Jing Zhao, who had always taken the lead in such matters, saw Cheng You’s dominant side for the first time. She couldn’t help feeling a little strange.
She didn’t resist. She just moved her hands and said, “Don’t do that. It’s uncomfortable for me.”
After hearing this, Cheng You immediately let go of her hands. Instinctively, he grabbed her wrists and gently rubbed them with his fingers. He knelt on top of her—his feet on her sides—with an apologetic look on his face. He asked, “Did I hurt you?”
Just moments ago, he had a fierce look, like he wanted to eat her up. However, he now looked completely docile.
Jing Zhao found it amusing. She turned slightly and got into a seductive posture. “Didn’t you say you were going to do something even more excessive to me?”
Cheng You paused. A faint blush appeared behind his ears. Because of her words, the previously intense atmosphere dissipated. He wanted to continue, but…
“Are you not angry anymore?”
Jing Zhao didn’t answer. Her watery eyes simply curved, slightly, as she gave him a glowing smile.
Noticing her change in attitude, Cheng You’s anxious mood gradually faded, replaced by an unknown desire. The way he rubbed her wrists also subtly changed. He leaned forward, leaving less than half a finger’s distance between him and her tempting red lips.
“May I, Jiejie?” he asked in a husky voice.
Jing Zhao’s eyes momentarily blurred. Time seemed to rewind to the first time they had slept together.
She had been drunk. She recklessly pulled him along with her rhythm, leaving the inexperienced man completely at a loss. She remembered the way his whole body had reddened; he looked like a boiled shrimp.
Later, as they were entangled, even though he was on the brink of breaking, he still restrained himself and asked her, ‘May I, Jiejie?’
How did she respond again?
Oh, she said, “Didi, if you can’t do it, please find someone else who can.”
In the end, it was satisfying, but she also ended up being thoroughly exhausted because of him.
This time was similar. They entangled together until the broad daylight turned dark. The room was filled with a lascivious scent.
Jing Zhao went to sleep soundly, but Cheng You couldn’t.
He didn’t know why, but he felt he could go days and nights without sleeping right now.
He didn’t feel tired, so he propped himself up and watched the person nestled in his arms. Without him even realising it, a smile formed on his lips.
It was a strange feeling. Although he didn’t have many memories of her, she felt completely familiar, especially since they were so compatible.
Since losing his memory, this was probably the most content Cheng You had felt.
The fact that Jing Zhao was five years older than him was something Cheng Ming had told Cheng You. Cheng Ming hadn’t planned to tell him about his relationship with Jing Zhao, but since Cheng You had asked, Cheng Ming didn’t want to lie to his brother. Mainly, he feared that if Cheng You regained his memory later, it might create a rift between them, so he told him about his relationship with Jing Zhao.
When Cheng You learned that he had pursued her relentlessly to win her over, he was completely shocked. Cheng Ming found it embarrassing and difficult to speak about, but he still recounted what he knew about Cheng You and Jing Zhao’s story from start to finish, though with a dark expression on his face.
This certain second young master of the Cheng family had done outrageous things to pursue a woman, things that couldn’t be finished in three days and nights. Cheng Ming never intended to elaborate; he just gave a general overview and stopped. He had never been in a relationship himself, he had to help his brother recall his. The more he spoke, the angrier he got.
Cheng You was stunned. From Cheng Ming’s words, he only drew one conclusion: He must have loved her very deeply.
Even if he didn’t remember, he felt that had fallen in love with her all over again. That was why he couldn’t resist her; that was why he was willing to sink into her provocations and everything else that she presented him with.
The next day, Jing Zhao noticed that something was different with Cheng You. If it weren’t for him still truly being unable to answer questions about the past, she would have thought that he had regained his memory.
He treated her the same as before, if not more attentively, out of concern that his post-amnesia self might not measure up to his pre-amnesia self.
Jing Zhao didn’t find it hard to adjust. When he wanted to go so far as to help her put on her socks, though, she couldn’t help teasing him by saying, “You’re making me miss your unruly side from before.”
Cheng You, who was half-kneeling while helping her with her socks, paused and looked up at her with a hint of grievance in his eyes. “Baby, are you tired of me?”
“Who are you calling baby?”
“Baby…”
His expression suddenly drooped, and his long bangs covered his eyes. Cheng You stood up and put one of his hands in his pocket. His tall figure blocked the sunlight behind him.
