gate, where Qu Wentai and a group of ministers were resting.
On the main road, fast horses occasionally galloped by, reporting on Mohoq’s progress. Qu Wentai had almost timed his arrival to coincide with Mohoq’s, so within half an hour, they saw billowing smoke and dust rising from the direction of the Flaming Mountains to the north. A large group of riders and horses were swiftly heading towards the royal city. Upon hearing the news, Qu Wentai hurriedly had himself carried out of the tent, waiting respectfully outside the city gate.
In just a moment, the earth trembled under the thunderous hooves. No one knew how many men and horses Mohoq had brought, but the ground shook, the iron hooves thundered, and everyone’s ears went numb. Despite shouting loudly, no sound could be heard! While others were not deeply affected despite the vibration, Xuanzang looked into the distance and saw Qu Wentai struggling to sit up and look into the distance, his face even paler, appearing quite anxious. Xuanzang understood that political figures like Mohoq always had deep intentions behind every move. Now that Mohoq displayed such power, it seemed that trouble was imminent!
The cavalry moved extremely fast, and in the blink of an eye, a black torrent swept towards them. Qu Wentai’s expression grew grave, standing with an unusual expression.
Beside him, Wang Xuance murmured, “They’re the (Auxiliary) Wolf Soldiers!”
Curious, Xuanzang asked, “Sir, what are the (Auxiliary) Wolf Soldiers?”
“Master,” Wang Xuance explained, “In Turkic, ‘Auxiliary’ means ‘wolf,’ the elite guard of the Turkic Khan.”
Looking closer, Xuanzang saw they were all equipped with sabers, spears, daggers, and bows and arrows. The selected Turkic horses were robust and proportionally well-built.
As they drew near, a horn sounded within the ranks. One Turkic nobleman, carrying a curved blade, slowly rode out from the midst of the troops. Xuanzang glanced at him and surmised he must be Mohoq: over fifty years old, with rugged features and narrow eyes, adorned in luxurious robes embellished with gold and pearls.
Unable to descend from his palanquin, Qu Wentai urged his guards to carry him forward to bow before Mohoq. The other officials of Karashahr also knelt in greeting. Mohoq didn’t mind and laughed heartily, seemingly consoling Qu Wentai with a few words. After chatting briefly, though Xuanzang was too far to hear clearly, he saw Qu Wentai wearing a forced smile, appearing extremely respectful. Mohoq gestured proudly toward the cavalry behind him, and Qu Wentai’s face briefly showed a mix of embarrassment and anger before he concealed it, gazing enviously at the cavalry.
The welcoming ceremony then commenced. Monks chanted sutras to bless Mohoq. While most Turkic people practiced Shamanism, their beliefs were diverse, including Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, and Nestorian Christianity. Mohoq bowed respectfully to receive the blessings.
Xuanzang and Wang Xuance mingled in the crowd, waiting by the roadside until Qu Wentai accompanied Mohoq into the city. Only then did the guards at the city gate withdraw, and merchants began to enter the city one after another.
As Xuanzang gazed at the departing Auxiliary Wolf Soldiers, he suddenly sighed, “The calamity of Karashahr has finally arrived.”
“Does the Master understand now?” Wang Xuance looked at him.
Xuanzang nodded, “At this juncture, with Mohe Duo arriving in Gaochang, everyone assumes he’s here to mediate the war between the three countries. But his true intentions are likely different. Why else bring thousands of elite cavalry if it’s merely mediation of others’ disputes?” Xuanzang sighed wryly, “This is clearly a show of force. Given Mohe Duo’s stature, he wouldn’t resort to military pressure unless he seeks something significant. I wonder how Qu Wentai will handle this.”
“The master must know what Mohe Duo aims to achieve,” Wang Xuance nodded in agreement.
“Yes, harboring such a valuable item, at this moment in Gaochang, what can move Mohe Duo is none other than the King Davids’ Jar!” Xuanzang asserted.
“You speak wisely,” Wang Xuanqi praised, “What I’ve mentioned about the Western Regions’ turmoil revolves around this very issue. The King Davids’ Jar is an irresistible temptation to everyone. When Mohe Duo arrives, the Silk Road will cease to be peaceful, and the entire Western Regions will descend into bloodshed and chaos. This is my concern.”
“Sir,” Xuanzang reflected for a moment, “Qu Wentai has already shown inclinations toward relying on the Tang Dynasty. If you were to intervene now to help him resolve this crisis of national destruction, he would undoubtedly be deeply grateful to the Tang.”
“The Eastern Turks are not yet defeated, and the Tang Dynasty will not interfere in the Western Regions,” Wang Xuanqi stated with seriousness, “This is the national policy set by the Emperor. As a courtier, I dare not go against it. Master, today I have already violated the law by going to see Qu Wentai to save those fleeing. I have a more important mission ahead. From tomorrow onwards, I will leave Gaochang and head to the court of the Western Turkic Khaganate.”
