- Chapter 6 - My Dear Brother, Farewell
Lu Chen was quite pleased with Mu Changtian’s arrangements. Although Li Feng was only a Seventh-tier martial artist, in this low-martial world, a Seventh-tier warrior was already capable of defeating a hundred men.
Moreover, the soldiers Li Feng had brought were mostly Second and Third-tier warriors. There were no ordinary soldiers among them.
In other words, they were all elite troops—no cannon fodder.
Lu Chen then said, “General Li, rise. I trust that your strength is more than sufficient to protect me and my family.”
“Thank you, Your Highness!” Li Feng replied, standing up.
Li Feng then whispered into Lu Chen’s ear, “Your Highness, the Mu Duke wanted me to remind you that the Eighth Prince has already sent people to the Northern Territory.”
Lu Chen frowned slightly and pondered for a moment.
‘The Eighth Prince?’
‘Lu Shuyun?’
‘Why would he send people to the Northern Territory?’
‘To kill me?’
Lu Chen quickly pieced it together. The mother of the Eighth Prince, Lu Shuyun, was also from a prominent family in Jiangnan. To secure the throne, Lu Shuyun desperately needed the Chu family’s support.
If Lu Chen were to die, the Chu family would most likely shift their support to another prince who shared the same Jiangnan roots.
It was impressive that Mu Changtian had been able to obtain such information, indicating that his influence over the military remained strong despite being removed from his position.
It was no wonder that Lu Chen’s father, the emperor, was so wary of Mu Changtian.
Lu Chen nodded and said, “Understood.”
He then mounted his horse and said, “Since everyone is ready, let’s set off. We need to reach the Northern Territory as soon as possible.”
All Lu Chen could think about now was arriving at the Northern Territory and beginning his cultivation journey.
Both the Qi Refining Technique and the Rejuvenating Hands required him to foster emotional connections with his wives and concubines to cultivate them. Fostering emotional connections, in this case, meant intimacy.
However, that wasn’t feasible during the journey; he needed a stable place for that.
As for potential threats along the way, Lu Chen wasn’t worried.
Everyone below the Grandmaster level was just an ordinary person.
And ordinary people couldn’t stop bullets. His Desert Eagle and Barrett sniper rifle weren’t just for show.
Soon, the Northern Prince’s entourage set out in an impressive procession, leaving the city behind.
Unlike on the day of Lu Chen’s wedding, not a single court official came to see him off—not even his father-in-law.
The streets were lined only with commoners, watching as if they were witnessing a spectacle.
Lu Chen didn’t care in the least whether anyone came to see him off. It didn’t matter to him.
As the convoy passed by a tavern, a man dressed in a cyan brocade robe stood on the second floor, watching the distant procession.
The man asked, “Is everything ready?”
“Rest assured, Your Highness,” a subordinate replied. “Everything has been arranged. The Blood Moon Tower has sent one Eighth-tier and two Ninth-tier assassins.”
“As soon as they leave the jurisdiction of the capital, the assassins will strike.”
Hearing this, Lu Shuyun, the Eighth Prince, gazed at Lu Chen, who was riding his horse and muttered to himself, “If Chu Yuqin hadn’t accompanied you to the Northern Territory, I wouldn’t have chosen this method. My dear brother, farewell.”
Initially, Lu Shuyun had thought that once Lu Chen left the capital, the Chu family would completely give up on him. After all, even the Emperor had exiled him to the desolate Northern Territory.
What Lu Shuyun hadn’t expected was that Chu Yuqin, a Ninth-tier expert, would accompany Lu Chen.
What did this mean?
It meant that the Chu family had no intention of abandoning Lu Chen!
Otherwise, there was no way they would have sent Chu Yuqin to accompany him.
Since the Chu family still hadn’t given up, Lu Shuyun felt it was necessary to help them make up their minds.
Soon enough, Lu Chen’s convoy left the city.
Once outside the city, Chu Yuqin noticed Lu Chen riding his horse and furrowed her brows slightly.