He slowly reached out his slender fingers to lift Jing Zhao’s chin. His long eyes were half-narrowed as he asked, “When was I ever unruly in front of you?”
As always, he said the most cowardly words in the most domineering way. Jing Zhao suddenly burst out laughing, clutching her stomach as she bent over with laughter.
Cheng You sighed. He watched her laugh, then silently crouched down to continue putting on her socks.
After the apocalypse started, the weather became unpredictable. Although it wasn’t yet the coldest part of winter, everyone was already wearing hats, scarves, and down jackets.
Half a month ago, Jing Zhao had told Cheng Ming about the crystal cores in the brains of evolved zombies. Cheng Ming immediately ordered the research institute to study the crystal cores’ effects.
Dr. Lu Ning, now the director of the Southwest Base Research Institute, was primarily responsible for the zombie virus research. Jing Zhao also later joined the institute as Dr. Lu’s assistant.
Jing Zhao actually knew how the crystal cores could be of use to ability users. However, she still needed to do many tests and experiments to prove that the zombie crystal cores were harmless and even beneficial to humans before they could be put to use.
Eventually, she and the research institute proved that the crystal cores of evolved zombies could help ability users enhance their powers, and the enhancement was much faster than through meditation or using other methods.
Once this conclusion was confirmed, Cheng Ming announced the news to other survivor bases.
Zombies were rampant, and there weren’t many remaining survivor bases. Instead of competing for resources, the bases chose to exchange them. They knew that if they didn’t unite, humanity might lose its future.
It must be said that the leaders of each base had this awareness thanks to Cheng Ming’s earlier decision to provide other bases with the virus blocker and its formula for free. With the virus blocker at hand, even ordinary people bitten by zombies wouldn’t necessarily get infected. This increased human determination and confidence to fight the virus.
This direction was far better than the direction of the original plot.
In the original plot, Dr. Lu wasn’t rescued in time, and he and Jing Zhao were captured and forced into helping Jason conduct terrible virus experiments. Dr. Lu couldn’t bear to continue harming people with cruel experiments and committed s*icide in the lab.
As a supporting villainess, Jing Zhao eventually chose to collude with Jason. She did things against human decency for wealth and power, which led to her own tragic end.
Without the virus blockers, survivor bases often fought over resources. Self-preservation was difficult, let alone cooperation.
Human morality gradually deteriorated, and respectable people lost their voices. With the mutation of birds and the continuous evolution of zombies, the apocalyptic world became a world where strength and ability ruled all.
Cheng You understood his brother. His brother was never a tyrannical ruler but someone who hoped to bring light to the world.
After Jing Zhao started working at the research institute, Cheng You didn’t stay idle. He was the only ability user with three abilities at the base. His current strongest ability was his psychic ability, which had advanced rapidly after he absorbed the energy from the T3 zombie’s crystal core, which Jing Zhao had extracted on that one mission. Now, he could deal with even newly-appeared T4-level zombies with ease.
As such, Cheng Ming often entrusted him with important tasks. Although Cheng Ming didn’t have any ability and spent most of his time at the base, his decisions had an immeasurable impact on humanity’s defence against zombie invasions.
The two brothers, one commanding the base and the other fighting outside, were seen as the guardians of the Southwest Base by the survivors.
Within a little over a month, Jing Zhao noticed that Cheng You had tanned significantly. He hadn’t become ugly; instead, he had gained a wild charm. Additionally, possibly due to his ability modifying his body, he had grown much taller. He no longer resembled a puppy now.
His speech and actions were no longer impulsive, and he often thought things through, sometimes even more thoroughly than his brother.
Moreover, in their interactions, Jing Zhao found herself increasingly losing the upper hand, especially after Cheng You regained his memories.
Cheng You regained his memories after absorbing the crystal core from the T3 zombie.
Jing Zhao had conducted brain tests on him before and after absorbing the core. Apart from his brain showing unusually active neural patterns, there were no other abnormalities.
After discussing with Dr. Lu, they could only attribute Cheng You’s sudden amnesia to his psychic ability.
They speculated that the amnesia had been caused by his ability evolving, but him not having enough energy to accommodate it. As such, some of his mutated nerves had to shut down to maintain normal brain function, and this led to his memory loss. After absorbing the crystal core’s energy, his ability successfully evolved, thus restoring his memory.