Xuanzang felt somewhat disappointed but understood that Wang Xuanqi was bound by his mission and had no choice. He could only nod resignedly.
By now, it was late in the day. After chatting for a few more moments, they went their separate ways.
Xuanzang returned to the royal palace. The guards at the gate recognized him and respectfully escorted him inside. Unexpectedly, as soon as he entered the palace gate, a eunuch approached him furtively. The eunuch seemed nervous, glancing around before calming down upon seeing no one nearby.
Xuanzang looked at him in surprise.
“Master, my mistress wishes to see you,” the old eunuch whispered.
“Who is your mistress?” Xuanzang asked curiously.
The eunuch replied softly, “It’s the Queen.”
Xuanzang was taken aback. Since the failed coup with Qu Deyong, the Queen had been imprisoned by Qu Wentai. Xuanzang had been concerned about her but refrained from inquiring. He had not expected the Queen to send a eunuch to summon him today.
“Where is the Queen?” Xuanzang inquired.
The eunuch sighed, “In recent days, His Majesty has confined the Queen to her original palace chambers, heavily guarded. Despite her repeated requests to see you, it has not been convenient. Today, His Majesty is in the inner court accompanying Mohe Duo, which finally allowed me to invite you for a meeting.”
Xuanzang pondered for a moment and nodded, “Alright.”
Following the old eunuch, Xuanzang headed towards the back palace. As the old eunuch had indicated, with Qu Wentai gravely ill and Mohe Duo’s arrival with an army, the palace was filled with tension. It appeared deserted, though they encountered a few palace servants on the way. Recognizing Xuanzang as Qu Wentai’s most respected guest, they greeted him deferentially, refraining from asking any questions.
Xuanzang had visited the Queen’s chambers once before. Although he had entered through a hidden door in the aqueduct that day, he had still felt the grandeur and majesty of the palace. However, today, upon seeing it again, Xuanzang couldn’t help but be stunned. The doors and windows on all sides of the palace had been sealed with thick clay, leaving only a small window on the side, likely for food to be delivered inside. Four guards stood watch at the door, and it seemed they had already been bribed. They didn’t say anything upon seeing Xuanzang approaching, but their expressions were even more vigilant.
Xuanzang’s mood grew heavy. Glancing around, he asked, “Where should I enter?”
The old eunuch gestured, and quietly, the four guards brought over a ladder from another courtyard. They leaned it against the courtyard wall. Leading Xuanzang up the ladder, the old eunuch guided him along the wall to the second floor of the palace, stopping at a concealed air vent. This vent, too, was sealed with clay, but it had clearly been tampered with, the clay moveable. Removing a piece of clay revealed an opening.
“Master, you can enter here and reach the second floor of the palace,” the old eunuch said.
Xuanzang nodded. He squeezed through the opening and immediately felt the darkness and chill inside the grand hall. It was empty, devoid of even a single maid. It felt like a tomb abandoned for centuries, exuding a thick aura of death. Xuanzang couldn’t help but wonder: if the escape route and guards were already arranged, why did the Queen refuse to flee and instead choose solitary confinement in this cold and desolate hall?
The second floor was equally deserted. Xuanzang descended the stairs and saw the Queen seated in the center of the grand hall, adorned in her formal attire, her gown trailing gracefully like a blooming lotus.
But this Queen, compared to when Xuanzang had first met her, was no longer the dignified mother of a nation. Nor was she the mysterious woman who had boldly wielded a hammer during the coup at the Chang’an tavern. In just a few days, her face had aged and withered, scars now healed into black marks that nearly split her visage in two. Her once-dark hair had turned grey, as if she had aged thirty years overnight. She still wore the same luxurious robes from the day of the coup, stained with blood and in tatters, with holes exposing her skin to the freezing air.
Seeing Xuanzang arrive, the Queen spoke softly, “Master, please sit.”
Xuanzang sat cross-legged on a felt mat opposite her. The Queen continued, “In my current situation, Master’s willingness to visit me without suspicion shows your compassion.”
Xuanzang silently regarded her, his heart heavy. “In the eyes of Buddhism, guilt or innocence is not judged by worldly standards.”
“I would rather be judged by the world, let Qu Wentai execute me slowly, than enter the muddy hell and seek redemption in the next life. Do you know why?” The Queen smiled self-deprecatingly, “Because in this world, I have nothing left to hold on to. But in the underworld, in the next life, De Yong is still waiting for me.”
Xuanzang sighed, “Princess, all the calamities in the world, the fears and suffering of all beings, arise from attachment. Your steadfast resolve spans countless lifetimes, still mistaking the unreal for the real, unaware that the ‘I’ is false, unaware that love is empty and unreal. Princess, let go!”