No one dared to attack within the city, but outside the city was a different matter.
Lu Chen, riding his horse so openly, was too much of an easy target. If someone shot an arrow at him, it would be hard to prevent.
Chu Yuqin immediately rode over to him. “Chen’er, you should return to the carriage.”
Lu Chen looked at her and said, “Aunt Chu, don’t worry. Even if someone intends to harm me, they won’t do it near the capital.”
Chu Yuqin replied, “It’s better to be safe than sorry. You should listen to me and go back to the carriage.”
Her tone was stern, as this was a matter concerning Lu Chen’s safety and couldn’t be taken lightly.
At that moment, Li Feng also approached. “Your Highness, we’re about to leave the jurisdiction of the capital. Please return to the carriage. The Mu Duke sent specially reinforced carriages that can withstand most arrows.”
Seeing that both Chu Yuqin and Li Feng were urging him, Lu Chen decided not to be stubborn.
At this point, he was only a First-tier martial artist, just a bit stronger than an ordinary person. If someone ambushed him, he wouldn’t be able to react in time.
“Alright,” Lu Chen said. “I’ll leave the security to you. If anything happens, notify me immediately.”
With that, Lu Chen climbed into the reinforced carriage that Mu Changtian had prepared for him.
At this moment, Lu Chen was separated from his princess consort, Mu Zixuan, and the other women. If someone did launch an ambush, even if something happened to Lu Chen, Mu Zixuan and the others might survive.
The convoy slowly made its way down the main road. After leaving the capital’s jurisdiction, they soon encountered a dense forest ahead.
Li Feng immediately reminded the soldiers, “Stay alert! Watch your surroundings!”
Chu Yuqin also addressed the prince’s personal guards. “From now on, don’t leave the carriage for a second.”
As the convoy entered the forest, the light dimmed considerably. Looking out the window, Lu Chen noticed the change in lighting and realized danger might be approaching.
He quickly retrieved his Desert Eagle from the system space and loaded it with bullets.
He had five hundred bullets for the Desert Eagle, which should be more than enough. Besides, he didn’t need to deal with the small fry—Li Feng and the others could handle them. He only needed to deal with the experts coming for him.
Just as the convoy ventured deeper into the forest, the distant sound of “whoosh, whoosh, whoosh” echoed through the trees, followed by a rain of arrows descending from the sky.
Li Feng shouted, “Ambush! Protect the prince!”
Chu Yuqin swiftly drew the sword from her waist.
Hearing the sounds outside, Lu Chen grew a bit nervous. He hadn’t expected an ambush to come so quickly.
The sound of arrows thudding against the carriage echoed from outside. Lu Chen knew this meant the arrows were hitting the reinforced carriage.
He had to admit, Mu Changtian had done well—the carriage was indeed formidable, blocking all the arrows.
As long as Lu Chen stayed inside, the arrows wouldn’t be able to hurt him.
After the first wave of arrows, a group of masked men dressed in black, wielding broadswords, charged toward the convoy.
Most of these attackers were Third-tier warriors, and their leader was an Eighth-tier expert.
Seeing this, Li Feng immediately led the guards into battle against the assassins.
Meanwhile, Lu Chen’s personal guards remained stationed by the carriage. Their primary task was to protect Lu Chen and his family, preventing any distractions or diversions.
Chu Yuqin didn’t rush to help Li Feng. Instead, she stood near Lu Chen’s carriage, staying vigilant.
Chu Yuqin knew that the real danger hadn’t arrived yet. She didn’t believe the enemy would only send an Eighth-tier expert.
To summon so many Third and Fourth-tier warriors, the force behind this assassination was no small power. There had to be at least a Ninth-tier expert coming.
As Chu Yuqin scanned the area, a light breeze rustled the leaves. The falling leaves split in half in midair before gently drifting to the ground.
A sharp gleam flashed in Chu Yuqin’s eyes.
“The real enemy is here!”
