- Chapter 14 - Women Who Don’t Come To Pick up Their Men Are All Garbage

Xie Zichen climbed over the wall to get in.
When he climbed over the wall, Wei Lan was sitting in the room waiting for him inside. Her room was spotless, requiring one to walk in barefoot. Xie Zichen took off his clogs and walked on the cold floor with bare feet, approaching the person who was sitting cross-legged and reading a book.
Tonight, Wei Lan seemed a bit strange. She didn’t take the initiative to greet him as usual when she saw him coming, instead, she continued to read the documents seriously, acting as if he didn’t exist.
Xie Zichen stopped in front of her, blocking the light. Wei Lan frowned, then looked up and relaxed her expression and smiled, “So it’s Fourth Young Master Xie.”
Her smile was perfect yet distant, completely different from her usual flamboyant demeanour. Xie Zichen frowned, wondering what Wei Lan was planning to do?
The calmer she was, the more uneasy he felt.
Wei Lan pointed to the cushion in front of her and gestured for him to sit. “Sir, please take a seat.”
Xie Zichen silently knelt in front of Wei Lan, his mind constantly on guard. He knew this man in front of him never played by the rules.
“This time, I invited you here because Xie Jie has prepared a plan to harm Fourth Master Xie during the upcoming spring hunt. I wanted to discuss this matter with you.”
Saying this, she poured tea for Xie Zichen. The sound of tea pouring and her voice together made people feel inexplicably at ease. The person in front seemed omnipotent, in control of everything, making people involuntarily trust her.
“The day after tomorrow during the spring hunt, Xie Jie plans to place a poisoned needle in the hoof of Fourth Master Xie’s horse. Once Fourth Master Xie rides into the woods, your horse will panic, throwing you off, and his plan will be accomplished.”
“Mm.” Xie Zichen was not surprised; it was the same uncreative tactic as in his previous life.
Wei Lan put down the teapot, pushed a teacup to Xie Zichen, and continued, “If this plan fails, Xie Jie has another one. He will falsely tell you that Young Lady Wang Wanqing has been assaulted, luring you out of the woods, and then have bandits kidnap you.”
“Bandits? Your people?” Xie Zichen looked up at Wei Lan. She smiled and continued, “That’s what I wanted to discuss with you. The bandits aren’t my people. I gave Xie Jie a suggestion to anonymously write to the bandits of Black Wind Fortress, informing them of your value and whereabouts, so they would abduct you. We would intercept their ransom letter on the way to the Xie residence. When the bandits don’t receive the ransom after a long time, they would either release you or kill you out of impatience. If they release you, we would kill you ourselves, framing it as the bandits’ doing. If they kill you, even better.”
Xie Zichen remained silent, rubbing the teacup, quietly waiting for her next words. He had to admit, Wei Lan’s plan was much better than Xie Jie’s. If he had really died this way, it would be almost impossible to trace back to Xie Jie. However, Wei Lan dared to tell him, which meant she was prepared for him to know and needed him to know.
“Xie Jie has already sent someone to deliver the message. I took a jade pendant from his room and had it sent to the messenger, who would probably deliver the letter and the pendant to Black Wind Fortress. The day after tomorrow, we’ll follow the plan, and when you are led to the abandoned temple and the bandits come, they will capture both you and Xie Jie. We’ll release the ransom letter. While in the fortress, you will kill him, and I’ll handle the aftermath.”
“You’ll handle it?” Xie Zichen frowned. Wei Lan smiled, “I have hundreds of soldiers. You just need to stall on the mountain, kill him, and when I arrive, I’ll rescue you. Once you’re out, pretend to be severely injured and tell the Xie family it was all the Black Wind Fortress’ doing. This way, we can kill two birds with one stone. Not only will it help you settle Xie Jie, but it will also highlight your deep feelings for Xie Jie.”
“Moreover, the most important thing is that after his son’s incident, Xie Jie’s father will likely investigate first. Poison needles are easily detectable, but once we capture Black Wind Fortress and obtain Xie Jie’s letters and the jade pendant from those people, his father will stop the investigation because it will reveal a case of fratricide.”
“And out of guilt,” Wei Lan smiled, “Maybe he’ll even recognize you as his son.”
“Mm.” Xie Zichen didn’t seem to have any issues with the plan and nodded earnestly. Wei Lan looked at him. The beauty in front of her had bright eyes, sharp brows, and long, dense eyelashes fluttering like little fans, making Wei Lan troubled.
She couldn’t help but feel depressed. How could such a good man have a fiancée?
Thinking this, she sighed. She was really too infatuated. Initially, she was angry at Xie Zichen for deceiving her, but now that he was here, sitting obediently, she couldn’t help but soften her heart.
How could a mistake made by such a handsome man be called a mistake? It was the rules that were wrong!
It was her fault. She pursued him without investigating; all the blame was on her.
“Master Xie Si,” her inner turmoil made her unable to resist asking, even though she knew it was not gentlemanly, “Do you… have a fiancée?”
Hearing Wei Lan’s words, Xie Si was momentarily stunned, then quickly reviewed the unusual things tonight, understanding Wei Lan’s peculiar behaviour. Hearing about his fiancée and getting angry, he thought…this is jealousy, right?
Imagining a man getting jealous over a woman, Xie Si felt his hairs stand on end, a chill in his heart. He nodded, “Yes.”
“Then… are you two in love, are you sure you want to get married?” Wei Lan still wanted to try. But Xie Zichen cruelly nodded and said, “I was going to formally propose after Miss Wang’s coming-of-age ceremony next year.”
Anyway… she wouldn’t wait until then; she would take the initiative to break off the engagement with him.
He recalled his last life when Wang Wanqing had cried as she sent back the hairpin he had carved by hand, sobbing, “Fourth Brother, I have no choice. My family wants me to marry the Third Prince, even as a concubine. It’s the royal family…” He couldn’t help but feel a bit cynical, realizing his fiancée was quite something from a different perspective.
Reflecting on the bitter past, Xie Zichen remained calm, sipping tea, but didn’t forget to quietly glance at the person in front of him. The person in front of him sighed with a sad expression and said, “It seems I can only be friends with Master Xie Si.”
Hearing this, Xie Zichen breathed a sigh of relief. But then Wei Lan added, “Master Xie Si should have mentioned this earlier…”
Mention what? How could I know you have such morals?
Xie Zichen silently mocked in his heart, but maintained a cool facade on the outside as he knelt, comforting, “Whether I have a fiancée or not, what does it have to do with our alliance?”
Yes, it has a lot to do with it. Wei Lan lamented—if not for my interest in you, who would go through all this trouble?
When she thought that the man she had been pursuing so hard was about to enter the arms of someone else, Wei Lan felt frustrated.
She grew irritable and waved her hand, “You may leave.”
Xie Zichen nodded, sensing something was left undone but couldn’t pinpoint what. After thinking for a while, he stood up to leave. As he reached the door and found that the person behind him hadn’t moved, he finally realised what was off,
“Aren’t you going to see me off?”
He couldn’t hold it back and turned around and asked Wei Lan who was sitting lost in thought. Hearing Xie Zichen’s words, Wei Lan was stunned for a bit and then smiled.
“Master Xie Si,” she smiled, “I never see off other people’s men.”
Xie Zichen: “…”
“And women who don’t come to pick up their men,” she added, “are all trash.”
The trash Wang Wanqing sitting in the courtyard couldn’t help but sneeze.