A faint smile graced the Queen’s face, “Let go, and where shall I go?”
Before Xuanzang could respond, the Queen continued, “In this life, my parents abandoned me to the Emperor, the Emperor abandoned me to the King of Gaochang, and the King of Gaochang abandoned me to the Turkic noble. Now, my family is shattered, my homeland lost, the love between husband and wife dead, my youth and beauty withered away. Master, in this lonely palace, the only companions I have are the wind, the cold, the darkness, and the unyielding spirit of De Yong. If I let go, what have I truly possessed in this lifetime?”
“Princess, why must you insist on possessing?” Xuanzang whispered softly.
“Because,” the Queen replied desolately, “holding it in my hands brings me satisfaction. In the judgment and punishment of the muddy hell, I will not fear or be alone.”
Xuanzang truly didn’t know how to console her. Clearly, the woman before him had completely withered, leaving only a flickering flame. Xuanzang couldn’t bear to extinguish her final attachment. The cycle of existence never ends; perhaps some attachments need to be carried into the next cycle for deeper understanding.
“Princess, in summoning me here today, is there something you wish to entrust to me?” Xuanzang asked.
The Queen nodded. “There is one thing I ask of you, Master.”
“Please, Princess, speak,” Xuanzang said.
“I wish to be buried with De Yong!” The Queen stared at him, each word deliberate.
Xuanzang’s eyes widened in astonishment. The Queen wanted to be buried with Qu Deyong? Not only was this considered the gravest taboo in Confucian concepts in the Central Plains, but it was also inconceivable in both non-Buddhist Turkic beliefs and the faiths of the Western Regions.
“De Yong’s body has not been buried yet. It remains in the palace temple, with monks chanting scriptures daily, awaiting burial after seven days,” the Queen continued, disregarding Xuanzang’s reaction, “What I wish to ask of you is to sneak De Yong’s body out. When the time comes, I will choose to end my own life. North of the Flaming Mountain, in the canyons of the Tianshan Mountains, there lies a massive flaming furnace. I ask that you toss both our bodies into that furnace to turn them into ashes.”
“Amitabha,” Xuanzang hurriedly interjected, “Princess, how can I possibly do such a thing?”
“Master, you are the only person I can entrust this to,” the Queen said sadly, “Among all people in this world, only you, Master, come without any personal motives, without ties of gratitude or enmity, only to save all sentient beings. De Yong and I beseech you, please accompany us on our final journey in this mortal realm!”
“No, no, no,” Xuanzang firmly refused, “Princess, it’s not that I am unwilling to help you. Stealing a body, desecrating a corpse, these are grave sins that I cannot bear.”
“Master, you need not do it personally,” the Queen said, “There will be others who will assist you.”
“Even so,” Xuanzang shook his head, “Although I am a monk, I am bound by earthly laws and cannot dare to commit such acts.”
The Queen smiled faintly, “Master, the first time you crossed the borders of Yizhou and traveled the world; the second time you crossed the borders of Guazhou and came to the Western Regions. Have you not violated the laws of the Tang Dynasty each time?”
Xuanzang was taken aback, speechless. The Queen continued, “If you agree, I have a great secret to share with you in exchange.”
“A great secret?” Xuanzang was surprised, “Is it related to me?”
“Of course it is,” the Queen nodded, “It concerns those around you, and even your life and death.”
Xuanzang pondered for a moment but still shook his head, “My life and death are not such important matters.”
“In that case, is the life and death of Ashu not important?” the Queen asked.
Xuanzang was greatly surprised, staring at the Queen with disbelief. The Queen sighed, “Master, if you find it too difficult, could you at least accompany us when we take De Yong’s body out? If you could recite a few verses of the Amitabha Sutra, I would be deeply grateful for your kindness.”
Xuanzang silently nodded. The Queen took out a thin piece of paper from her sleeve and handed it to him, saying, “That secret is written clearly here. Master, after reading it, you may decide for yourself.”
Taking the paper, Xuanzang found that while there weren’t many words, they stirred up a storm in his heart. Despite his unshakeable composure, his face couldn’t help but pale in shock. Yet, he said nothing and quickly regained his calm, carefully folding the paper and putting it away.
“Master, your composure is admirable,” praised the Queen. “When I first learned of it, I was equally shocked. Such supernatural methods, they are beyond anything of this world.”
Xuanzang sighed quietly, “Princess, if there’s nothing else, I will take my leave now.”
“As the sun sets, this hall will become a tomb. Dark, silent, and polluted—Master, you need not be tainted,” the Queen gazed out towards the window where food was delivered, speaking softly, “I’ve said what needs to be said. What you choose to do next is up to you. With your heavy responsibilities and for your safety, it’s best you depart for the west as soon as possible.”
