Chapter 26: The Echoing Song from the Other Side Part 8
“Ugh… Huh?”
Feeling an oddly intense drowsiness, I rubbed my eyes.
Did I not sleep well on the train last night? I definitely wanted to hurry home and sleep in my own bed.
“Hey, Mom. Let’s finish up and go home…”
But then I opened my eyes and realized.
My mother, who should have been embracing me, was nowhere to be seen. Not only that, but the scenery had completely changed. Despite being in the shack where the children had been imprisoned just moments ago, I now found myself sitting in the plaza in front of Luzgarta’s city station.
However, there was no one around.
Normally, this plaza would be crowded with residents seeking refuge. Yet, no matter how much I looked around, not a single soul could be found.
A profoundly unsettling feeling washed over me. It felt as though something abnormal was happening to me.
(Is this… could it possibly be…)
Just before I was overcome by sudden drowsiness, I remembered hearing a strangely beautiful song.
Could it be that it wasn’t the ‘Song of Temptation’? Did the demon retaliate because my mother provoked it by emitting a sound that would discomfort demons? Or perhaps, to hold me, the daughter of the saint, hostage.
A cold sweat broke out all over my body.
If that were the case, then this place might not actually be the plaza in front of Luzgarta at all. It only looked that way, but in reality, it could be inside the ‘Song of Temptation’.
“M… Mom!!! Help—! Please, do something—!!!”
I couldn’t help but shout into the empty sky.
Upon closer inspection, the sky was an eerie reddish-purple color, clearly not normal. The possibility that this was inside the belly of the demon became even more plausible, causing me to pale even further.
“Um… the dog! Yes! Even the dog would do! Wolfie, help!!!”
Silence.
My words, sent towards the sky, were simply swallowed into nothingness. Not even an echo returned.
It was the most hopeless situation imaginable, but instead of succumbing to despair, anger surged within me.
“Argh! This is the worst!”
I gritted my teeth tightly and kicked the ground with all my might in frustration.
Why did my mother do something so reckless all of a sudden? At the very least, before provoking the demon, shouldn’t she have protected her beloved daughter with a barrier and placed me in a safe zone?
It was a mistake that a saint like her shouldn’t have made. By now, my mother would probably be panicking and fretting over me in a state of apparent death—I mean, wait.
I pinched my forehead, recalling what happened just before I lost consciousness.
My mother had definitely said this:
“You’ll be fine.”
With my eyes closed, I looked up at the sky.
I’ll be fine, surely. Remembering the warm words of trust my mother had spoken—
“Don’t be ridiculous! This stupid mom—!!!”
Picking up a nearby pebble, I hurled it at the station window.
With the satisfying sound of glass shattering, shards scattered everywhere. Since this was inside the demon’s belly anyway, I was confident that no one would scold me, so I proceeded to break the station windows one after another.
And my momentum didn’t stop there.
I grabbed a shovel from near the flowerbed in the plaza and began destroying anything within reach. I even considered setting the town on fire while I was at it—until I suddenly realized.
(Huh. This place is inside the demon’s belly, so wouldn’t throwing a tantrum cause stomach pain or something?)
However, there was absolutely no change in the surroundings.
The eerie reddish-purple sky remained unchanged. Well, that was to be expected. If someone like me could cause a commotion and escape, then the trapped children would surely find a way to free themselves.
I tossed aside the shovel and began earnestly contemplating how to survive.
After venting my frustration for a while, my head started to clear slightly.
My mother had said, “You’ll be fine.” She knew my incompetence, so this wasn’t just baseless optimism.
In other words, even if I lacked strength, there was a way to survive this situation. At least my mother was confident of that.
(And then… right. Mom suddenly mentioned the cake.)
How to induce vomiting. I needed to make something incredibly disgusting. For demons, the “holy power of exorcism” would be as potent as my mother’s cake.
“… Could it be?”
Suddenly struck by an idea, I surveyed the plaza.
What I had hoped for was there: a bell tower used for signaling and timekeeping. I climbed the ladder of the tower with trepidation and began relentlessly ringing the bell with the provided mallet.
“I’m here–!! If you’re here too, come quickly–!!”
Being a child with no resistance against the powers of demons, I had my soul extracted by the song.
Oddly enough, there was another victim present in that place, fulfilling the same condition of being a defenseless kid.
“Yuno-kun—!! If you hear this bell, hurry up and come over—!!”
In response to my call, a boy came running breathlessly from across the main street of the town.