However, Jing Zhao always felt that he was different after regaining his memory.
For instance, he almost never slept. She often woke up to find him staring at her with a gloomy expression. Upon seeing her awake, he would wordlessly come over to kiss her.
He had been very gentle in the past, but he now resembled a fierce wolf. When he kissed her, he seemed to want to take all the air from her lungs. Only when she couldn’t take it anymore and pushed him away would he slowly peck her lips, his own breath ragged and his eyes red.
Jing Zhao wondered if his rapid ability evolution had put too much pressure on his brain and caused him to go a little nuts.
Whenever she asked, though, he always told her that he was fine.
It was only once, when they were out collecting supplies, that she finally realised something was indeed wrong with him.
During a mission, they encountered a group from the Southern Base. This group was led by a relative of the Southern Base’s leader. The group’s leader was a man named Qin Mo, a dual-ability user with formidable strength.
During this mission, collecting supplies was a secondary objective for Jing Zhao and Cheng You. Their main objective was to find evolved zombies with crystal cores.
Since Jing Zhao’s plant-based ability had levelled up, she had become very sensitive to other people’s emotional changes.
Qin Mo had never crossed paths with them before, and they were complete strangers. Even if they happened to meet, Cheng You shouldn’t have much reaction to meet him. However, Jing Zhao noticed a large reaction from Cheng You.
Their main target in this mission was a T4-level, evolved ability user zombie. This zombie had been spotted before, and it was rare because it possessed plant-based abilities. Upon learning of this zombie’s existence, Cheng You became determined to obtain the zombie.
When they were chasing the zombie into a mountain forest, they happened to encounter Qin Mo and his group. Cheng You, who had already locked onto the T4’s position, suddenly relaxed. He found a house and settled down in it with Jing Zhao. He even leisurely took the time to prepare a delicious dinner for her.
Given Cheng You’s increasingly abnormal behaviour, Jing Zhao ate with unease. Sure enough, when she woke up in the middle of the night, she found that Cheng You—who had been holding her when she went to sleep, was gone.
Since Cheng You’s psychic ability evolved, its extent had grown into an unfathomable extent. Even if Cheng You wasn’t there, Jing Zhao knew she must still be within his psychic ability’s visible range.
So, she didn’t panic. She just dressed herself and went to the balcony to wait for him.
Cheng You returned after a while.
Despite the extremely cold weather, he was only wearing a thin grey turtleneck sweater and a black coat. Meanwhile, Jing Zhao was wrapped up like a ball. It was as if he were in a different weather from her.
As Jing Zhao had expected, Cheng You didn’t seem surprised to see that Jing Zhao was awake. Although he wasn’t physically around, Jing Zhao had always been within his psychic ability’s reach. He must have known that she had woken up and returned to cook for her.
After going upstairs, he hugged her and lifted her into his arms. Jing Zhao leaned against his chest and asked where he had been. Cheng You lightly took out a light green crystal core the size of a walnut, raised his eyebrows lightly, and said with a hint of joy in his voice, “The zombie was plant-based, so Zhaozhao, you can use its core.”
Jing Zhao’s eyes slightly curved as she smiled. This was the first zombie they encountered that had awakened a plant-based ability, so its core was naturally very precious. She held the crystal core and lowered her eyes. However, the joy in her eyes soon disappeared.
She could clearly smell a strong stench of blood coming from him. If he had killed only zombies, he wouldn’t smell like this.
That night, Jing Zhao dreamed of the original plot. In it, she had survived after Jason’s death. Later, she used her beauty and other means to seduce a big shot from the Southern Base. The two colluded for a long time and even caused a lot of trouble for Cheng You. This ‘big shot’ was Qin Mo.
Qin Mo appeared to be a gentleman on the surface, but in reality, he was lustful and wicked. He privately abused the power given to him by the Southern Base’s leader, turning the base into his secret den of debauchery. He harmed and killed countless ordinary survivors in the Southern Base.
Jing Zhao rarely dreamed of the plot, especially when it came to the tragic ending of ‘herself.’ When she woke up, her forehead was covered in a thin layer of sweat.
While she was still in a daze, a strong and slender arm wrapped around her waist, then slightly tightened. Cheng You’s solid chest and abdomen pressed against her. With a sigh, he said, “It seems Zhaozhao had a bad dream, just like me.”