Xuanzang remained silent, stood up, and said, “Princess, would you like me to persuade His Majesty to send some charcoal over?”
“No!” the Queen sharply replied, “In this life, I never want to hear that name again! If it weren’t for waiting to be buried with De Yong, why would I linger here? Master, I’ve told you that great secret. I implore you not to forget. The day you bring De Yong’s body here will be the day I take my own life!”
“I understand,” Xuanzang said bitterly.
Leaving the Queen’s palace, Xuanzang headed towards his own residence. Unexpectedly, after wandering in circles, he got lost.
Although the King of Gaochang’s palace was not large, its layout was disorderly, unlike Central Plains architecture with its axial lines and layered houses interspersed with corridors. Xuanzang wandered around and ended up in an unfamiliar place.
Just as he was about to ask a palace attendant for directions, he suddenly saw ahead a towering pagoda. Unlike the ordinary residences, this building was splendid with golden hues—it was a Buddhist temple. Xuanzang suddenly realized; he had known there was a Buddhist temple in the palace. Initially, he had wanted to come to pay his respects, but later learned it was the ancestral temple of the Qu family and had given up on the idea. Unexpectedly, today he had ended up here.
Xuanzang was profoundly devout; wherever he encountered a temple, he would pay his respects. Moreover, considering what the Queen had said—De Yong’s body was still lying in the temple. Even though the idea of stealing a corpse for a joint burial was absurd, Xuanzang couldn’t help but feel guilty. He thought to himself, perhaps reciting the Amitabha Sutra a few times would ease his conscience.
Pondering this, Xuanzang entered the temple. As soon as he stepped inside, he felt a strange atmosphere—the temple was surprisingly empty, devoid of any monks. Qu Wentai regularly supported monks from Gaochang in the temple, so where had they all gone?
Xuanzang walked into the main hall. By now, the sun had set, casting a dim yellow light inside. A few candles flickered in the drafty night air, dimly illuminating a coffin placed in the center of the hall. Xuanzang’s heart skipped a beat; surely this was De Yong’s coffin?
Hastening his steps, Xuanzang was taken aback to find people inside the hall. Both were facing away from him—one stood silently aside, while the other knelt on a cushion in front of the coffin, burning incense before the Buddha. They were deeply absorbed in reciting scriptures, specifically the Amitabha Sutra, which Xuanzang was very familiar with—a sutra used for delivering the deceased, consisting of fifty-nine words and fifteen sentences, to be recited twenty-one times each day and night to absolve the deceased of four heavy offenses, five deadly sins, and ten kinds of evil deeds.
That person continued to chant, suddenly sobbing bitterly, “De Yong! De Yong! Open your eyes and look, just look! What haven’t I given you? Since the day you were born, I’ve cherished you like a treasure. Not a single day passed without holding you in my arms, without caring for you with all my heart. You resemble me in appearance and temperament. Though not my eldest son, unable to inherit the throne, I would defy ancestors’ laws and the opposition of the court to support you as the King of Gaochang. I entrusted even the military command of my palace to you—this… this is like handing over my own head to you! De Yong, tell me… where did I ever wrong you? How could you conspire with that wench to depose me?”
Xuanzang halted at the doorway, silently watching. That person was none other than Qu Wentai.
Considering the time, the feast with Mohe Duo should have concluded. Qu Wentai, weak and frail from vomiting blood and fainting during the day, was now not in the harem for recovery but weeping before De Yong’s spirit. Xuanzang couldn’t help but feel deeply moved. Although Qu Wentai was cruel to his wife, he was benevolent to the people and cherished his second son. Even though he had planned rebellions and patricide, he couldn’t bear to sever the father-son bond. For a moment, Xuanzang truly didn’t know how to feel about this.
“De Yong, blame me for pushing you into such a rebellious position. I know I was wrong! But since you wanted to be king, why didn’t you tell me plainly? Instead, you were swayed by that wench to revolt? Huh? Were you afraid that speaking up would lead to my reproach? You were wrong, De Yong, you were wrong! Even if I had abdicated the throne to you, so what? I would retire in the palace or practice Buddhism in the temple. So what? De Yong, why were you so foolish?” Qu Wentai continued, sobbing and then coughing violently. Zhu Gui hurriedly stepped forward to support him, gently patting his back.
Xuanzang sighed and walked into the hall, “Your Majesty, please accept my condolences.”
Both turned in surprise and saw Xuanzang. Qu Wentai burst into tears again, “Master, Master, De Yong is dead! De Yong is dead! It was I who drove De Yong to his death—”
Xuanzang hurried forward to support him. As he got closer, he saw Qu Wentai looking haggard, with deep wrinkles. Originally having only a few white hairs, now his whole head seemed to be silvered. From the rebellion to now, just a day had passed, yet he had aged more than ten years.
