Chapter 26: Rosetta, Today’s Just a Tour
After lunch, it was finally time for the long-awaited tour of important facilities.
Today, riding in the carriage with me are Lionetta, and the stern-looking old man as our escort. You again? You smell sweaty.
And there’s one more, an old gardener, apparently from the commoner district. He knows about the Adventurer’s Guild and the Commercial Guild, so he was brought along.
You’re busy with work, aren’t you? Are you sure you’re okay? Oh, you came along for the special pay? I see, you came for the profit. You sly old man! It would have been enough for just an oral explanation. You’re quite the opportunist!
We’re swaying in the carriage towards the commoner district.
First, we’ll be guided through the large facilities used by commoners.
The old gardener explains things in a slightly peculiar tone.
But why does he always add “dachona” at the end of his sentences? I don’t understand what that means.
“First, we’ll go to the Adventurer’s Guild, as the young lady wishes-dachona. Then, to the Commercial Guild, and if you want, we can visit the church and the market, right-dachona? After that, there’s the famous public toilet in the square-dachona. And then… how about the carriage waiting area? And if you like, we can also visit a tavern or enjoy the scenery somewhere-dachona.”
Yeah, I don’t understand what that means at all.
“Gahaha. The gardener sure talks funny. Anyway, we’re heading to the Adventurer’s Guild, the Commercial Guild, and the church. If you’re interested, we can also take a look around the town and market. And there’s the square. We have the only outdoor toilet in the country there. I wouldn’t recommend it for the young lady, it’s really dirty with feces and urine stuck everywhere. And then, for nobles, the highlight of the commoner’s sights is the carriage waiting area. You don’t need to go to scenic spots or restaurants, right?”
“No, that’s fine. I’d like to visit the main important facilities, so the two guilds, the church, the market, the square, and the waiting area are all good, right? And if there’s anywhere else interesting, we can decide at that time.”
“That’s right.”
Who is this escort old man? Were you supposed to be an interpreter? Are you actually bilingual? Impressive.
But the only words I understand are standard language and the gardener’s slow language. Isn’t that bad?
I knew that you could only shine in this situation. You’re a one-hit wonder. Well done, old man.
“We’re heading to that place next. The order is the Adventurer’s Guild, the market, the Commercial Guild, the waiting area, the church, and then the park-dachona.”
Is that order based on proximity?
I don’t like it, going west then east then southwest then northeast.
Passing the buck like that is something only old games did enough of.
We’re further swaying in the carriage towards the Adventurer’s Guild.
The commoner district mostly consists of single-story or row houses. It seems like they basically build single-story houses for each family.
It’s like the old longhouse residences in Japan. It seems like commoners couldn’t build houses vertically. Why is that?
Apparently, in the past, there were two or three stories, but there were many incidents of feces and urine being thrown out of windows, which caused hygiene and safety issues for pedestrians. Also, it seems like the nobles got hit by it once and decided to abolish it.
So, the originally multi-story residential areas like apartments in the commoner district became deserted as old city districts, and new single-story residential areas were created, and all commoners were forcibly moved there.
Well, there’s nothing you can do if the nobles get involved.
In fact, some commoners who opposed it were apparently executed.
And then, the deserted old city district became inhabited by homeless people who were left out from the residential areas.
So, now it’s a dangerous area where rogues live, and ordinary citizens and nobles must never go there, it’s a lawless area. It’s called the slums. But apparently, Father heads there for assassination requests. He told me during meals. Was it okay to tell a child that, Father?
Although the large facilities are wooden structures, they’re two or three stories high. The Adventurer’s Guild has a pretty nice appearance.
It seems like they were exempted from the facility regulations because they don’t throw feces outside.
But is it okay for so many people to gather there? Oh, all the toilets are on the ground floor. Well, that’s a relief.
In the first place, it seems like there’s only the pit toilet system because there’s no way to flush if it’s on the second floor. Well, it makes sense that the second floor is impossible, right?
There’s also a place for the carriage to stop. It’s the square.
If I were to liken it to modern-day Japan, it would feel like the parking lot of a large commercial facility, I guess?
The unique smell is quite overwhelming because the horses freely drop their dung. Ugh, it’s nauseating.
“Hahaha. It must be tough for a noble young lady like you. What do you say? Do you want to stop?”
“No, I’d like to observe and hear various explanations…”
I thought about just looking from the carriage, but I also want to see the inside and understand the system.
No, maybe I should come alone another day. I really don’t have the mental fortitude to keep enduring this smell without any preparation.
There seem to be people cleaning up the dung, but they can’t keep up with the herd of carriages that come several times a day.
It’s a manual task, gathering horse dung into sacks, and there’s no way they can keep up.
“No, explanations can be given verbally. I’ve remembered the locations, so let’s just focus on learning the locations of the facilities and explanations for today… Ugh.”
“P-please, get the carriage ready.”
Lionetta also looks pale.
It’s not just the smell that’s the problem.
The rocking of the carriage is too much, and combined with the smell, it’s overwhelming. I feel like I’m going to be sick.
For now, I’ll just cover my face with a handkerchief and tie it at the back. makeshift mask, done.
“Hahaha, what’s with that getup? Miss, are you planning to raid the Commercial Guild next?”
Who talks like that?
…Wait, doesn’t this outfit look like something a bank robber would wear? And my eyes seem quite villainous. Isn’t my current appearance alarming? Do I look like I could lead a revolution?
I won’t do it. I’m not some rebel or villainess. I’m just shaking with fear.
