Snail's Pace to a Wolf's Heart - Chapter 32
Rubbing his hands together, Dao Yi tilted his head thoughtfully before speaking after a moment, “Little Xinxin, considering future incidents where guests might become enraged due to his foul mouth, why not cut out his tongue during castration? It’ll make business smoother.”
The bloodied man could no longer utter a word, his eyes hazy and unfocused. Clearly, Dao Yi’s earlier strike had rendered him incapable of further insults; his head merely swayed with each breath.
“See, even he agrees.” Nodding in satisfaction, Dao Yi exchanged glances with Chu Fengxin. Moments later, two men in black dragged away the unconscious fat man. “Now, it’s your turn…”
Dao Yi’s gaze shifted to the terrified short man, “What was your name again? Xiao San, right?” As the man nodded, Dao Yi smiled genuinely, “Let’s have a chat…”
“But what should we talk about?” A slight frown appeared, as if genuinely pondering the topic, “Ah, I know – let’s discuss why you slapped my wife, hmm?”
Xiao San trembled; his legs weakened as he finally understood why this woman had been so hostile toward them earlier. He now realized that she must have witnessed everything happening inside the storage unit. “No… I’m sorry, I swear I won’t do it again, never again…” At this moment, even if Dao Yi asked him to become a slav❤ or beast of burden, he would willingly comply, just to avoid suffering the same torture Big Tongue endured.
“You really won’t?” A hint of suspicion lingered on Dao Yi’s face before they paused briefly and continued slowly, “Well, true enough—you’ll never get another chance.”
“If you… kill me, you still can’t escape legal consequences,” Xiao San yelled in fear and anger. He didn’t want to die, not yet.
“Tsk…” Dao Yi glanced disdainfully at the man. “Isn’t it laughable for someone like you to mention the law? How valuable could an infamous dr#g dealer possibly be? This is merely ridding society of a menace. Besides, do you think I’m foolish enough to let others know your death involves me? Don’t forget, my wife works in the Criminal Investigation Unit; getting involved in such trouble could strain our relationship.”
“Then don’t kill me—I promise you, I’ll listen to whatever you say from now on as long as you spare my life…”
The pleading voice annoyed Dao Yi; she waved her hand dismissively and sat back down in her chair, taking a sip of lukewarm tea.
“You’re not actually planning on letting him go, right?” Ding Wei turned the teacup in her hands nonchalantly toward the silent person beside her. She already knew the answer but enjoyed playing these games that kept others guessing.
“Hmm… good question, but if I let him off, wouldn’t my wife’s slap have been for nothing?” Dao Yi couldn’t just take this lying down. Xing Ning had always been the one who beat and scolded her, yet Dao Yi never retaliated—instead, enduring it silently or smiling through it all. Now someone dared to bully their doorstep, how could she possibly swallow this humiliation without action?
“It’s simple. Just treat him like we did with that fat guy earlier, an eye for an eye, right?” Chu Fengxin casually chimed in, showing no concern over whether anyone would accept her suggestion.
An eye for an eye? Dao Yi rubbed her chin lightly. If they followed Chu Fengxin’s words, wouldn’t it be too lenient for the man before them?
Dao Yi let out a sneer as she leaned back in her chair, carefully studying the short and timid man before her who feared death more than anything else. “How about this then, since you’re a dr#g dealer, we’ll decide your fate with some dr#gs—whether you live or die. Does that sound fair?”
dr#gs?! Xiao San looked at Dao Yi, puzzled, then frantically shook his head in terror. This woman was insane, completely deranged.
“What are you afraid of? I’m sure you didn’t have such an expression when selling these substances to others in the past.”
Pulling back on the syringe plunger, Dao Yi watched the liquid drip from the needle tip and chuckled, “Little Xinxin, it’s been ages since I’ve used this stuff; wonder if my skills might accidentally cause pain now.” Her eyes feigned concern, but only Ding Wei and Chu Fengxin could see the deeply hidden malice beneath.
Indeed, those who crossed her never met a good end. Ding Wei and Chu Fengxin exchanged knowing smiles, though today Dao Yi seemed unusually restrained, perhaps due to Xing Ning’s presence nearby.
“No, no…” The man screamed hoarsely, failing to evoke any sympathy from Dao Yi. Watching his incessant wriggling, she turned to seek assistance, “Can someone help keep him still? If I really hurt him like this, I’d feel guilty.”
Ha! Losing to this woman.
Despite her internal snark, Ding Wei stepped forward and pressed on the man’s shoulder, quickly inserting the needle into his vein within a blink of an eye. “Done.”
Retracting the syringe, Dao Yi and Ding Wei simultaneously took a step back as the struggling man suddenly convulsed violently, almost as if triggered by something. His eyes rolled upward, exposing only the whites, while white foam began oozing from the corners of his mouth.