“Your Majesty,” Xuanzang said, “the deceased has passed. Your father-son relationship has come to an end. De Yong committed such a grave mistake, and if you recite the Amitabha Sutra to absolve his sins, he would surely be grateful.”
Qu Wentai gradually stopped crying, leaning weakly against Xuanzang, murmuring, “Master, I don’t want his gratitude, I just want De Yong to come back to life. With Ren Shu dead and De Yong gone, Zhi Sheng is unfit to be king. Master, after I die, Gaochang will fall apart, and our lineage will end. I… I have failed the eight generations of ancestors!”
This issue was something Xuanzang truly had no solution for. In any country, the disruption of succession meant dreadful calamities. Ambitious contenders from all directions would inevitably rise up, leading to the country’s demise, with corpses scattered all over. Although there was still Qu Zhi Sheng, he had no interest in being king. Everyone knew his temperament. Even if he became king, he wouldn’t be able to sustain the country.
“Your Majesty,” Xuanzang gently advised, “people cannot be brought back to life, but a country still needs to be maintained. You must take care of yourself and ensure the people’s peace. As for De Yong’s affairs after death, I will personally conduct the rites for him. Your father-son relationship has reached its end, and the course of destiny cannot be stopped.”
Qu Wentai bitterly smiled, “I… I am no longer as strong as before. Even if I survive, how many more years can I live? With De Yong gone, I am truly despondent.” He suddenly grabbed Xuanzang’s hand with red eyes, “Master, I can’t accept this… I can’t! You are a great monk of the Tang Dynasty, it’s said there’s a technique to revive the dead. Master, could you please help me find it?”
Xuanzang was stunned. Reviving the dead? Where did such a thing exist? Tales of resurrection in forbidden texts were absurd and unbelievable. Even if it was mentioned in Buddhist scriptures, the notion of bringing someone back from the dead was something Xuanzang didn’t believe in. In his view, Buddhism preached the supreme path, and the cycle of reincarnation was the method within this path. Once someone entered the cycle after death, it meant the end of the tribulations of this life, and they would be reborn in the next life until achieving liberation and reaching the Pure Land.
Xuanzang smiled bitterly, “Your Majesty, you are deluded. The destiny of life has long been predetermined, each life bearing its own trials. Once the second prince has passed away, how could he possibly be revived? Your Majesty, you believe in the righteous path of Buddhism; we must not stray from it.”
Qu Wentai, deeply disappointed, murmured, “How could disciples not understand this reasoning? I just don’t understand why, in this life, I have built so many temples, paid homage to the Three Jewels(1), yet I am subjected to such torment?”
Xuanzang fell silent, disheartened. Suddenly, Zhu Gui interjected, “Your Majesty, perhaps there is a way to bring the second prince back to life.”
Both Xuanzang and Qu Wentai were taken aback. Qu Wentai asked half-doubtfully, “Zhu Gui, do you have a way?”
Zhu Gui replied, “Your Majesty, I personally may not have a way, but there is something that can.”
Xuanzang was startled, “Are you saying—”
“The King David’s Jar?” Qu Wentai was also astonished. The two exchanged glances, and even Xuanzang couldn’t help but feel uneasy.
However, Zhu Gui calmly continued, “Exactly, the King David’s Jar! Your Majesty, whatever is hidden inside the King David’s Jar, be it demon or other, you have witnessed its power firsthand. If it can truly fulfill its claims, what difficulty would there be in reviving the second prince?”
“Yes!” Qu Wentai suddenly became excited, looking at Xuanzang, “Master, this is truly a solution!”
Xuanzang didn’t know what to do. He sighed, “Your Majesty, such a demonic object—”
Qu Wentai waved excitedly, “I don’t care if it’s demonic or not. As long as it can bring De Yong back to life, I am willing to pay any price!”
Xuanzang vaguely sensed that this matter was extraordinary, but he couldn’t decide for a moment. He gazed at Zhu Gui and calmly said, “Lord Supervisor, I presume you’ve considered this suggestion for some time?”
Zhu Gui respectfully replied, “I wouldn’t dare hide anything from Master. I only just thought of it.”
Xuanzang continued, “Lord Supervisor, now that the King David’s Jar is in the hands of the third prince, although there is still one wish unused, how do you plan to retrieve the Jar from him?”
Zhu Gui remained humble, “This old servant wouldn’t dare speak out of turn. It depends on Your Majesty’s method.”
Qu Wentai dismissed, “Master, regardless of the means, the third prince must hand over the King David’s Jar! Bring De Yong back to life!”
Xuanzang said, “Your Majesty, forcibly taking the King David’s Jar may not be feasible, right?”
