The Female Supporting Character Refuses to Be Human Again - Chapter 71.2
Upon returning to Lihua Village, Meng Changjin headed straight home.
As she opened the gate, she found everything in the courtyard in perfect order. It was clear that someone had entered the courtyard, triggering the talismans she had placed there.
But since the courtyard was empty, whoever it was had likely been so terrified by the illusions created by the talismans that they had fled, stumbling and tumbling out. After a quick survey, Meng Changjin confirmed that nothing was missing from her yard.
She didn’t bother seeking out the intruder. Whoever it was had probably been scared witless and, unless they were a complete fool, wouldn’t dare return.
Whether they spread rumors about her yard being haunted was a fifty-fifty chance, but Meng Changjin wasnāt too worried. After all, the Yu family had already whispered about such things before. If the story spread again, people would likely dismiss it as old news.
Clearing her thoughts, Meng Changjin got to workāfetching water, washing the pork, chopping it into chunks, and setting it to simmer into lard.
Once the lard was ready, she stored it in jars. Looking at the leftover crispy pork bits, Meng Changjin thought of mincing them with cabbage to make dumplings.
The idea of cabbage and crispy pork dumplings made her mouth water, but she quickly remembered one major problem: she didnāt know how to knead the dough or roll the wrappers. She had made dumplings before, but they had turned out hideous and fell apart during cooking. In short, she was clueless about making proper dumplings.
Realizing her limitations, Meng Changjin decided to keep things simple and just stir-fry the pork bits with cabbage. The taste wouldnāt be too bad, after all.
While she went to the backyard to pick some cabbage for her meal, in the thatched cottage at the village entrance, Second Master Yu sat looking as if his soul had left his body.
Earlier, Meng Changjin had sensed that someone had triggered the illusion talismans in her yard. That person turned out to be none other than Second Master Yu.
Ever since Meng Changjin had broken his leg, Second Master Yu had hated his “cursed” daughter and wanted to teach her a lesson.
Moreover, he couldnāt understand why they were living in a shabby thatched cottage while they had a perfectly good brick house. To him, it made no sense.
The other members of the Yu family kept insisting that the old house was haunted, terrifying even, but Second Master Yu, who had been bedridden during the supposed incidents, had never seen any ghosts or demons.
Since he hadnāt witnessed anything himself, he found it hard to believe, no matter how vividly the others described it.
So, he didnāt believe the tales at all. Recently, with the old man and the old lady constantly arguing, Second Master Yu had decided to check out the house at the village’s edge.
He wanted to prove that there were no ghosts or demons and that the Yu family was simply scaring themselves.
And maybe, heād finally give that unfilial daughter of his, Yu Hanzhu, a proper scolding!
So, he went to the house and found the gate locked. With no other choice, he decided to climb over the wall, despite his injured leg.
Luckily for him, the wall wasnāt high, so he managed to get over it. But as soon as he landed and looked up, he saw a bunch of bizarre, grotesque figures staring back at him, some with eyes and some without.
Second Master Yu was so scared he nearly lost his soul, screaming like a banshee as he scrambled back over the wall, falling several times in the process. His previously healing leg was hurt all over again.
