N City, located in the south, only welcomed its first snowfall of the year at the end of December. The white snow hadn’t fully covered the ground yet and was gradually melting away. While it was cold outside, the interior of the room was warm and cozy like spring. Chi Jianyue was wearing a fluffy home outfit and pouting at Ting Wan, playfully seeking her attention.
“Ting Wan, why don’t you accompany me home for the Lunar New Year? It’s so boring to be alone.”
Ting Wan leaned against the sofa, legs crossed, holding a book in her hands. “I do this every year and I don’t find it boring.”
Alright, Chi Jianyue admitted, it was she who was feeling bored. There was still some time before the holidays, but she had already started imagining how to spend the long winter break. The Chi family had a tradition of going back to their hometown for the Lunar New Year, which meant that Chi Jianyue would mostly stay at her grandparents’ house in the neighboring city of M. This also meant that she would be separated from Ting Wan for a whole month, and just the thought of it made Chi Jianyue feel a pang of reluctance.
“My grandparents are really nice people. Are you sure you don’t want to come with me?” she pleaded.
Ting Wan looked up from the pages of her book, a hint of helplessness in her expression. “So, Jianyue, what kind of identity should I go back with you as?”
This question caught Chi Jianyue off guard, and after a moment of silence, she softly replied, “Um… girlfriend…?”
Ting Wan chuckled and used the spine of the book to lightly tap her head. “Jianyue, just go back by yourself. It’s only a month.”
Chi Jianyue pouted, turned her head with an air of frustration, her eyes dimming slightly.
Yes, Ting Wan hadn’t officially confirmed their relationship yet.
Time flew by quickly. Chi Jianyue had met Ting Wan in late spring, and in the blink of an eye, it was almost a year later. ‘kilig’ would remain open until a few days before New Year’s Eve. Since Chi Jianyue started her vacation, Ting Wan had no choice but to devote all her energy to the store. Lán Líng didn’t know the reason behind this sudden change, and she found it strange. It seemed like Ting Wan Mama had just recently become free, but now she had turned into a workaholic again. In fact, Ting Wan’s busyness depended on how often Chi Jianyue clung to her.
Ting Wan finished work late, and Chi Jianyue would still wait for her to finish her shift and have a video call before going to sleep. She had a thousand words she wanted to say, but whenever she saw that slightly tired face on the screen, all she could stutter out was, “I miss you so much…”
The endless yearning was condensed into these few words. Chi Jianyue had so much she wanted to say to Ting Wan, but being separated by a screen made her worry if her feelings were being conveyed strongly enough. She would toss and turn in bed at night, contemplating the meaning behind Ting Wan’s question.
Initially, she only felt sadness, but afterwards, she sensed a hint of reproach in it. It was the typical push and pull that Ting Wan was known for. Chi Jianyue wished she could fly to N City and ask her directly.
She had always been a straightforward person, but she became hesitant and unsure in the presence of Ting Wan.
“Hmm? Jianyue, aren’t you tired today?” Ting Wan asked.
Chi Jianyue had to wake up early in her hometown, and usually, she couldn’t last more than ten minutes in a video call. But today, the time had passed quickly, and she still hadn’t ended the call.
Ting Wan finished applying body lotion, leaning against the headboard with warm eyes and a reassuring smile. She intentionally lowered her voice while talking to Chi Jianyue, trying to help her fall asleep sooner.
Chi Jianyue nestled in her blanket, surrounded by darkness, with only the faint glow from the screen illuminating her face for Ting Wan to see.
“I… I’m not sleepy,” she said.
Was it just an illusion? It seemed like there was a layer of mist in the girl’s eyes. Ting Wan’s gaze intensified. “Are you crying?”
During their time apart, the most common words Chi Jianyue said were expressions of longing. She thought that her clingy Ojou-sama couldn’t bear the loneliness and felt aggrieved.
As soon as those words came out, Chi Jianyue’s eyebrows furrowed even deeper, and the screen shook for a moment before plunging into darkness. The phone was flipped over and placed on the bed, and she could only hear Chi Jianyue’s slightly urgent voice saying, “Um, no, just keep talking to me like this…”