Qu Wentai paused, “You’re right. Aside from what that scoundrel might do, if he decides to make another wish and release the demon, it would be useless. Master, do you have any good ideas?”
Xuanzang still didn’t want to let Zhu Gui off easily, saying calmly, “It depends on what means Lord Supervisor has.”
Qu Wentai was now excited and confused, “Yes, yes, Zhu Gui, you’ve watched Zhi Sheng grow up since childhood. Do you have any tricks?”
Zhu Gui sighed helplessly, “Your Majesty, this old servant doesn’t have any good ideas in such haste. However, since the third prince claims that the King David’s Jar is to protect Shuang Yue Zhi, could you consider using this as leverage? If the third prince can be convinced to form a beneficial relationship with Shuang Yue Zhi and ensure her safety, he might not depend so much on the King David’s Jar.”
Qu Wentai hesitated, “While this idea is good, regarding Princess Long Shuang…” He chuckled bitterly, “Now, the cavalry of Long Tuqi is just outside our borders. If I allow Zhi Sheng to marry Long Shuang, this old dragon will definitely explode with anger. Both sides will be at each other’s throats! Master Xuanzang, do you have any good ideas?”
Xuanzang remained calm, “I still wish to hear the Chief Steward’s opinion.”
Realizing, “Exactly, Zhu Gui, this idea came from you, so surely you have a plan!”
Zhu Gui glanced deeply at Xuanzang but under the pressure from Qu Wentai, he reluctantly said, “Your Majesty, what the Third Prince seeks is merely a marital alliance. The urgent matter now is resurrecting the Second Prince. If you agree to let the Third Prince and Long Shuang leave Gaochang for Tang, given Tang’s prosperity, they should be able to live safely.”
Qu Wentai caressed Qu Deyong’s coffin, saying, “Although this may provoke Long Tuqi’s fury, if it brings about Deyong’s resurrection, what does a war matter! Zhu Gui, go summon Zhi Sheng.”
“Yes!”
He fixedly looked at Xuanzang before bowing and stepping back.
Qu Wentai, burdened with illness, paced a few steps in the great hall, showing some vacillation, “Master, do you think Zhi Sheng will agree?”
Xuanzang pondered and nodded silently, “He will agree.”
Qu Wentai was taken aback, “Master, why are you so certain?”
“Since the Prime Minister has proposed this idea, it must not be groundless.” Xuanzang smiled, “In your presence, he wouldn’t dare to speak nonsense.”
Qu Wentai’s heart eased slightly and he sighed, “Zhu Gui is the only elder from Zhi Sheng’s maternal line. He understands Zhi Sheng best, so he should heed your advice, Master.”
“But…” Xuanzang sighed, “The real challenge here lies not with the Third Prince, but with Princess Long Shuang. If she refuses to leave, I wonder what the Prime Minister’s plan will be.”
In Xuanzang’s view, Long Shuang Princess would never leave Gaochang. Once she departed, the entire plan would be baseless and futile. However, Zhu Gui was evidently someone with secrets. He proposed this plan for a reason, let’s see how he handles Long Shuang Princess’ wrath!
The two continued chatting for a while. Soon, footsteps were heard, and Zhu Gui hurriedly brought Qu Zhisheng and Long Shuang Princess over. It seemed the two were still unaware of what had transpired. Long Shuang Princess looked suspicious, eyeing Xuanzang with caution.
Upon seeing Qu Wentai standing before his younger brother’s coffin, Qu Zhisheng couldn’t help but pause. He bowed respectfully, “Father King, did you summon me?”
Qu Wentai couldn’t contain his anger when he saw him, though he restrained himself and couldn’t resist mocking, “Third son, it’s truly not easy to see you.”
Qu Zhisheng felt somewhat embarrassed, “I heard that Father King is ill and was just about to visit, but I didn’t expect to find you here.”
“It’s rare that you even remembered Father King is ill,” Qu Wentai sighed, “Third son, I want to discuss a business matter with you. Did Zhu Gui inform you?”
“A business matter?” Qu Zhisheng looked surprised at Zhu Gui and shook his head, “No! He only said you summoned me to the ancestral temple, so I came.”
Qu Wentai nodded, “Third son, Father King intends for you to marry Shuangyue Zhi. What do you think?”
Qu Zhisheng was shocked, “Father King…”
Long Shuangyue Zhi was also surprised but didn’t express any opinion, her expression cold like a beautiful leopard facing an enemy, with a hint of a cold smile, waiting for the opponent to make a move.
At this moment, Qu Zhisheng was already overjoyed, and he knelt down, “Son is grateful for Father King’s great grace. If I can marry Shuangyue Zhi, we will honor Father King and never provoke your anger again.”