“He didn’t just die from fear, did he?” Stunned by the scene unfolding before him, Dao Yi turned incredulously towards Chu Fengxin with wide-eyed disbelief. After all, she had merely injected some medical-grade glucose; could it really be that dramatic?
Rolling her eyes at the feigned innocence, Chu Fengxin approached and checked the man’s pulse. “Unfortunately, you’re right—he’s dead.”
Who was to blame for this?
The brutal actions taken against the fat man earlier had instilled unwavering belief in this now-deceased individual, deeply engraving in his mind that Dao Yi was someone who followed through on threats—a ruthless figure. Consequently, faced with such a seemingly harmless prank, the man’s psyche couldn’t withstand the shock. Dao Yi’s actions further reinforced his conviction that he was being injected with poison. As the liquid entered his body, his nervous system involuntarily triggered subconscious reactions akin to panic…
“Phew… Dao, remember not to play with fire next time. Look, all the fun is gone now.” Ding Wei seemed disappointed at how quickly their game had ended and began complaining.
With an awkward smile, she glanced between the two others only to receive eye rolls in return, changing her expression instantly into a serious one. “I’ll try to be more careful from now on, uh… and avoid killing people while playing.”
“Oh, almost forgot—before sending that fat man off as a prost❤tute, make sure to sever his tendons. If he escapes and dies outside, it’d be too easy for him,” Dao Yi tapped her cheek lightly, frowning, seemingly dissatisfied with always overlooking details.
“Don’t worry about that; I know what needs to be done. Rather, you should think about how to explain everything once your girlfriend wakes up later. That’ll give you quite a headache,” Ding Wei smirked at Dao Yi, envisioning someone else’s distress, which lifted her mood instantly.
“That’s none of your concern either.” With a slight lift of her eyebrows, Dao Yi brushed away imaginary dust from her clothes, subtly adjusting her facial expression. “I’m heading out first. Call if anything comes up.”
“Little Yi,” stopping Dao Yi just as she was about to leave, a hint of confusion surfaced on Chu Fengxin’s face, “Do you plan never to reveal the truth to them?”
“I will tell them, but not now. Once they’ve dealt with their issues and believe themselves strong enough to handle anything, then I’ll share the truth. However, that side of me earlier, I hope they never discover it. So, I must rely on both of you to help concoct this lie…”
“I have no objections, but soon, the Duke and Duchess, along with their family, will return to Rainbow City. Given the Duchess’s temperament and the Duke’s indulgence towards her, if they learn about your actions, I fear they won’t let you off easily.” Rubbing his nose bridge, Chu Fengxin felt an impending headache every time he thought of that elegantly noble yet deeply manipulative woman.
“What?” Involuntarily raising his voice, Dao Yi stared at Chu Fengxin, legs weakening, his expression turning bewildered, “She’s coming? Oh no, oh no, my good days are over…”
“Actually, Fengxin meant that the Duke’s family returned specifically to bring you back to France. Do you really think a single phone call could summon us here without Mrs. Storchen’s special permission?” Ding Wei added slowly, as if wanting to further shock Dao Yi, causing her friend’s mind to momentarily lapse into confusion.
Gradually awakening from darkness, Xing Ning rubbed her head and opened her eyes, flashes of the figure she saw before losing consciousness flickering in her mind. In panic, she sprang up, and upon hearing a sudden cry of pain behind her, swiftly pinned the person beneath her with one hand, instantly placing the small knife she always carried at their throat.
“Senior Ning, don’t get too excited…” The chilling sensation on her neck made Dao Yi immediately recognize what it was. Karma struck swiftly; mere moments after teasing someone, the tables had turned against her.
“Dao Yi?! What are you doing here?” Xing Ning released her grip, bewildered by the unexpected presence amidst her chaotic thoughts. She clearly remembered engaging in a fierce fight within the warehouse, followed by gunfire from the shadows, then a cloud of smoke. Her last memory froze on collapsing into someone’s arms.
“Where else would I be if not here? If you came any later, maybe you’d have had to find me in hell.” This woman was still as strong as ever; if those dr#g dealers hadn’t been armed, Dao Yi wouldn’t have worried about Xing Ning getting into trouble. After all, when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, few could match her prowess.
“What nonsense is this?” The anger in her words masked an inexplicable unease. She couldn’t let this bastard know how perilous the situation was; otherwise, who knows what torment she’d endure.
“I’m not talking nonsense! With so many guns pointed at you, if you were any slower, who else but the King of Hell would you meet?” Dao Yi whispered the truth, feeling a surge of frustration just thinking about it. Yet, she dared not openly vent her anger towards the person before her, only bottling it up inside. Why must this woman put herself in such dangerous company with those dr#g lords?
“You damn fool, you big idiot!” In fury, Dao Yi pinned down Xing Ning, pounding her with both fists. After being separated for so long, finally meeting again only to face defiance from this jerk stirred her emotions intensely.
Moreover, she almost feared never seeing her again. At this thought, tears began to uncontrollably well up.
