- Chapter 26 - If I Were Bald, Would You Still Love Me? (26)
As expected, going through tough times together can deepen people’s feelings. At least, Bu Zhongyao now mentioned Gu Yue’s name a lot more. This “plastic couple” who previously only had a superficial connection might actually be starting to form real feelings.
Since Gu Yue was fine now, Bai Yao didn’t bother with him anymore. After all, she also had a lot on her plate.
Bai Yao felt keenly aware that her days might be numbered, and she needed to carefully plan how to make her not-so-bright boyfriend become more independent in a short time.
She was working on a training plan when her phone, which was lying on the desk, vibrated with a new message.
【 Yao Yao, let’s have lunch together today. 】
Further up, many messages sent by him could still be seen.
【 Yao Yao, I memorized a classical poem today. 】
【 I’ve made it to the fours on my multiplication tables! 】
【 I resisted eating junk food today. 】
………
He’d sent many messages, all clearly fishing for some praise from her. Bai Yao only responded with a few 【 Good job 】 replies, but when he asked to see her, she replied, 【 Finish pages 38 and 39 in your math workbook before coming to see me. 】
Immediately, he sent several crying emojis in response.
Bai Yao didn’t relent. Shen Ji wasn’t exactly unintelligent; he was just incredibly lazy and always depended on her. She worried he wouldn’t even have basic survival skills if she weren’t around.
So, during her free time that day, Bai Yao volunteered to join Lu Xiaoran in researching the school’s history. Lu Xiaoran was surprised since Bai Yao usually spent all her free time with Shen Ji. This was the first time since Bai Yao started dating that she opted to spend time with her.
Lu Xiaoran couldn’t help but wonder if Bai Yao and Shen Ji’s relationship had cooled down.
After school, Lu Xiaoran climbed to the rooftop of the tallest building on campus with a pile of documents. From here, they could see the entire school grounds.
Watching Lu Xiaoran standing on the edge of the rooftop, taking photos with her camera, Bai Yao asked, “What are you photographing?”
Lu Xiaoran handed a document to Bai Yao. “This is a top-secret document that I managed to… pry open… I mean, painstakingly retrieved from the oldest archive room. The information recorded here is absolutely fascinating.”
Bai Yao opened the folder to find yellowed, weathered papers. Lu Xiaoran had taken photos of each page before printing and binding them. The documents included the original layout of the school when it was first built, along with the detailed distribution of each functional area.
A first glance revealed nothing unusual, but as Bai Yao continued reading, her brows furrowed.
On the second layout map, different areas were marked with red ink indicating various feng shui alignments. This wasn’t too surprising; even today, people often consult feng shui before beginning construction.
However, one place on the map had been circled in red ink and labeled with two characters: “Central Palace.”
Bai Yao, unfamiliar with feng shui, asked Lu Xiaoran, “Is there something significant about these placements?”
Lowering her camera, Lu Xiaoran pointed at the layout map and said, “I looked into this. Feng shui mandates strict guidelines on building placements and orientations, with specific requirements for what should be located where. The area at the very center is called the ‘Central Palace’ position, and traditionally, it’s a place that should be kept clean, unpressured, quiet, and undisturbed.”
Bai Yao asked, “But?”
Lu Xiaoran lowered her voice and said, “However, when our school was built, its orientation was exactly opposite to the standard theories in Feng Shui. This means that, aside from the Central Palace, the layout of all other areas is arranged contrary to conventional positions.”
Bai Yao’s frown deepened.
Lu Xiaoran said, “Yao Yao, you feel it too, right? Our school has been here for over eighty years. People were even more superstitious back then, so why would they intentionally defy these rules when building the school? I suspect there’s a big secret behind it.”
Lu Xiaoran’s imagination was running wild, “For example, someone might be trying to conduct some kind of evil ritual, or perhaps using this reversal method to draw on the fortune of people living in the school. Isn’t it true that strange things keep happening here? And yet, the teachers in the school often turn a blind eye, and almost all of our elders, going back to our great-grandparents’ generation, graduated from this school. Maybe there’s some unspeakable secret behind it all.”
Holding the documents, Bai Yao walked to the edge of the rooftop, looking at the layout in her hand, then glancing off into the distance.
Lu Xiaoran, having already done her research, pointed in a specific direction. “That should be where the Central Palace is marked on the map.”
In other words, the very center of the campus.
Lu Xiaoran said, “Typically, the Central Palace should be kept pure, but with everything in reverse now, what is the significance of this central area? Surely they wouldn’t place the filthiest things right there?”
Bai Yao’s gaze rested on a distant building. She pursed her lips, remaining silent.
The building Lu Xiaoran pointed to was the old multipurpose building that had been abandoned for years after a series of incidents shortly after the school was founded.
Today was Friday, which meant students were free to engage in evening activities, albeit only within the school grounds.
Bu Zhongyao arrived at the screening room, where Gu Yue said he had been waiting in advance. Although the school’s screening room was supposedly available to everyone, it was commonly understood that this was only true as long as those at the top of the social hierarchy didn’t need it.
Gu Yue and Bu Zhongyao had let everyone know they’d be using it tonight, so naturally, no one else dared to intrude.
Bu Zhongyao had put special effort into her appearance today, though her efforts seemed to go unnoticed by her inattentive boyfriend.
She flipped her hair flirtatiously and asked, “Doesn’t today’s lipstick look prettier than yesterday’s?”
Gu Yue responded, “Aren’t all your lipsticks the same color?”
Bu Zhongyao instantly lost interest in trying to pose. She lowered her hand, bored, and cast a sidelong glance at him. “You invited me to watch a movie, yet you’re not even ready?”
Gu Yue had previously mentioned that he wanted to watch a nostalgic movie with her, but he hadn’t even turned on the TV yet, and her time was precious.
She glanced at the DVD case beside the TV and went over to handle it herself, but the next second, her hand was gently grasped.
Gu Yue stammered, “It’s still early. N-no rush to watch just yet.”
Looking at his nervous expression, Bu Zhongyao immediately understood. She placed a hand on his chest and, smiling shyly, said, “You should’ve just said so. I wouldn’t have refused you—no need to use an old excuse like watching a movie to get me over here.”