“Hehe,” Qu Wentai smiled bitterly at Xuanzang, “This is the magic of women! Master, why do I feel she has even greater supernatural powers than King David’s jar?”
Xuanzang also smiled wryly.
Qu Wentai helped Qu Zhisheng up, and his expression immediately softened a lot. He lightly patted him, “You’re much sturdier. How many years has it been since we, father and son, had such a conversation? I’ve been neglectful in disciplining you these years, and I bear responsibility for that. Third son, do you understand? For me to let you marry Shuangyue Zhi, we’re facing great risks.”
“Risks?” Qu Zhisheng thought for a moment, “Are you afraid that Shuangyue Zhi’s father will oppose?”
Qu Wentai sighed bitterly, “More than opposition. He’s already fought several battles outside Jiaohé City with a large army. If Jiaohé City weren’t so strong, he would probably have besieged it by now. If Father King allows you to marry Shuangyue Zhi, that Longtuqi Zhi will surely go mad. We’ll be facing a war of annihilation in Gaochang.”
Qu Zhisheng was wide-eyed and tongue-tied, looking at him blankly, not knowing what to say.
“Shuangyue Zhi, do you understand?” Qu Wentai asked.
“Mm.” Long Shuangyue Zhi nodded obediently.
“Third son, even so, I will still let you marry Shuangyue Zhi,” Qu Wentai said, “But after your marriage, you cannot stay in Gaochang. I will send people to escort you to the Tang Dynasty. You and Shuangyue Zhi will spend your lives in the bustling world of the Tang Dynasty. Are you willing?”
“Go to the Tang Dynasty…” Both Qu Zhisheng and Long Shuangyue Zhi were stunned. Especially Long Shuangyue Zhi, two cold lights suddenly shot from her eyes, sweeping coldly across Zhu Gui and Xuanzang’s faces. The two pretended not to notice.
“Your Majesty,” Long Shuangyue Zhi suddenly spoke, “I’d like to know, is this suggestion the Master’s idea or the Chief Steward’s idea?”
Qu Wentai was taken aback, “It was Zhu Gui’s idea. Why do you ask?”
Long Shuangyue Zhi smiled, “It’s nothing.”
At this moment, Long Shuangyue Zhi clearly understood that this was an expulsion aimed at herself! She also knew that although she had controlled Zhu Gui through Qu Zhisheng, this old eunuch was obviously unwilling and finally made a move.
Xuanzang had been observing quietly. He smiled now, “Princess, if you truly love the Third Prince, why linger in a place where happiness eludes you? The Tang Dynasty, from where I hail, is simple in customs, rich in poetry and song. I believe the princess would enjoy it.”
Long Shuangyue Zhi naturally understood that Xuanzang was throwing salt on her wounds, itching with resentment, but she had to put on a joyful face, “If the Master approves, then it must be wonderful. I’ll go along with Third Brother’s wishes!”
Qu Zhisheng scratched his head, looking somewhat troubled. He said, “Father King, Shuangyue Zhi indeed likes the Tang Dynasty. It’s not as cold and harsh as the Western Regions here. They say the Jiangnan region there is mild and moist, which would be excellent for Shuangyue Zhi’s complexion.”
Qu Wentai, hearing this, was furious but before he could erupt, Xuanzang shook his head at him, forcing himself to suppress his anger. Qu Zhisheng continued, “But if I go to the Tang Dynasty, who will take care of you? Eldest Brother and Second Brother have already passed away. If I leave, Father King, what will you do?”
Qu Wentai was suddenly stunned, staring at Qu Zhisheng, his eyes reddening. He seemed on the verge of tears, but he managed to show a gentle smile, fiercely punching Qu Zhisheng and sighing, “Good lad, you’ve grown up! With you saying that, it hasn’t been in vain for me to raise you for over twenty years.”
Qu Zhisheng also showed genuine emotion, “Father King, I’ve been unfilial, causing you worry. It’s not that I don’t want to go to the Tang Dynasty. If Shuangyue Zhi and I leave, that old Dragon will be even more furious. Their Tri-Nation Coalition—how can you handle it alone? So after much thought, I’d rather hide in the palace than leave everything behind.”
“Exactly. Third Prince is indeed filial,” Xuanzang interjected. “Your Majesty, I admire Zhisheng’s sincerity and filial piety.”
Finally finding an excuse, Long Shuangyue Zhi hastily said, “At this critical moment, if he were to leave you, how could I still love him?”
“Don’t worry about these matters,” Qu Wentai said sadly. “After you leave, this war will be relentless. If you can leave a bloodline for the Qu family, then all my efforts as Father King will be worthwhile.”
Long Shuangyue Zhi was at a loss for words, glaring resentfully at Zhu Gui, but said no more, seemingly pondering countermeasures.
“Third son, it’s settled,” Qu Wentai decided decisively, waving his hand. “However, Father King has a request for you.”
Qu Zhisheng hurriedly bowed, “Father King, your request, your son dare not refuse. Please command.”
“Your King David’s jar, does it still have one wish left?” Qu Wentai asked.
“Yeah, it does!” Qu Zhisheng didn’t understand what he was up to, answering with surprise.
Qu Wentai stared at him, word by word he said, “Help me fulfill a wish, bring back your second brother!”
“What?” Qu Zhisheng was immediately stunned, staring dumbly at Qu Wentai, as if he hadn’t understood.
“I will allow you to marry Shuangyue Zhi and send you both to the Tang Dynasty,” Qu Wentai stared at him and said, “You help me make this wish, bring your second brother back to life!”
Qu Zhisheng panicked, “But… Father King, Second Brother is dead!”
Qu Wentai showed a pleading look, “King David’s jar can do anything, bringing back a dead person shouldn’t be impossible, right?”
“Well…” Qu Zhisheng was also uncertain, “I’m not sure about that. In theory, it should be possible!”
“Then make the wish, bring him back!” Qu Wentai urged eagerly, “This way, you and Shuangyue Zhi will have a happy life, and Father King will have a son to accompany him. Third son, I implore you!”
As Qu Wentai was about to kneel down, Qu Zhisheng was frightened and preemptively knelt down, holding his knees, “Father King! Father King! Let me think about it, let me think about it.”
No one interrupted him. Qu Zhisheng frowned and thought, “Father King, this jar is meant to protect Shuangyue Zhi. Never mind whether Second Brother can be resurrected, even if he can, what if something happens to Shuangyue Zhi in the future?”
Qu Wentai snorted, “The Tang Dynasty is rich and prosperous, its stability is undeniable, a sign of flourishing times. I’ll give you enough gold and silver. Once you and Shuangyue Zhi arrive in the Tang Dynasty, what major issues could you encounter?”
“That’s true, but…” Qu Zhisheng hesitated.
“Third son, your temperament doesn’t suit the turmoil of the Western Regions. Shuangyue Zhi staying here will only encounter unpredictable disasters. Once you’re in the Tang Dynasty, you’ll have no worldly troubles, just happiness and beauty, raising children—wouldn’t that be wonderful?” Qu Wentai earnestly persuaded.
“That sounds good.” Qu Zhisheng’s eyes lit up at the thought of future happiness, but he still hesitated, “But without King David’s jar, I… I won’t feel at ease.”
“How can you… not feel at ease?” Qu Wentai erupted in anger.
Xuanzang quickly intervened to stop him, smiling, “Third Prince, if you truly wish to go to the Tang Dynasty, this monk can write a letter to the Chief Secretary Wei Zheng. Wei Zheng is upright and holds a significant position in the court. He will surely take good care of you.”
“Oh, I see!” Qu Zhisheng couldn’t help but feel tempted, yet found it difficult to let go, now looking at Long Shuangyue Zhi.
Long Shuangyue Zhi hastily interjected, “Your Majesty, could you let Zhisheng think about it?”
“No!” Qu Wentai declared decisively, “The situation is urgent right now, we must proceed immediately.”
“Well…” Qu Zhisheng felt somewhat helpless.
Qu Wentai’s expression turned stern, “Third son, do you know that today Mohe Duo She from the Turks has arrived in Gaochang?”
Qu Zhisheng nodded, “I know. Father King seemed to have welcomed him into the palace for a banquet.”
“Exactly.” Qu Wentai’s face darkened, “I just sent him back to his residence to rest. Do you know why he came?”
Qu Zhisheng shook his head.
Qu Wentai spoke gravely, “He came under the pretext of coordinating our affairs with Yanqi, but he intends to seize King David’s jar!”
Qu Zhisheng was taken aback, and Qu Wentai continued anxiously, “Third son, he is the uncle of Khan Tong Yehu, wielding considerable troops in Western Turks. If he wants to seize it, even Khan Tong Yehu would be powerless. Therefore, for the present plan, you must immediately make the wish to revive Deyong! Even if he seizes it by force, all he can take is an empty jar!”
Qu Zhisheng and Long Shuangyue Zhi exchanged worried looks.
Xuanzang, deeply concerned, said, “Your Majesty, if that’s the case, you must beware of Mohe Duo’s anger.”
“I can’t worry about that now. Since he hasn’t explicitly stated it, I’ll pretend ignorance,” Qu Wentai said, “The most important thing now is to revive Deyong. As long as he’s alive, Gaochang can endure no matter how difficult the present situation is. If he cannot be revived, even if Gaochang manages to endure for now, it will eventually face the disaster of national extinction. Third son, I implore you!”
